This paper presents selected issues on the design of urban lighting forms including street luminaires within the urban environment. The purpose of this paper is to show the evolution of urban lighting forms, in terms of their performance, character, and in the context of the progression of new lighting technologies. The authors discuss chosen aspects related to the development of lighting forms and the changing role of lighting design in creating an image of a contemporary city. A hypothesis is formulated that the emergence of a new mass customization paradigm in the development and design of urban lighting forms might be noticed.
