A model of computational quality in large-scale computing systems was presented in the previous chapter of this book. This model describes three quality attributes: performance, reliability and energy efficiency. We assumed that all processes in the system are incessantly ready to perform calculations and that communication between the processes occurs immediately. These assumptions are not true for grid and volunteer computing systems. In a grid system, the model must concern performance and reliability of internode network communication. Also availability of data distribution and result collecting processes must be evaluated. In the case of volunteer computing systems we should additionally take into account the probability that calculations may not be completed by the computers belonging to independent Internet users. These systems must ensure resistance to colluding attacks carried out by Internet users (or rather processes run on the infected computers out of knowledge of their users). It also has an impact on system performance and its energy efficiency. Geographical dispersion of calculations in case of grid systems and shifting the cost of increased energy consumption on the Internet users in the type of volunteer computing result in financial profit on energy usage for the system owner.
