  • LabVIEW-based intelligent system of protection against electric shock for photovoltaic installations
    • Stanisław Czapp
    • Dariusz Świsulski
    2017

Evaluation of shock hazard in installations with photovoltaic sources of energy is more complicated than in a conventional low voltage system. In case of earth fault in photovoltaic generators, that are connected to the AC power public grid, a composite waveform of earth fault current in the installation may occur. For composite waveforms, the safety criteria should be modified. The paper considers the effect of the composite waveforms on the threshold of ventricular fibrillation. A LabVIEW-based computer system for evaluation of shock hazard, according to the modified safety criteria, is presented. The new-idea, intelligent system of electrical safety enables for selective disconnection of supply only when real hazard of the ventricular fibrillation occurs. By using this intelligent system both effective protection against electric shock and high reliability of supply are achieved.

  • Lamp of adjustable spectrum for photographic usage
    • Adam Mazikowski
    • Mateusz Feldzensztajn
    2017

Photography is a unique rapidly growing interdisciplinary field encompassing aspects of science, art and technology. Expectations of photographers are steadily increasing with the development of technology. One of the areas playing a crucial role in photography is lighting. Consequently, several types of light sources for photographic use have been developed. The ongoing research in this field concentrates on lamps with tunable CCT (Correlated Color Temperature). In this paper, we present a lamp, which emission spectrum can be tailored without affecting the output luminous flux. Intended for photographic uses, the lamp is based on an integrating sphere and a selection of LEDs. As the LED drivers, DC-DC converters controlled by a Raspberry PI were applied. Design process, including the selection of LED wavelengths, is presented. Output characteristics of the lamp were measured using the setup containing the spectrometer. The results of these experiments show good agreement with the spectrum set on the microcomputer.

  • Lattice filter based autoregressive spectrum estimation with joint model order and estimation bandwidth adaptation
    • Maciej Niedźwiecki
    • Michał Meller
    • Damian Chojnacki
    2017 Full text

The problem of parametric, autoregressive model based estimation of a time-varying spectral density function of a nonstationary process is considered. It is shown that estimation results can be considerably improved if identification of the autoregressive model is carried out using the two-sided doubly exponentially weighted lattice algorithm which combines results yielded by two one-sided lattice algorithms running forward in time and backward in time, respectively. It is also shown that the model order and the most appropriate estimation bandwidth can be efficiently selected using the suitably modified Akaike’s final prediction error criterion.

  • Left-handed propagation characteristics of a dielectric and metal-loaded periodic circular waveguide
    • Adam Kusiek
    • Jerzy Mazur
2017 JOURNAL OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES AND APPLICATIONS

In this paper, a periodic dielectric/metallic rod is located in a circular waveguide to obtain left-handed operation. Two geometries of the dielectric/metallic rod are proposed and examined. The dispersion characteristics of the investigated waveguides are obtained using a surface impedance model. Moreover, equivalent circuit models are proposed allowing for calculation of the dispersion characteristics and scattering parameters of the considered waveguide structures. The numerical results are compared with those obtained from commercial software and from experiment. The obtained results prove the left-handed properties of the investigated structures.

  • Light box for investigation of characteristics of optoelectronics detectors
    • Agnieszka Szreder
    • Adam Mazikowski
    2017

In this paper, a light box for investigation of characteristics of optoelectronic detectors is described. The light box consists of an illumination device, an optical power sensor and a mechanical enclosure. The illumination device is based on four types of high-power light emitting diodes (LED): white light, red, green and blue. The illumination level can be varied for each LED independently by the driver and is measured by optical power sensor. The mechanical enclosure provides stable mounting points for the illumination device, sensor and the examined detector and protects the system from external light, which would otherwise strongly influence the measurement results. Uniformity of illumination distribution provided by the light box for all colors is good, making the measurement results less dependent on the position of the examined detector. The response of optoelectronic detectors can be investigated using the developed light box for each LED separately or for any combination of up to four LED types. As the red, green and blue LEDs are rather narrow bandwidth sources, spectral response of different detectors can be examined for these wavelength ranges. The described light box can be used for different applications. Its primary use is in a student laboratory setup for investigation of characteristics of optoelectronic detectors. Moreover, it can also be used in various colorimetric or photographic applications. Finally, it will be used as a part of demonstrations from the fields of vision and color, performed during science fairs and outreach activities increasing awareness of optics and photonics.

