In the nineteenth century the reorganization of the European city local trading model resulted in the network of a series of newly constructed covered market halls. The large-format objects superseded the trade forms of previous streets and squares. In the second half of the twentieth century the panoply of the public trade markets was dominated by food super- and hypermarkets. It seemed that the era of old-time market halls, splendid and poetic in their image had passed. Nineteenth century market halls survived due to their architectural and historical values and became the objects under lawful preservation. Most of them were modernized to maintain their functionality, although sometimes they were no longer commercial. However, the opening in October 2014 of the Markthal in Rotterdam shows that the idea of large-square and multi-purpose market halls located in the city-center is still an attractive urban and marketing solution for the city. The thesis assumes that the idea of the nineteenth-century market hall architecture found its continuation in the completed facility of Markthal in Rotterdam. The research results in indicating these characteristics of the first market hall architecture, which are continued today as significant factors in shaping the form of contemporary urban trade fair facilities. Similarities were found in the functional layouts of market halls, partitions and sizes of their trade stalls, implemented models of construction structures and materials, schemes of interior function distribution, compositional patterns and implementation of the most innovative for the time structural and installation technologies. The research observations are addressed to urban authorities to support the responsible decisions concerning the functioning of city trade fairs at present and in future.
