  • Environmental risk- based ranking of solvents by the combination of multimedia model and multi-criteria decision analysis
    • Marek Tobiszewski
    • Jacek Namieśnik
    • Francisco Pena-Pereira
    2017 Full text GREEN CHEMISTRY

A novel procedure for assessing the environmental risk related to solvents emissions has been developed. The assessment of risk is based on hazard and exposure detailed investigations. The potential exposure related to different environmental phases is calculated with basic multimedia model, that gives the percentage distribution of solvent in environmental compartments as a result. Specific hazards– toxicological, environmental persistence or photochemical ozone creation potential data – have been assigned to each compartment. The environmental distribution of solvents gives the weights applied in multicriteria decision analysis, which was applied to obtain full ranking of solvents. The results show that alcohols and esters can be considered as low environmental risk solvents, while chlorinated solvents or aromatic hydrocarbons are the most problematic ones. The assessment procedure holds promise in solvent selection during process design as well as in finding alternatives to hazardous solvents used in existing processes.

  • Environmentally friendly polymer-rubber composites obtained from waste tyres: A review
    • Maciej Sienkiewicz

    • Kaja Borzędowska-Labuda
    • Justyna Kucińska-Lipka
2017 Full text JOURNAL OF CLEANER PRODUCTION

The paper is transdisciplinary. The complex overview on changes in policy and approach to waste tyres that leads to both solving environmental problem of post consumer tyres and creating environmentally friendlier novel materials are presented. It is shown that in the world, the amount of polymer wastes increases every year. Most of them are in the form of post-consumer tyres. Recycling and recovery of such tyres is a serious environmental problem due to their very complex structure and composition. Moreover, storage of the whole post-consumer tyres takes a lot of space in landfills and pollute the environment. However, recently it has been reported a great progress in sustainable management of waste tyres.

2017 Full text INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF DIFFERENCE EQUATIONS

We show that the well-known theory for classical ordinary differential equations with separated variables is not valid in case of equations on time scales. Namely, the uniqueness of solutions does not depend on the convergence of appropriate integrals.

2017 Full text Discussiones Mathematicae Graph Theory

We give some results regarding the equitable chromatic number for l-corona product of two graphs: G and H, where G is an equitably 3- or 4-colorable graph and H is an r-partite graph, a cycle or a complete graph. Our proofs lead to polynomial algorithms for equitable coloring of such graph products provided that there is given an equitable coloring of G.

  • Ergonomia we współczesnej architekturze

2017 Full text Zeszyty Naukowe Małopolskiej Wyższej Szkoły Ekonomicznej w Tarnowie

Artykuł stanowi refleksję nad współczesną architekturą w ujęciu rozwiązań ergonomicznych. Analizą objęto nieprawidłowości wybranych obiektów użyteczności publicznej. Szczególnie zwrócono uwagę na części wspólne: strefa wejściowa – w terenie i w budynku, klatka schodowa, recepcja (pomieszczenia do przyjmowania klientów, sekretariaty, poczekalnie), sanitariat.

  • Ergonomic Aspects of Transport of Patient through the Operating Theatre
    • Rafał Janowicz
2017 Full text IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering

One of the most crucial decisions to be made while designing and re-modernizing an operating theatre is selecting a method of transporting the patient through the hospital’s spatial arrangement. This decision, while irrelevant at first thought, implies numerous project and functional consequences. Designing an operating theatre within a hospital is related to numerous specialist requirements with an aim of minimizing the risk of microbiological contamination. Surgeries conducted on the operating theatre take place within sterile areas, usually within a protection area provided with laminar air flow. Furthermore, currently in Poland, there are applicable rules requiring to have entrances secured with tract locks leading towards the operational rooms for hospital personnel, patients as well as hospital equipment and materials. Such construction of an operating theatre provides the necessity of applying detailed procedures of transporting the patient, who in most cases is not able to reach the surgery on his or her own. In operating theatres functioning during the last decades, the operating tables were most often fixed to the floor. This resulted in the need to relocate the patient, who is ready for surgery, for several times. The consequences of this included risks related shock due to the relocations for the patient as well as physical overload for the medical staff. The aim of hereby article is to present modern designer solutions providing the opportunity to enhance ergonomics of using the operating theatre.

