Control of the wind turbine generator

Wind power system consists of two main parts: wind turbine and electrical generator. Wind turbine converts the energy of the flowing air into mechanical energy, next generator converts this energy into electrical energy that is sent to the power system. These two processes should be realized with maximum efficiency and the following requirements for the control system can be formulated: opti-mal wind power conversion, compensation of torque ripples caused by wind gusts, high efficiency, stability, decoupled control of active and reactive power, immunity from faults or short circuits and machine sensorless control. The variable speed wind turbines have become the most dominating type of wind turbines. There are two dominant technologies. The main is geared high speed slip ring asynchronous machine with the converter in the rotor circuit, called double fed induction machine (DFIG) and the second is the gearless low speed synchronous machine (permanent magnet or excited) with the power converter in the main circuit. In the paper the selected problems of the WTE control are described. and laboratory tests based on the DFIG machine are presented.
