    2016 Key Engineering Materials

The present study aims to determine the effectiveness of a nonlinear mathematical model in simulating complex mechanical behaviour of a seismic isolation system to protect structures during strong and damaging earthquakes. In order to construct the Polymeric Bearings considered in this research, a specially prepared flexible polyurethane elastomer with increased damping properties has been used. The usefulness of the proposed mathematical model has been verified by comparing the dynamic response of a base-isolated single-storey structure model under various seismic excitations with the results obtained from the detailed numerical analyses where the previously examined experimental model has been considered as a multi-degree-of-freedom system. The results obtained from the numerical investigation using lumped-mass models have confirmed that the proposed nonlinear mathematical model can be successfully used to simulate the complex mechanical behaviour of the Polymeric Bearings in numerical analyses.

The overhead contact line (OCL) is the most effective way for supplying railway electric vehicles. The increase of the speed of the vehicles increases power consumption and requires ensuring proper cooperation of pantographs with OCL. The paper describes the novel mathematical model of the OCL system and the simulation results. The primary objective is a more accurate analysis to increase the reliability of the evaluation of monitoring and diagnostics. The model was based on the Lagrange energy method. The paper presents the structure of the model and equations describing it, as well as the results of some laboratory tests that were performed to determine the model parameters. The selected results of simulations concerning the effects of force impact on the contact wire were carried out using the created model. The prepared program can be used for creating computer tools, which will support designers of OCL.

    2016

Statistics of bearing failures in induction motors indicate, that they constitute more than 40% of IM damage, therefore bearing diagnosis is very important. Vibration methods for bearing diagnostics have one major disadvantage - they require the availability of the machine for sensors installation. This is the reason for seeking new methods based on motor supply current analysis. Diagnosis of induction motors, conducted remotely by measuring and analyzing the supply current is attractive with the lack of free access to the engine. So far, there is no solution based on analysis of current, the credibility of which allows use in industry. The article provides an overview of selected methods of diagnosis of induction motor bearings, based on measurement of the supply current. The problem here is the high disturbance components level of the motor current in relation to diagnostic components. The paper presents the new approach to signal analysis solutions, based on statistical methods, which have been adapted to be used by this diagnostic system. First experimental results with the use of this method confirm the advantages of the presented method.

  • Measuring Consumers' Engagement With Brand-Related Social-Media Content. Development and Validation of a Scale that Identifies Levels of Social-Media Engagement with Brands
    • Bruno Schivinski
    • George Christodoulides
    • Dariusz Dąbrowski
    2016 JOURNAL OF ADVERTISING RESEARCH

The purpose of the current study was to develop a scale to measure the consumer's engagement with brand-related social-media content, based on three dimensions established in the framework of an earlier theoretical construct, “Consumer's Online Brand-Related Activities” (Muntinga, Moorman, and Smit, 2011). Qualitative techniques were used to generate an initial pool of items that captured different levels of consumer engagement with consumption, contribution, and creation of brand-related social-media content. Quantitative data from a survey of 2,252 consumers across Poland then was collected in two phases to calibrate and validate the ensuing scale, measuring participants' engagement, with nearly 300 brands spanning a range of industries. Results confirmed the structure and psychometric properties of the scale.

Meat constitutes an important component of human diet. In order to ensure that it is safe to consume, it is important to be able to determine whether a particular sample is fresh. To this end, an analysis of the headspace of pork, beef, and poultrywas performed over a period of seven days using ultra-fast gas chromatography. Compounds that may possibly be used as indicators of spoilage were identified. Based on the obtained results it was concluded, that it is possible to distinguish between particular meat samples based on the day of analysis, as well as differentiate between different kinds of meat.

  • Mechanical behaviour of knit synthetic mesh used in hernia surgery
    • Agnieszka Tomaszewska
2016 Full text Acta of Bioengineering and Biomechanics

Purpose: There is a discussion in literature concerning mechanical properties and modelling of surgical meshes. An important feature of elastic modulus dependency on load history is taken into account in this paper, as implants are subjected to variable loading during human activity. The example of DynaMesh®-IPOM surgical implant is studied. Methods: The analysis is based on failure tension tests and cyclic loading and unloading tests performed for the material samples. Stiffness changes of the material samples within successive load cycles are noted. The values the elastic modulus of the material tend to during successive cycles determine the material stiffness in the preconditioned state. The analysis is performed for two axes of the mesh, as the material reveals orthotropic properties. Results: For the initial displacements state of the material bilinear stiffness functions are determined for the two considered material axes. The functions for the preconditioned state are specified basing in the observed stiffness changes in subsequent loading cycles in experiments with different load (and strain) ranges. The identified elastic modulus values for different strain levels in the preconditioned state are then a basis for the nonlinear stiffness function formulation. Conclusions: The author concludes that two states of the considered mesh should be considered in calculations, initial and preconditioned ones. As the material stiffness in its preconditioned state is higher than in the initial one, omitting of the preconditioned state in calculation, e.g., considering fixation of the mesh, may lead to underestimation of necessary fixation strength.

