Development of safety critical software is subjected to numerous restrictions and recommendations. To meet these requirements classical software development models (e.g. V-model) are usually applied. Agile methodologies, although rapidly increasing their popularity, were generally regarded as unsuitable for such projects. However, they offer potential benefits which provide a strong incentive to incorporate them into safety-critical software development lifecycle. The paper examines the motivations towards a wider application of agile practices in development of critical software. It also presents the results of some preliminary studies aiming at assessing the relevance of agile practices to the safety-related projects and reviews problems and challenges related to the hybrid approach, in which agile practices coexist with the traditional practices of software development.