  • Errors of a Linear Current Approximation in High-Speed PMSM Drives
    • Leszek Jarzębowicz
2017 Full text IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS

Current sampling techniques and predictive algorithms used in the digital control of electric drives rely on a simple mathematical model that assumes linear current changes upon constant supplying voltages. This paper identifies rotor movement as a factor that makes this assumption invalid when the rotor covers an angular distance of a few tens of degrees during the control interval duration. The errors of the linear current approximation were quantified both by simulation and by experiment for an exemplary high-speed permanent magnet synchronous motor drive.

All featured in-situ tests were conducted based on Polish experiences and Standards used in engineering practice.

  • Establishment of the Right of Electricity Transmission Easement Through Court Proceedings
    • Malgorzata Busko
    • Karolina Elzbieciak
    • Paweł Wysocki
    2017

Including the amendment of the Civil Code Act on May 30, 2008, issues related to the right of easement of transmission were introduced to it. Such a regulation was necessary in view of the need to define the legal status of transmission facilities, existing and designed on real estate property. The purpose of the study is to analyze issues related to the definition of the spatial extent of the law of transmission easement for power grids. The analysis of the law and cases of legal proceedings concerning the establishment of the easement of transmission show that the current state of Polish legislation in this respect does not provide a sufficient basis for clear determining the scope of the right of transmission easement. The effect of these unclear laws is visualized on the example of the power grid in the form of a transformer station pole and a medium voltage line.

  • Esteraza GDSL z psychrotolerancyjnego szczepu Pseudomonas sp. S9 - konstrukcja systemów ekspresyjnych opartych o komórki Escherichia coli i Pichia pastoris, produkcja, oczyszczanie i charakterystyka uzyskanych białek rekombinowanych
    • Monika Wicka-Grochocka
    2017 Full text

W systemie ekspresyjnym E. coli wyprodukowano dwa warianty białek: EstS9Auto (białko zbudowane z domeny katalitycznej, domeny autotransportera, domeny oligohistydynowej) i EstS9short (białko zbudowane z domeny katalitycznej i domeny oligohistydynowej). Oba warianty białek, tj. EstS9Auto i EstS9short, produkowane były w systemie E. coli w postaci nieaktywnej, w ciałkach inkluzyjnych. W związku z powyższym, otrzymanie preparatów obu białek umożliwiających oznaczenie ich właściwości enzymatycznych wymagało przeprowadzenia oczyszczania tychże białek w warunkach denaturujących, z zastosowaniem chromatografii metalopowinowactwa, a następnie przeprowadzenia procesu renaturacji. αEstS9Auto i αEstS9short.

  • Estimating inequality aversion from subjective assessments of the just noticeable differences in welfare
    • Stanisław Kot
2017 Full text EQUILIBRIUM Quarterly Journal of Economics and Economic Policy

Research background: In Economics, the concept of inequality aversion corresponds with the concept of risk aversion in the literature on making decision under uncertainty. The risk aversion is estimated on the basis of subjective reactions of people to various lottery prospects. In Economics, however, an efficient method of estimating inequality aversion has not been developed yet. Purpose of the article: The main aim of this paper is to develop the method of estimating inequality aversion. Methods: The method is based on two income thresholds which are subjectively assessed by surveyed respondents. Given the level of household income, just noticeable worsening of household welfare is perceived below the first threshold, whereas just noticeable improvement of household welfare is perceived above the second threshold. The thresholds make possible effective calculations of the parameter of the Arrow-Pratt’s constant inequality aversion utility function. In this way, an individual utility of income becomes an empirically observable economic phenomenon. Findings & Value added: In this paper, two theorems are proved which provide the guidance on how to identify a proper version of the above function. The proposed method is tested on the basis of statistical data from the archival survey conducted among Polish households in 1999. The statistical analysis of those data reveals the appearance of convex utility functions as well as concave ones. Nevertheless, the prevailing part of the Polish society exhibited inequality aversion in the year 1999. Another result of this paper is that inequality aversion diminishes as income increases

