The anammox system has been consider as an economical option for treating high concentration of nitrogen and poor in biodegradable orgaednic carbon wastewaters. This process is attractive option compared with conventional nitrogen removal because it provides a significant saving in aeration and organic addition for denitrification. The anammox technology has been applied mostly for concentrated nitrogenous wastewater containing a significant amount of total ammonia. Anammox process mostly require a long solids retention time due to low kinetic growth even in optimum conditions. In the present work was tested the inoculation of MBR reactor with low initial concentration of anammox biomass (100 mg TSS L-1) and with short hydraulic retention time (HRT) (about 1 day). The concentration of 1 g TSS L-1 biomass was reached after two weeks from the start-up (ten times more than at the beginning). After start-up and process stability the maximum nitrogen removal rate (NRR) in the MBR anammox reactor was 1,08 g N L-1 d-1 and the specific anammox activity (SAA) reached 1,07 g N g VSS-1 d-1. The results point out that high NRRs can be obtained at short HRTs using MBR anammox reactor configuration. The inoculation of anammox bacteria is possible with a low concentration of biomass.
