    2018 ELECTROCHIMICA ACTA

In this work, the potentiostatic electropolymerization of polypyrrole (PPy) on iron in aqueous solution of sodium salicylate and pyrrole is studied in situ by odd random phase electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ORP-EIS). The influence of the pyrrole concentration on the electrosynthesis process is investigated. The ORP-EIS technique ensures a reliable analysis of the PPy electrosynthesis on iron by means of an advanced data analysis of the non-linear and non-stationary behaviour and the signal-to-noise ratio of the system. Additionally, the structure and the chemical nature of the PPy film on iron are studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES). The results of the characterization confirm the presence of the passivation layer at the PPy/iron interface formed prior to the polymer deposition. The modelling of the impedance evolution over time provides the quantitative analysis of the electropolymerization of PPy on iron. The results show that the electrosynthesis of pyrrole on oxidizable iron in the presence of sodium salicylate is a complex process, which includes not only the pyrrole oxidation reactions but also reactions such as the oxidation/reduction of the iron surface and/or reactions between the iron, formed interlayer and polypyrrole.

  • Instrument detection and pose estimation with rigid part mixtures model in video-assisted surgeries

    2018 MEDICAL IMAGE ANALYSIS

Localizing instrument parts in video-assisted surgeries is an attractive and open computer vision problem. A working algorithm would immediately find applications in computer-aided interventions in the operating theater. Knowing the location of tool parts could help virtually augment visual faculty of surgeons, assess skills of novice surgeons, and increase autonomy of surgical robots. A surgical tool varies in appearance due to articulation, viewpoint changes, and noise. We introduce a new method for detection and pose estimation of multiple non-rigid and robotic tools in surgical videos. The method uses a rigidly structured, bipartite model of end-effector and shaft parts that consistently encode diverse, pose-specific appearance mixtures of the tool. This rigid part mixtures model then jointly explains the evolving tool structure by switching between mixture components. Rigidly capturing end-effector appearance allows explicit transfer of keypoint meta-data of the detected components for full 2D pose estimation. The detector can as well delineate precise skeleton of the end-effector by transferring additional keypoints. To this end, we propose effective procedure for learning such rigid mixtures from videos and for pooling the modeled shaft part that undergoes frequent truncation at the border of the imaged scene. Notably, extensive diagnostic experiments inform that feature regularization is a key to fine-tune the model in the presence of inherent appearance bias in videos. Experiments further illustrate that estimation of end-effector pose improves upon including the shaft part in the model. We then evaluate our approach on publicly available datasets of in-vivo sequences of non-rigid tools and demonstrate state-of-the-art results.

    2018

The paper describes an operation principle of odour nuisance monitoring network in a city agglomeration. Moreover, it presents the results of investigation on ambient air quality with respect to odour obtained during six-month period. The investigation was carried out using a network comprised of six prototypes of electronic nose and Nasal Ranger field olfactometers employed as a reference method. The monitoring network consisted of two measurement stations localized in a vicinity of crude oil processing plant and four stations localized near the main emitters of volatile odorous compounds such as sewage treatment plant, municipal landfill, phosphatic fertilizer production plant. The electronic nose prototype was equipped with a set of six semiconductor sensors by FIGARO Co. and one PID-type sensor. The field olfactometers were utilized for determination of mean concentration of odorants and for calibration of the electronic nose prototypes in order to provide their proper operation. Mean monthly values of odour concentration depended on the site of measurement and on meteorological parameters. They were within 0 – 6.0 ou/m3 range. Performed investigations revealed the possibility of electronic nose instrument application as a tool for monitoring of odour nuisance.

2018 Full text JOURNAL OF DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

We investigate leaky integrate-and-fire models (LIF models for short) driven by Stepanov and μ-almost periodic functions. Special attention is paid to the properties of the firing map and its displacement, which give information about the spiking behavior of the considered system. We provide conditions under which such maps are well-defined and are uniformly continuous. We show that the LIF models with Stepanov almost periodic inputs have uniformly almost periodic displacements. We also show that in the case of μ-almost periodic drives it may happen that the displacement map is uniformly continuous, but is not μ-almost periodic (and thus cannot be Stepanov or uniformly almost periodic). By allowing discontinuous inputs, we extend some previous results, showing, for example, that the firing rate for the LIF models with Stepanov almost periodic input exists and is unique. This is a starting point for the investigation of the dynamics of almost-periodically driven integrate-and-fire systems.

When planning their transport policy, cities usually focus on developing sustainable transport systems and reducing the negative consequences of transport. One way to deliver transport policies is to use the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP), a strategic document designed to meet the demand for mobility whilst ensuring adequate quality of life for the residents. The process of Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP process) can be supported by using a transport model. The objective of this article is to analyse the efficacy of the Multilevel Model of Transport Systems—referred to by its acronym, MST—for the SUMP process. With its ability to represent the transport system’s behaviour depending on the level of detail, the MST can significantly benefit the SUMP process. The proposed concept of integration of the MST into the SUMP process has already been tested and applied in delivering Gdynia’s (Poland) SUMP. The paper suggests ways to use the MST at different levels of planning and modelling and describes the outcomes. Using the multilevel structure helps to fully realise the transport model’s potential to improve the effectiveness of urban mobility planning. The conclusions show that the methods proposed in the article are worthwhile and cities should consider them when planning the SUMP process.

    2018 Full text CARBON

We test the potentials available for elemental carbon, with the scope to choose the potential suitable for the modeling of penta-graphene, the latest two dimensional carbon allotrope. By using molecular statics and molecular dynamics simulations we show that there is only one potential e namely the Tersoff-type potential proposed by Erhart and Albe in 2005 e which is able to correctly describe all the important features of penta-graphene. We show that this potential gives structural, mechanical and energetic parameters which are in accordance with the previously reported ab initio results.

    • Katarzyna Kubiszewska
2018 Full text Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

The banking sector is one of the key sectors in every economy, therefore, the issue of stability is one of the main interests not only of researchers but also policy-makers. The stability of the banking sector is especially important during a process of transformation. The aim of this article is to present a new tool for estimating the stability of the banking sector as a whole. Although the tool can be used to estimate the level of stability for all countries, the relationships between the various variables and interdependence of the ratios used in the tool will differ between the countries surveyed, as tested in the article. The study is based on selected countries from two regions: the Western Balkans and the Baltic Sea states that are either in the process of transformation or have just completed the process. Due to the choice of the banking sectors being studied, it was possible to perform a comparative analysis between countries that have already completed the transformation process and those that are currently in the transformation process. The survey is based on quarterly data for the period Q1, 2010 – Q1, 2016. The data has been sourced from the International Monetary Fund.

2018 Full text Operations Research and Decisions

This article presents an analysis of the determinants of a firm’s innovativeness deriving from its internal potential and characteristics. The analysis is based on research carried out on 1355 firms that applied for public subsidies from the Innovative Economy Operational Program in 2014. The methods applied are logit regression, comparative analysis and literature review. The analysis is structured ac- cording to Bielski’s model of an organization indicating the following subsystems: management, goals and values, people, technology and structure. This analysis shows that firms’ innovativeness depends mainly on the following factors: their level of cooperation with academia, longer presence on the mar- ket, being highly equipped with modern technologies, being a medium-sized or large firm, as well as being an industrial rather than a service firm. All of the organizational subsystems play a role in deter- mining innovativeness, but the most important ones are the technical subsystem, psycho-social subsys- tem and the subsystem of structure.