The article presents estimation of measurement uncertainty of a liquid mass flow using the orifice plate. This subject is essential because of the widespread use of this type of flow meters, which renders not only the quantitative estimation but also qualitative results of this type so those measurements are important. To achieve this goal, the authors of the paper propose to use the theory of uncertainty. The article shows the analysis of the measurement uncertainty using two methods: one based on the "Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement" (GUM) of the International Organization for Standardization with the use of the law of propagation of uncertainty, and the second one using the Monte Carlo numerical method. The paper presents a comparative analysis of the results obtained with both of these methods.

  • Estimation of DC motor parameters using a simple CMOS camera
    • Zdzisław Kowalczuk
    • Tomasz Merta
    2017

Different components of control systems for mobile robots are based on dynamic models. In low-cost solutions such a robot is wheeled and equipped with DC motors, which have to be included in the model of the robot. The model is fairly simple but determination of its parameters needs not to be easy. For instance, DC motor parameters are typically identified indirectly using suitable measurements, concerning engine voltage, current, and rotation speed under various conditions. The paper describes a method of estimating the DC motor parameters of a mobile robot using a simple CMOS camera. A color marker is attached to the robot platform, which indicates the position of the robot in the taken video images. Step excitation of the voltage input of the engine is applied, and estimation of robot's movement parameters is next performed by suitable (image) processing. Then the response of the identified model is adjusted to the measured step response using Matlab functions, based on least squares. In this experiment the available maximum camera framerate appeared to be too low to record the robot movement properly. This obstacle is overcome by using the utility of CMOS cameras concerning the possibility of trading-off framerate to resolution.

  • Estimation of fracture toughness and shear yield stress of orthotropic materials in cutting with rotating tools

2017 Full text ENGINEERING FRACTURE MECHANICS

The cutting force is an energetic effect of splitting material, and might be considered from a point of view of modern fracture mechanics. Forecasting of the shear plane angle in cutting broaden possibilities for modelling of the cutting process even for thin uncut chips. Such mathematical model has been developed here for description of the orthotropic materials’ cutting on the base of fracture theory, and includes work of separation (fracture toughness) in addition to the material plasticity and friction. The original methodology of simultaneous determination of the fracture toughness and the shear yield strength on the basis of wood cutting forces (or cutting power) is also presented in this paper. The set of data necessary for computation can be easily obtained while cutting wood with common rotating tools, such as a circular saw or a router bit. The results generated include both fracture toughness and shear yield stresses in the shear plane, separately for two anatomical directions of wood. The simplicity and reliability of this method provides wide range of practical applications.

    2017 Full text

In this paper, we present nonlinear estimators of nonstationary and multicomponent signal attributes (parameters, properties) which are instantaneous frequency, spectral (or group) delay, and chirp-rate (also known as instantaneous frequency slope). We estimate all of these distributions in the time-frequency domain using both finite and infinite impulse response (FIR and IIR) narrow band filers for speech analysis. Then, we present few examples including a novel type of imaging joining energy and phase acceleration in a single picture. Finally, we provide an open-source project - ccROJ - Time-Frequency C++ Framework of which we are authors and that is used for computing the presented figures.