  • Mechanical characterization of a gravel column in a calibration chamber operating as a triaxial cell
    • Lech Bałachowski
    2016

A series of tests considering the behavior of gravel columns was performed. A segment of column with a height of 1 m and a diameter of 0.53 m was modelled in a calibration chamber used as a triaxial cell at three different lateral stress applied. The vertical load transferred on the column head was simulated with steady increase of water pressures in the upper and lower membranes. During the loading the volumetric changes in the column material were measured. The influence of lateral membrane rigidity and the effect of encapsulated column were analyzed. The strength and deformation parameters of gravel material determined in the calibration chamber operating as a triaxial cell are discussed.

  • Mechanical properties of mosquito nets in the context of hernia repair
    • Andrzej Ambroziak
    • Katarzyna Szepietowska
    • Izabela Lubowiecka
2016 Full text COMPUTER METHODS IN BIOMECHANICS AND BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

The paper deals with issue of applying mosquito nets as implants in hernia repair, which have already been used in resource-poor developing countries. Uniaxial tensile tests have been conducted on polyester mosquito meshes in two orthogonal directions. Non-linear elastic constitutive laws parameters have been identified to be applied in dense net material models. Mechanical performance of tested mosquito nets has been compared with properties of commercial implants used in treatment of hernia and with properties of human tissue. This study contributes to mechanical knowledge of hernia repair issue by investigation of cheaper alternative to commercial implants.

  • Mechanism-based inactivation of human cytochrome P450 1A2 and 3A4 isoenzymes by antitumor triazoloacridinone C-1305.

    2016 Full text XENOBIOTICA

5-Dimethylaminopropylamino-8-hydroxytriazoloacridinone, C-1305, is a promising antitumor therapeutic agent with high activity against several experimental tumors. It was determined to be a potent and selective inhibitor of liver microsomal and human recombinant cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2 and 3A4 isoenzymes. Therefore, C-1305 might modulate the effectiveness of other drugs used in multidrug therapy. The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism of the observed C-1305- mediated inactivation of CYP1A2 and CYP3A4. Our findings indicated that C-1305 produced a time- and concentration-dependent decrease in 7-ethoxycoumarin O-deethylation (CYP1A2, KI = 10.8 ± 2.14 mM) and testosterone 6bhydroxylation (CYP3A4, KI = 9.1 ± 2.82 mM). The inactivation required the presence of NADPH, was unaffected by a nucleophilic trapping agent (glutathione) and a reactive oxygen species scavenger (catalase), attenuated by a CYP-specific substrate (7-ethoxycoumarin or testosterone), and was not reversed by potassium ferricyanide. The estimated partition ratios of 1086 and 197 were calculated for the inactivation of CYP1A2 and CYP3A4, respectively. In conclusion, C-1305 inhibited human recombinant CYP1A2 and CYP3A4 isoenzymes by mechanism-based inactivation. The obtained knowledge about specific interactions between C-1305 and/or its metabolites, and CYP isoforms would be useful for predicting the possible drug–drug interactions in potent multidrug therapy.

  • Mechatronic Design Towards Investigation of the Temporo-Mandibular Joint Behaviour
    • Creuillot Victor
    • Dreistadt Cynthia
    • Krzysztof Jan Kaliński
    • Lipinski Paul
    2016

A significant problem of the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) research is lack of data concerning geometry and position of TMJ discs. It leads to necessity of developing a driving method of the process optimization, which is based on chosen techniques of mechatronic design. In particular, the latter concerns a technique of experimentally supported virtual prototyping. On this stage, the research is characterized by well-verified constitutive characteristics of all components, engagement of real components of the research system, offline experimental identification of the TMJ system parameters, offline experimental determination of the appropriate parameters of the TMJ, online computation of the TMJ process of non-stationary model and assessment of the driving method’s efficiency. In case of the medium opening–closing jaw motion, results of the FEM are close to the experimental data and validate discs’ geometries and positions. Quality of the obtained solution is also verified by analysing the contact between discs and surrounding bones. In case of the immediate clenching simulation, a comparison of finite element model simulation and dental plaster mould occlusions testifies the correctly reproduced occlusal scheme. Values of the contact forces and the contact area surfaces enable calculation of the mean contact pressure values on the cranial and caudal faces of the discs. The obtained model allowed reproducing accurate anatomic mandible trajectories and also a physical occlusion.
