  • Analysis of IMS/NGN call processing performance using phase-type distributions
    • Sylwester Kaczmarek
    • Maciej Sac
    2013

This work is a continuation of our research on the traffic model dedicated for design and analysis of the Next Generation Network (NGN), which is standardized for distribution of current and future multimedia services based on the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). Our analytical and simulation models allow evaluation of mean Call Set-up Delay E(CSD) as well as mean Call Disengagement Delay E(CDD) in a single domain of IMS/NGN. Ensuring proper values of these call processing performance metrics, formerly known as Grade of Service (GoS) parameters, is very important for satisfaction of users and commercial success of IMS/NGN. In this work we investigate possibilities of improving conformity of the analytical and simulation model. For this reason we perform calculations using PH/PH/1 queuing systems, in which message inter-arrival and inter-departure times are described by phase-type distributions. The obtained analytical results are compared to our previous queuing approaches (M/G/1 systems and approximations of G/G/1 based on two or three moments of arrival distribution and two moments of service distribution) and also verified by a simulation model, which precisely implements the operation (algorithms) of all network elements. As a consequence, conclusions and necessary future work with the presented traffic model are provided.

    2013 JOURNAL OF CHROMATOGRAPHY A

A new sensitive method based on pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and purification by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) prior to ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) was developed for the determination in fish homogenate, liver and muscle of twenty pharmaceuticals compounds and metabolites from seven commonly used therapeutic families. An extensive matrix effect evaluation was performed in order to select the best approach when analyzing such complex matrices. Limits of detection (MDLs) for the target compounds were in the range of 0.03–0.50 ng/g for fish homogenate, 0.01–0.42 ng/g for fish muscle, and 0.08–0.98 ng/g for fish liver. The method was applied to fish tissues of eleven fish species from four heavily impacted Mediterranean rivers. Nine compounds from five therapeutic families were measured at concentrations higher than MDLs. Highest levels were found in trout liver, with a maximum concentration of 18 ng/g for carbamazepine, whereas the most ubiquitous compound was diclofenac.

In this paper the results of calculations of combined STIG (CSTIG) installation are presented. The influence of main thermodynamic parameters on specific electrical work and efficiency of the gas turbine were analysed.

  • Analysis of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables using QuEChERS sample preparation method and gas chromatography with electron capture detection
    • Jolanta Stocka
    • Marek Biziuk
    2013

Pesticides are a numerous and diverse group of chemical compounds. They are some of the most toxic substances contaminating the environment, which are used to eliminate pests in agriculture and the household. Despite considerable progress in the development of methods for preparing samples for analysis and for the final determination of analytes, the analysis of pesticides in biological samples continues to present challenges to analysts. A number of problems crop up in the analysis of pesticide residues: one is the complexity and diversity of matrices in biological materials; another is the low concentration of pesticide in samples of fruit and vegetables. Approaches are being sought to develop pesticide determination techniques that are quick, simple, cheap, effective and safe. QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) is one such method. QuEChERS sample preparation was used for the determination of pesticides residues in samples of fruits and vegetables

  • Analysis of Position Calculating Methods in Indoor Environment
    • Agnieszka Czapiewska
    2013

In the paper a modified gradient method has been proposed for position calculation on basis of distance measurement in indoor environment. It is shown that the well-known Chan method of position calculation is inefficient in indoor circumstances. Author presents Chan and modified gradient methods and achieved results for each one for real measurements.

    2013 Full text Przegląd Elektrotechniczny

Power control in spark ignition engines by regulating the intake air is performed. The control unit needs information about the air pressure conditions which then enters the combustion chamber. The information about the intake air pressure is an important quantity for optimal control of combustion mixtures. The paper describes some types of sensors that are used to measure the air intake temperature. Air pressure in the intake manifold affects the operation of the engine and also the extent of the loss or utility of the engine operation. Size of the over voltage sparks is also influenced by the air pressure in the combustion chamber which is proportional to the pressure manifold.

    2013

This paper presents analysis of rolling resistance of tires with RUN FLAT insert applying drum method and radial characteristic. The conducted studies indicated changes in operational properties of wheel, occurring as a result of inflation pressure drop in the wheel. As regards radial elasticity, such changes result in significant drop of radial rigidity and increase of static deflection and increase of tire rolling resistance. The application of Run-Flat insert in wheels allows for driving with depressurized tire, but road tests disclosed that several restrictions to the driving with flat tire must apply. The wheel with Run-Flat insert allows in case of depressurization for good force transfer in radial direction from the wheel to the pavement but with significantly increased radial rigidity and considerable tire deflection. Driving without inflation pressure leads to high increase of rolling resistance thus also to very high increase of tire temperature. The wheels with Run-Flat inserts provide safe vehicle driving after tire depressurization, but only for very limited distance and time. It is also difficult for driver to control the tire condition and assess distance that may be driven without total tire destruction.

