2013 JOURNAL OF AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD CHEMISTRY

Kiwifruit is a subtropical fruit that is very popular among consumers. Kiwifruit ‘Hayward’ (Actinidia deliciosa C.F. Liang et A.R. Ferguson) is an important source of bioactive compounds and possesses high antioxidant capacity, but its value can be changed during ripening. The aim of this study was to compare the levels of total polyphenols (TP), ascorbic acid (AA), and total antioxidant capacities (TACs) of ethylene-treated and nontreated kiwifruits ‘Hayward’ from conventional and organic farming. The influence of these fruits on lipid profile, TAC, and liver enzymes in plasma of rats fed diets with cholesterol was studied. Ethylene treatment shortened the ripening of kiwifruits. Ethylene-treated kiwifruits from organic farming (OHE) have the highest contents of TP and TAC. The experiment in vivo was performed during 33 days on male Wistar rats (111 ± 5 g), divided into six groups: one without cholesterol, control (C), and five groups with 1% of cholesterol (Chol).

  • Heat Transfer During Pool Boiling of Water, Methanol and R141b on Porous Coated Horizontal Tube Bundles
    • Janusz Cieśliński
    • Krzysztof Krasowski
2013 Full text JOURNAL OF ENHANCED HEAT TRANSFER

This paper presents the results of experimental investigation of water, methanol and R141b refrigerant boiling on horizontal porous coated tube bundles supposed to represent a flooded-type evaporator. Experiments were carried out for a bundle of 19 tubes in triangular layout for two pitch-to-diameter ratio values – 1.7 and 2.0 – in atmospheric and sub-atmospheric pressure conditions. Average heat transfer coefficients – both local, row-specific, and for the whole bundle – were determined. The boiling process on a bundle was visualized with a CCD camera and laser sheet technique. A Nusselt type correlation equation allowing the calculation of the average heat transfer coefficient for boiling on porous coated tube bundles has been proposed.

  • Heat transfer intensification by enlarged surface roughness in the plate heat exchanger

    2013

In the paper an experimental analysis of passive heat transfer intensification technique employed in the case of the plate heat exchanger is presented. The passive intensification was obtained by a modification of the heat transfer surface. The roughness of surface was increased by a use of glass micro-beads. Single-phase convective heat transfer in the water-water system was studied. The experiment was accomplished in two stages. In the first stage the commercial plate heat exchanger was investigated, while in the second one – the identical heat exchanger but with the modified heat transfer surface. The direct comparison of thermal and flow characteristics between both devices was possible due to the assurance of equivalent conditions during the experiment. Equivalent conditions mean the same volumetric flow rates and the same media’s temperatures at the inlet of heat exchangers in the corresponding measurements’ series. The thermal and hydraulic characteristics are presented. The thermal analysis shows that in some range of heat flux density the overall heat transfer coefficient was higher for the commercial heat exchanger, while for the other was higher for the heat exchanger with modified surface. The influence of larger roughness on heat transfer cannot unequivocally be evaluated. Therefore as the next step the systematic investigations of model heat exchangers (only with one hot and one cold passage) will be conducted.

    2013 ORGANIC & BIOMOLECULAR CHEMISTRY

X-ray crystallographic analysis of the title compounds revealed that they assume a folded helical con- formation of an approximate C2 symmetry in the solid state. Dithioamide, diselenoamide and monoselenoamide were resolved to enantiomers by inclusion crystallization with optically active diols (TADDOLs). The absolute configuration of the guest molecules in the complexes was assigned as P. The optical activity of the resolved compounds is manifested by their CD spectra showing relatively strong Cotton effects in the region of thionoamide and selenoamide n-pi* transition. The optically active thiono- and selenoamides are configurationally labile compounds and gradually racemize in solution but they are stable in the form of the inclusion complexes. The first-order kinetics of the racemization in solution allowed us to assign the racemization barriers by the spectropolarimetric measurements

  • High Frequency Harmonics Emission in Smart Grids
    • Jarosław Łuszcz
    2013

