Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry for Plant Metabolomics

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plants are a valuable source of information on their growth, theirresponse to stress, and the condition of their habitat. The recent trend in the analysis of low-mass molecules ofplant origin is metabolomics, which in the context of volatiles is often referred to as volatolomics. It requires theuse of modern analytical instrumentation providing high throughput and a fast response, which are essentialwhen monitoring the plant’s response to stimuli. Proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) is an example of such a technique. Its use facilitatesthe determination of most plant-emitted volatiles. The sampled volatile compounds are ionized through a protontransfer reaction with hydronium ions (H3O+) and can subsequently be detected using MS. The use of PTR-MSfor real-time monitoring of volatile metabolites emitted by particular parts of plants, entire plants, or complexvegetation systems is becoming increasingly popular.