  • ANALYSIS OF THE PUNCHING FAILURE MECHANISM IN WORKING PLATFORMS
    • Katarzyna Białek-Platova
    2013

Paper presents an analysis of the shear failure mechanism which occurs from the punching of a working platform layer in relation to its thickness, grain size arrangement and mechanical properties, taking into consideration the interaction with soft subgrade. The study is based on the observations of performance of natural scale structures (Streefkerk) and the results of model investigations numerically represented with the use of FEM capabilities, constitutive models for soft soils (Soft soil model) and real characteristics of the soil. Two analyzed cases are presented - unreinforced and reinforced working platforms.

The purpose of this study is to propose and evaluate new procedures for determination of fuel combustion products, anti-corrosive and de-icing compounds in runoff water samples collected from the airports located in different regions and characterized by different levels of the activity expressed by the number of flights and the number of passengers (per year). The most difficult step in the analytical procedure used for the determination of PAHs, benzotriazoles and glycols is sample preparation stage, due to diverse matrix composition, the possibility of interference associated with the presence of components with similar physicochemical properties. In this study, five different versions of sample preparation using extraction techniques, such as: LLE and SPE, were tested. In all examined runoff water samples collected from the airports, the presence of PAH compounds and glycols was observed. In majority of the samples, BT compounds were determined. Runoff water samples collected from the areas of Polish and British international airports as well as local airports had similar qualitative composition, but quantitative composition of the analytes was very diverse. New and validated analytical methodologies ensure that the necessary information for assessing the negative impact of airport activities on the environment can be obtained.

The Svalbard archipelago differs from other polar regions due to its specific environmental conditions and geographic location which make the area gather pollution from long-range transport. Due to the recent development in analytical techniques it is possible to determine the concentration of pollutants at the level present there. This paper collates and discusses the information from the literature about: pollutants present in various components of the ecosystem, the number and kind of research centers conducting analytical studies, and remediation programs and projects realized in the area of the Svalbard archipelago. Monitoring the state of the environment of the Arctic region is extremely important because of the unique opportunity to observe the direct influence of pollutants on processes in the studied area. Active participation of many countries in research, international actions aimed at protecting the polar region, and highlighting the scale of the problem have helped decrease the concentration of some toxic compounds in the Arctic environment. The data obtained in that way do not only constitute a source of information about the changes in the polar environment but also enable an evaluation of the influence of particular pollutants on the global ecosystem.

  • Anomalous decay of quantum correlations of quantum-dot qubits
    • Katarzyna Roszak
    • Paweł Mazurek
    • Paweł Horodecki
2013 Full text PHYSICAL REVIEW A

We study the evolution of quantum correlations, quantified by the geometric discord, of two excitonic quantum-dot qubits under the influence of the phonon environment. We show that the decay of these correlations differs substantially from the decay of entanglement. Instead of displaying sudden-death-type behavior, the geometric discord shows a tendency to undergo transitions between different types of decay, is sensitive to nonlocal phase factors, and may already be enhanced by weak environment-mediated interactions. Hence, two-qubit quantum correlations are more robust under decoherence processes, while showing a richer and more complex spectrum of behavior under unitary and nonunitary evolution

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and binding effects of gooseberry, a less-stud-ied berry, and to compare with blueberry and cranberry in the model of interaction with human serum albumin (HSA). The relationship between the scavenging properties of dietary polyphenols of the selected berries and their affinities for HSA were investigated by fluorescence anal- ysis. In order to perform the extraction and identification of the antioxidants present in the samples, different types of extraction solvents were used, such as water, ethyl acetate, and diethyl ether. The polyphenols, tannins, anthocyanins and ascorbic acid contents, and the total antioxidant capacities (TACs) of the berry extracts were assessed by using ESI–MS, FTIR, and radical scavenging assays. The contents of bioactive compounds and the levels of TACs in water extracts differed significantly and were the highest in water extracts in comparison with other extracts in all the investigated berries (P<0.05). Gooseberry water extracts contained: polyphenols (mg GAE/g DW)—5.37 ± 0.6, tannins (mg CE/g DW)—0.71 ± 0.2, anthocyanins (mg CGE/g DW)—12.0 ± 1.2, ascorbic acid (mg AA/g DW)— 5.15 ± 0.5, and TACs ( lMTE/g DW) by ABTS and FRAP assays were 15.53 ±1.6 and 6.51 ± 0.7, respectively. In conclusion, the bioactivity of gooseberry was lower than blueberries and cranberries. The antioxidant and binding properties of gooseberries in comparison with widely consumed blueberries and cranberries can be used as a new source for food supplementation.