Pulse-width modulated rectifiers are nowadays commonly used for AC to DC power conversion. PWM rectification technology is very effective and allows for bidirectional power flow with the possibility of power factor improvement and low-order harmonic emission limitation. Unfortunately, employed PWM boost topology results with generation of input current harmonic distortions in a frequency range tightly correlated to modulation frequency. PWM carrier frequency and its harmonic components in typical applications are usually located in frequency range from single kHz up to hundreds of kHz. Increase of harmonic emission in this particular frequency range can be disturbing for other sensitive systems, therefore can cause lack of electromagnetic compatibility. Interferences in low frequency range are increasingly frequent EMC issue because of extensive use of low power PWM rectifiers and significant increase of rated power of individual converters, which already reach several MW. Presented comparison of current harmonic emission spectra of PWM rectifiers with relation to classic diode rectifiers is focused on frequency range of 2 to 9 kHz, for which emission limitation rules are currently under development. New class of EMC problems arising in low frequency range in power system are underlined as a result of increased harmonic emission in frequency range of 2 to 9 kHz..

  • High Frequency Harmonics Emission of Modern Power Electronic AC-DC Converters
    • Jarosław Łuszcz
    2013

Modern AC/DC converters with bidirectional power flow employing PWM boost topology generate harmonic distortions of input current in relatively high frequency range tightly related to modulation carrier frequency. These frequencies and its multiples in typical applications are usually located in frequency range from single up to several of kHz. Increased harmonic emission in this frequency range can easily and harmfully influence sensitive control and measurement systems what occurs more often nowadays in applications where high power AC/DC PWM boost converted are used. This paper presents a comparison of current harmonic emission of PWM boost rectifiers with relation to classic diode rectifiers. New class of electromagnetic compatibility problems arising in power system are underlined as a result of increased harmonic distortions emission in frequency range up to 9 kHz.

    • Witold Zakrzewski
    2013

This paper presents innovative thermodynamiccycles with high-efficient, zero-emission energy production. The main aim of this work is to show the role of nano-phenomena in the enhancement of the power of thermodynamic cycles. For that purpose, the cycles using oxy-combustion and spray ejected condensation are first studied and, secondly hybrid cycles using fuel cells and gas turbines are presented. The role of nano-phenomena in such devices is also discussed.

  • HILS for the Design of Three-Wheeled Mobile Platform Motion Surveillance System with a Use of Energy Performance Index
    • Krzysztof Jan Kaliński
    • Cezary Buchholz
    2013 Solid State Phenomena

Current tendency in mechatronic design requires the use of comprehensive development of an environment, which gives the possibility to prototype, design, simulate and integrate with dedicated hardware. The paper discusses the Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulations (HILS) mechatronic technique, used during the design of the surveillance system based on energy performance index. The presented test configuration (physical controller – emulated virtual research object) allows authors to verify responses (in the LabVIEW) of the mobile platform model, to the optimal control commands (torques), generated by the Real Time controller. Defined energy performance index, supported by the correction velocities, controls the emulated platform while moving along three different trajectories. The demonstrated test results are compared with desired values obtained during numerical computation process of kinematic and dynamic equations of the presented model. The author’s investigation of the HILS affected final optimisation of the motion surveillance system design. Real time requirements enforced authors to decrease sampling time of control command (signal generation frequency) and establish high performance execution strategy for on-line algorithm (algorithm execution performed both in Real Time processor and in the FPGA - Field Programmable Gate Array). The performed simulations confirmed that the HILS is a powerful technique, which improves system design making that more efficient and low cost consuming.