  • Estymacja azymutu w radarze z obracaną anteną i szeroką wiązką

    2017

  • EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NON-PHYSICAL SPEED MANAGEMENT MEASURES

    2017

The subject of the Authors' analyses is a group of non-physical speed management measures. How effective they are depends primarily on how willing drivers are to accept restrictions. Social and cultural factors play a major role. The effectiveness of these measures is not clear and requires further research. The authors conducted such research and evaluated the effects of nonphysical speed management measures on driver behaviour and road safety. Changes in behaviour were evaluated by examining speed parameters and how they changed depending on the measure. When evaluating the effects of selected speed management measures on road safety, the analysis looked at crashes using the simple "before" and "after" method with trend control. The so called "power model" was also used for the evaluation with some of its parameters modified. The research covered: local speed limits, area speed limits TEMPO 20 and TEMPO 30, sections with traffic calming measures and sections with additional speed control signs. Empirical speed tests were conducted at the total of 88 test sites on regional roads. The crash data analysis covered 152 test sites. The research helped to estimate speed reductions caused by the particular speed management measures. Depending on the measure the average speed went down by 6.8-16.3%. The paper includes the results of evaluations studying the effects of selected speed management measures on the crashes. The measures were found to be very effective for serious injury and fatality crashes. Based on speed and crash data coefficients of "power model" were evaluated The effects of the speed management measures under analysis on road safety are strongly linked to local conditions.

  • EVALUATING THE INFLUENCE OF BENDING STRESS ON A 1H18N9 STEEL SHAFT WEAR PROCESS IN A WATER LUBRICATED SLIDING BEARING WITH A RUBBER BUSHING
    • Ewa Piątkowska
    2017 Full text TRIBOLOGIA

The issue of excessive wear of shaft journals co-working with a rubber bearing has been unexplained so far. Premature and sometimes very intensive wear of ship sliding bearings in water conditions is the reason for carry out very expensive and more frequent than expected repairs. The authors (E. Piątkowska, W. Litwin) made an attempt to find a case that influences the value of this wear described in the paper “Attempt at Evaluating the Influence of Bending Stress on Shaft Wear Process in Water Lubricated Sliding Bearing with Rubber Bush” (TRIBOLOGY 1/2017). These studies, however, did not explain the dependency of the wear process but showed how to progress further to find the answer to the question about the effect of bending stress on shaft wear. The research is continued on a modified test stand, and their results are presented in this paper. The profilographometer was used to evaluate the wear of the journal shaft. To compare wear intensity, roughness profiles have been 'removed' from the journals both before and after co-operation. They were compared in terms of bending stresses and bending moments.

To answer growing demand on products adapted to clients’ individual needs, it is required to develop new ways of measurement and rating for batch production processes. The researchers developed method which allows synthetic and complex evaluation, as well as improvement of these processes. Case study with participating observation, non-participating observation, interviews, and the analysis of historical data was conducted in order to analyse a production company. Researchers developed concept of a multi-criteria evaluation method, with rating based on the following criterions: market, economical, ecological, social, technological, planning and general development – each including individual indicators.

  • Evaluation of Body Surface Area Formulae Based on 3D Body Scans
    • Grzegorz Redlarski
    • Marek Krawczuk
    • Aleksander Pałkowski
    2017

Human body surface area (BSA) is an established parameter for the calculation of chemotherapy drugs dosage, treatment of chronic hepatitis B, treatment of burns or for establishing a dosing regimen for antimicrobials. Although being a critical parameter, usage of modern 3D scanners, which would measure the exact BSA value, is often impossible in time-sensitive operations or for patients unable to withstand the scanning process. Therefore, over the last decades considerable research efforts have been devoted to development of simple formulae for BSA approximation. The formulae use a small number of state variables (weight, height, age, sex), which are intended to be easily obtained for every patient. The formulae parameters were estimated independently for isolated groups of subjects, which should rise suspicion whether any of the formulae used is indeed effective and safe for medical treatment. Here, we provide an extended analysis of 43 BSA formulae based on 152 patients scanned with a hand-held 3D scanner. Upon comparison of the real BSA values with estimations made by the formulae, we can conclude that most of the formulae exhibit a high relative BSA error, ranging from 9.83% to 43.27%.
