Reconstruction of 3D image of corona discharge streamer

In this paper, the method of reconstruction of the 3D structure of streamers in DC positive corona discharge in nozzle-to-plate electrode configuration is presented. For reconstructing of 3D image of corona discharge streamer we propose a stereographical method, where streamers are observed from several directions simultaneously. The multi-directional observation enabled to obtain fine positional coordinates of streamers for a relatively large area, without losing the possibility of identifying each streamer channel readily. The gated ICCD camera was used for streamer imaging. The optical set-up consisted of a number of mirrors and prisms was used to project images of streamer captured from different directions onto the CCD sensor. The computer algorithms were used for reconstruction of streamer 3D structure. We propose the 3D tree structure model of corona discharge streamer composed with nodes and edges between chosen couples of nodes, which enables easy computation of some important parameters of streamers. The 3D model can be derived directly from two projection images by global methods like evolutionary searching or particle simulations. In another type of methods named local methods, the morphological image operations are used for creation of two 2D models and later 3D model determination after simple computation. As a result, the 3D image of streamer is reconstructed and can be used for measuring of the streamer features such as branching angle and branching length.
