GDANSK-ORUNIA AS A LIVING LAB FOR INNOVATION IN REVITALISATION

Poland is at the beginning of the revitalization process, which started in 2015, when the legal framework had been provided. The revitalization process, understood as an innovative change that is based on four equally important aspects – the social, the economic, the infrastructural and the ecological ones, has been facing an important barrier in Poland. After over two decades of constant modernization, public involvement in planning is still rather symbolic. Having addressed these problems ever since 2010, a team of planners from the Gdansk University of Technology has been in constant cooperation with the local activists from the most neglected area in the city of Gdansk – Orunia. As part of the program „Quo vadis Gdansk? The citizens plan their city” (EEA founds), a certain model of a living lab has been established, seeking an innovative approach to the revitalization process. The project was run in the urban mentoring formula, which had been developed specifically for this task – to increase the planning capacities of local communities, in order to enforce the bottom-up processes.
