Feasibility of combined diesel engine - steam turbine in power station operating in the maritime

Compression-ignition engines used in ship technology as main propulsion engines are large units reaching even to 50-60 MW. Currently, the efficiency of such engines amounts to 45-50%. With such a large power unit, exhaust gases leaving the engine contain very large quantities of heat available for further treatment. Exhaust gases from the piston engine contain about 25% of the heat supplied to the engine in the fuel. Using the heat contained in combustion gases in steam turbine improves the efficiency of such a combined system. This allows to increase the efficiency from approximately 40% of the classical steam cycle to around 60% in the combined cycle. For reciprocating internal combustion engines, propelling the additional cycle of steam turbine gives notable savings in electricity generation. This article presents two variants of combined systems which include a combination of compression-ignition engine (Diesel engine) with steam turbine that uses the energy of the exhaust outlet: (1) the system with a single-pressure waste-heat boiler and (2) the two-pressure system. Such a solution can be applied in operating power plants. The plants may be placed on a barge, a vessel or an offshore platform.