The growth processes of nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) thin films on fused silica optical fibers with UV-induced long-period gratings (LPGs) were investigated with regard to biosensing applications. The films were deposited using a linear antenna microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system, which allows for the growth of diamond at temperatures below 350°C. The films exhibited a high refractive index n = 2.32, as estimated at λ = 550 nm. The biosensing applications of NCD-coated LPG were considered in relation to bovine serum albumin (BSA) as an external medium. In response to BSA binding and the subsequent formation of a thin bio-layer on the NCD surface, the LPG resonances slightly split and shifted towards lower wavelengths.

We discuss the finite element modeling of porous materials such as bones using the linear micropolar elasticity. In order to solve static boundary-value problems, we developed new finite elements, which capture the micropolar behavior of the material. Developed elements were implemented in the commercial software ABAQUS. The modeling of a femur bone with and without implant under various stages of healing is discussed in details

  • Linear revitalization - problems and challenges. Discursive article
    • Aleksandra Sas-Bojarska
2017 PROBLEMY ROZWOJU MIAST Kwartalnik Naukowy

The aim of the article, defined by the author as discursive, is to give the answer as to whether within ‘revitalization’ we should distinguish the notion of ‘linear revitalization’ – not yet defined in Polish and English-language literature. The author presents the thesis that we should do so by presenting the idea, its specific character and its role. This kind of action seems to have, in the author’s opinion, a positive influence on contemporary cities regarding the growing problems that result from fragmentation and lack of physical, social, economic and ecological connectivity. The general overview of revitalization provides the basis for proving the necessity of specific solutions relating to degraded linear structures. Linear revitalization, as presented, relates to different city structures which need renewal. It may become an important tool for sustainable city development and may improve the quality of life. Theoretical deliberations, presenting the reasons, needs, ideas, draft classifications, tasks and positive effects of linear revitalization have been supplemented by some case studies from Poland and abroad. The benefits to whole city structures of carrying out linear revitalization are presented. They justify the creation of a new definition and further research. The approach presented, being in the author’s opinion the beginning of the discussion, meets the need to look for effective new methods and tools within urban revitalization, solving the problems and fulfilling the new challenges of contemporary cities.

  • Lipidomika mleka kobiecego - wiele do odkrycia.
    • Dorota Garwolińska
    • Weronika Hewelt-Belka

    2017 Analityka: Nauka i Praktyka

Thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC), Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), Infrared Imaging Themography (IR) and True-Colour Digital Image Processing (TDIP) have been successfully used in non-intrusive technical, industrial and biomedical studies and applications. These four tools (based on the desktop computers) have come together during the past two decades to produce a powerful advanced experimental technique as a judgment of quality of information that cannot be obtained from any other imaging procedure. The brief summary of the history of this technique is reviewed, principal methods and tools are described and some examples are presented. With this objective, a new experimental technique have been developed and applied to the study of heat and mass transfer and for biomedical diagnosis. Automated evaluation allows determining the heat and flow visualisation and locate the area of suspicious tissue of human body.

  • Liquid residence time in vortex separators
    • Jerzy Sawicki
    • Marlena A. Gronowska
    2017

Centrifugal force enhances gravitational separation of suspension (vortex separators), as well as allows regulation of liquid discharge (vortex flow controls). Furthermore, it elongates the effective residence time of liquid inside the chamber in comparison to non-circulative flow. Laboratorz measurements, described in the paper, indicate that average liquid residence time for circulative flow exceeds 50% of plug-flow time, whereas for non-circulative flow it reaches hardly 15% of plug-flow time.

    2017 Full text Handel Wewnętrzny

The purpose of the current study is to develop a literature review on “online consumer engagement” (OCE). Articles from 2006 to 2016 published in the marketing journals and other related journals have been reviewed to summarise the OCE concept. Although there is not an agreed definition and conceptualisation of OCE, this study classified the concept as either behavioural or psychological within the dimensions of cognitive, emotional, and behavioural type. The objects of OCE also were grouped as engagement with a brand, online brand community, and multiple engagement objects to address the importance of interactive nature of “customer engagement” (CE), which allows customers to engage with multiple objects at the same time. Finally, this study provides the most updated review on the OCE concept in the context of online engagement.

  • Living and working beneath the sea – next approach
    • Lech Rowiński
2017 Full text Polish Maritime Research

The idea of living beneath the sea is very new if compared with millennia of shipping activity. In fact, ocean surface was considered mainly as medium suitable for transport of persons and goods as well as aggression and robbery. More practical attempts to live “on” the water surface are limited to well protected internal waters. The presented concept of “an underwater-above water accommodation, especially for residential purposes” proposes a possible solution. It was developed under the name of “Water Discus”. To some extent it is a response to expressed requirements of potential operators as well ideas of European Commision regarding development of the “blue economy” (doc COM (2014) 254). Several basic research and design experiments were required to achieve current understanding of the concept requirements..
