  • MARKETING STRATEGY - SPACE AS A PRODUCT.ARCHITECTURE AS A MARKETING DEVICE.
    • Ksenia Piątkowska
    2012

Space has its measurable financial value. From the economic point of view place can be treated as a product that fights for appearing in tourists' and investors' consciousnesses. Space - treated as the object of demand and supply - becomes an element in a marketing game. To reach its maximal value the given space should be competitive to other spaces, from which it wants to stand out. However, in the field of architecture - and in the social structure alike - the globalization leads to a blending of economies and cultures that produces uniformly branded public space conforming to universal assumptions of integration and correlation. Space/place, to be an economic value, can not be subject to incidental shaping. The architecture should be one of the marketing devices. Therefore the architecture is not only the reflection of the current state but it becomes an instrument in creating yet non-existent - but anticipated - economic potential of place.

  • Mass Spectrometric Identification of 13C-labeled Metabolites During anaerobic Propanoic Acid Oxidation
    • Monika Felchner-Żwirełło
    • Josef Winter
    • Claudia Gallert
    2012 CHEMISTRY & BIODIVERSITY

Biowaste digestion is a possibility to gain biogas as a renewable fuel source. However, the anaerobic food chain may be disrupted by, e.g., substrate overload or by inhibitors, leading to the accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), predominantly of propanoic acid (PA). VFA Accumulation may cause a rapid pH decrease, less biogas production, or even a total inhibition. To maintain high biogas productivity or to prevent a collapse of methanogenesis, metabolic properties of the degrading microorganisms must be elucidated, e.g., by investigation of the established pathways for degradation of VFAs. A Dani 3950 headspace system (HS), a Varian 431 gas chromatograph (GC), and a Varian 210 mass spectrometer (MS) have been combined to quantify and specifically identify metabolites of PA oxidation. The use of [1-(13)C]-labeled PA as a carbon source for microorganisms allows differentiation between the methyl-malonyl-CoA or the C(6)-dismutation pathway, both resulting in AcOH production. Appearance of the (13)C-moiety either in the COO or Me group of AcO can easily be detected by MS. The methyl-malonyl-CoA pathway was successfully identified as the only pathway of PA degradation by organisms in a lab-scale anaerobic digester. A similar approach can be applied to any degradation pathway involving VFAs.

  • Matching Exception Class Hierarchies between .NET, Java Environments
    • Julian Szymański
    • Paweł Kaczmarek
    2012

The paper presents a methodology of exception classification and matching exception messages between .NET andJava environments. The methodology operates on existing exception class hierarchies and proposes two complementingapproaches: automated and manual matching. The automated matching uses the similarity measure to find associationsbetween exception messages from the two sets of classes for the considered programming languages. The manualmatching uses a systematic classification of exceptions based on packages and their application areas. Both accurateand approximate exception matching is considered. The methodology improves integration of heterogeneous softwarecomponent, which covers both development time, in case of code migration and interface design, and runtime operation,in case of exceptions signaled from a cooperating system. Using the methodology, we performed experimental studieson existing exception class hierarchies. The experiments have showed that the majority of exceptions do not have theircorresponding counterpart. In some cases, both environments supply matching exception classes for handling commonfaults in software systems.

  • Material Flow Analysis in a cooked mussel processing industry
    • Pastora Ma. Bello Bugallo
    • Anna Stupak
    • Laura Cristóbal Andrade
    • Rosa Torres López
    2012 JOURNAL OF FOOD ENGINEERING

Galicia (NW Spain) is an ideal environment for mussel culture owing to its excellent natural conditions. It is the first Spanish and European mussel producer and the second worldwide after China. More than 50% of the mussel collected in Galicia is used in the processing industry, which produces different products, as cooked mussel that is canned, frozen or used in the food industry. In this paper a methodology based on Life Cycle Thinking has been applied to a mussel processing plant. The methodology combines Material and Energy Flow Analysis (MEFA) and BAT (Best Available Techniques) Analysis to detect the Improvable Flows (IF) of the process and to propose techniques that enhance the process. The results obtained after the application of the methodology will be used to improve the performance of the plant. It will also be considered the suitability of the methodology for being applied to other plants of the sector.

  • Materials Design for the Titanium Scaffold Based Implant
    • Andrzej Zieliński
    • Sylwia Sobieszczyk
    • Waldemar Serbiński
    • Tomasz Seramak
    • Agnieszka Ossowska
    2012 Solid State Phenomena

The main objective of here presented research is a design the scaffold/porous titanium(Ti) alloy based composite material demonstrating better biocompatibility, longer lifetime andbioactivity behaviour for load-bearing implants. The development of such material is proposed bymaking a number of consecutive tasks. Modelling the mechanical, biomechanical and biologicalbehavior of porous titanium structure and an elaboration of results is performed by mathematicalmethods, including FEM and fuzzy logic. The development of selected Ti-13Zr-Nb alloy withdesigned porosity and no harmful effects is made by powder metallurgy (PM) with and withoutspace holders, and by rapid prototyping with an use of selective laser melting (SLM). Thedevelopment of an oxidation technology resulting in high corrosion resistance and bioactivity iscarried out by electrochemical oxidation, gaseous oxidation and chemical oxidation, and theircombination. The HA depositon is made by electrochemical and chemical (alternate immersion)methods. The core material is designed as a combination of natural polymer and bioceramics inorder to allow slow dissolution followed by stepwise growth of bone tissue and angiogenesis, preventing local inflammation processes, and sustaining the mechanical strength close to that ofnon-porous material.