The LYS12 gene from Candida albicans, coding for homoisocitrate dehydrogenase was cloned and expressed as a His-tagged protein in Escherichia coli. The purified gene product catalyzes the Mg2+- and K+-dependent oxidative decarboxylation of homoisocitrate to alpha-ketoadipate. The recombinant enzyme demonstrates strict specificity for homoisocitrate. SDS-PAGE of CaHIcDH revealed its molecular mass of 42.6±1 kDa, while in size-exclusion chromatography the enzyme eluted in a single peak corresponding to a molecular mass of 158+/-3 kDa. Native electrophoresis showed that CaHIcDH may exist as a monomer and as a tetramer and the latter form is favored by homoisocitrate binding. CaHIcDH is an hysteretic enzyme. The KM values of the purified His-tagged enzyme for NAD+ and homoisocitrate were 1.09 mM and 73.7 microM, respectively and kcat was 0.38 s-1. Kinetic parameters determined for the wild type CaHIcDH were very similar. The enzyme activity was inhibited by (2R,3S)-3-(p-carboxybenzyl)malate (CBMA), with IC50 = 3.78 mM. CBMA demonstrated some moderate antifungal activity in minimal media that could be enhanced upon conversion of the enzyme inhibitor into its trimethyl ester derivative (TMCBMA). TMCBMA is the first reported antifungal for which an enzyme of the AAP was identified as a molecular target.

  • How to adapt Lean Six Sigma to improve performance of SMEs of manufacturing sector
    • Piotr Grudowski
    • Ewa Zajkowska
    2013

The main objective of the paper is to present the utilitarian effect of the adaptation of the Lean Six Sigma concept and its implementation in the small and medium-sized enterprises of the manufacturing sector. The original methodology was developed on the basis of research carried out in the Polish and French enterprises from 2009 to 2011. In the case of SMEs, the use of the concept of Lean Six Sigma is much less common, as evidenced by the scarce literature on the subject. Analysis of the cases of implementation of Lean Six Sigma in the SMEs of the manufacturing sector reveals the common barriers faced by these companies using this concept. This paper presents a framework of the methodology proposed as well as a case study of its application in the SMEs sector.

  • Human factors in nuclear power engineering in Polish conditions
    • Agnieszka Kaczmarek-Kacprzak
    • Martin Catlow
2013 Full text Zeszyty Naukowe Wydziału Elektrotechniki i Automatyki Politechniki Gdańskiej

The paper “Human factors in nuclear power engineering in polish conditions” focuses on analysis of dynamics of preparing polish society to build first nuclear power plant in XXI century in Poland. Authors compare experience from constructing nuclear power plant Sizewell B (Great Britain) and Sizewell C, which is in preparation phase with polish nuclear power program. Paper includes aspects e.g. of creating nuclear safety culture and social opinion about investment. Human factors in nuclear power engineering are as well important as relevant economical and technical factors, but very often negligible. In Poland where history about Czarnobyl is still alive, and social opinion is created on emotions after accident in Fukushima, human factors are crucial and should be under comprehensive consideration.

A series of compounds containing either non-proteinogenic beta-/gamma-amino acids or N-substituted beta-alanine residues (beta-peptoid units) in P-1 specificity position were synthesized based on the structure of sunflower trypsin inhibitor 1 (SFTI-1). The compounds were synthesized on a solid support; the N-substituted beta-alanines (beta Nhlys and beta Nhphe) were introduced into a peptidomimetic chain via a two-step approach using acryloyl chloride and an appropriate primary amine. The inhibitory activities were characterized in vitro against bovine alpha-chymotrypsin or bovine beta-trypsin. Three analogues displayed activity comparable to fully proteinogenic counterparts-monocyclic SFTI-1 and [Phe(5)] SFTI-1. Moreover, all active peptidomimetics were resistant toward proteolytic degradation, even after 24-h incubation at room temperature. (C) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

  • Hybrid Approach to Networked Control System
    • Grzegorz Ewald
    • Mieczysław Brdyś
    2013

Effcient control of Networked Control System (NCS) is a challenge, as the control methods need to deal with non-deterministic variable delays and data loss. This paper presents a novel hybrid approach to NCS where Model Predictive Control (MPC) is applied as a main controller and implicit switching MPC is used for data transmission control in event-driven shared communication medium, leading to complex control system with active data transmission mechanisms.
