Nonlinear Properties of Seawater as a Factor Determining Nonlinear Wave Propagation

Taking practical advantage of nonlinear acoustical interactions occurring in seawater [1, 2] requires knowledge of the parameter of nonlinearity B=A of this medium. The literature does not offer much reports on B=A parameter value for seawater. In the few papers concerning that address the issue, results concerning ocean waters with high salinity and at large depths are given [3], while studies concerning seawater with low salinity are published extremely seldom [4, 5]. Waters of the southern Baltic are characterized with low salinity not exceeding 20 PSU, temperature varying from 0 C to about 20 C, and depth practically limited to 100 meters. For such conditions, B=A parameter value ranges from about 4.3 (t = 0 C, S = 0 PSU, p = 0 Pa) to about 5.15 (t = 20 C, S = 20 PSU, p = 106 Pa) [6]. This paper discusses the effect of nonlinearity of the medium on the course of phenomenon of propagation of a high-intensity (finite amplitude) wave in the case of both strong and weak nonlinear distortions with special attention paid to hydrological conditions prevailing in the Baltic Sea.
