Viscous versus electromagnetic damping – amplification in a neighbourhood of a mechanism singular position

In the paper, damping of vibrations are considered and compared in a mechanical and in a electromechanical system. In the system, a continuous beam is considered as the main vibrating element. The compared dissipations methods are based on: viscous dampers and DC generators. To increase the possible damping effectiveness, velocity amplification is proposed, i.e., a mechanism is introduced between the beam and the damping element. Moreover, the mechanism configuration is set in a neighbourhood of its singular position. According to some observed fundamental differences in the guiding physical properties, A single homogenous modelling method in not applicable in the present case. Two structurally different sub-models have to be introduced in the final numerical model. The first sub-model corresponds to the amplification mechanism (considered as composed of rigid elements). It is modelled as a multibody system. The second sub-model corresponds to the continuous beam, modelled with used of the finite elements technique. To joint the sub-models, constraint equations are proposed. They express a revolute joint that is present between the mechanism’s second rod and the beam enforced to vibrate. Details are presented for both of these used modelling methods, as well as details of the proposed constraint equations. Finally effects of numerical investigations are presented. Details of the system behaviour are presented for different inertial properties of the system elements, as well as for different damping method. Efficiency and differences for both damping methods are underlined.
