Cutting forces (power) could be considered from a point of view of modern fracture mechanics. The developed cutting model, derived from fracture mechanics, includes work of separation (fracture toughness) in addition to plasticity and friction, and also dullness of the cutting edge described by the cutting edge radius. Moreover, forecasting of the shear plane angle for the cutting models, broaden possibilities of energetic effects modeling of the sawing process even for small values of the uncut chip. Nevertheless, in the literature there is observed a really limited data about values of the mentioned wood properties such as fracture toughness and shear yield stresses in the shear plane. However, cutting forces may be also employed to determine not only toughness but also shear yield strength, which are then applied in the models. In this paper, the methodology of simultaneously determining fracture toughness and shear yield strength on the basis of cutting forces (power) obtained during sawing with circular saw blades is going to be described. That kind of approach allows to determine the mentioned properties for two anatomical wood grain directions.
