Using On-line Measurement by Electronic Nose and Computer Simulations for Real-time Control at WWTP

Continuous investigation of wastewater quality can be carried out by a device called an e-nose. One important feature of the proposed real-time control system for WWTP is that using on-line measurements by e-nose together (Figure 1) with technological sets picked on this basis by means of computer models, it is possible to change treatment process parameters, depending on the current quality of wastewater. It can be used for the measurements of wastewater headspace air in the measuring chamber. As the studies showed (Guz et al., 2015a), it can be possible to apply the method mentioned to estimate with high accuracy the values of wastewater parameters. The best correlation and narrow confidence interval was obtained for COD. Also good correlation was achieved for measurement of TSS, turbidity, and nitrogen compounds. Nonetheless, due to the fact that these parameters cannot be measured by e-nose directly, it should be treated as an additional measuring instrument for rapid on-line estimation of wastewater parameters as well as the device enabling early detection of non-standard states. In this case, both widely varying concentration of typical pollutants and the appearance of potentially deleterious substances that can trigger the breakdown of biological wastewater treatment (e.g. petroleum derivatives, pesticides, etc.) can be considered. Wastewater parameters estimation algorithm by means of e-nose should be also recalibrated by cyclically carried out standard measurements of wastewater quality parameters
