2018 Full text Acta Crystallographica Section C-Structural Chemistry

Two products of the reactions of CuI with 1-benzoyl-3-(4-bromophenyl)thiourea and with 1-benzoyl-3-(2-iodophenyl)thiourea have been obtained and characterized, namely poly[[[1-benzoyl-3-(4-bromophenyl)thiourea-κS]-µ3-iodidocopper(I)] acetone hemisolvate], {[CuI(C₁₄H₁₁BrN₂OS)]‧0.5C₃H₆O}ₙ, and poly-[µ₄-iodido-µ₃-iodido-[N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)benzamide-κN]dicopper(I)], [Cu₂I₂(C₁₄H₁₀N₂OS)]ₙ. Their structures, determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, exhibit different stoichiometries and molecular organizations; however, both compounds are polymeric and possess close Cu‧‧‧Cu contacts. The first product contains a (CuI)ₙ double chain supported by the thiourea derivative coordinated via the S atom. In the second case, the ligand undergoes dehalogenation and cyclization to form N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)benzamide that serves as the N-donor ligand which is connected to both sides of a (CuI)ₙ quadruple chain. In both hybrid inorganic chains, I atoms bridge three or four Cu atoms. The coordination centres adopt more or less distorted tetrahedral geometries. The structures of the (CuI)ₙ kernels of the ribbons are similar to fragments of the layers in high-pressure phase V copper(I) iodide. Only weak S‧‧‧O, C—H‧‧‧O, C—H‧‧‧I and π–π interactions hold the ribbons together, allowing the formation of crystals.

    2018 POLYHEDRON

Four new complexes of copper(II) consisting of two different chromone derivatives with carbonyl and amine donor atoms: 7-aminoflavone (L1) and 7-amino-2-methylchromone (L2), were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, UV–Vis, FT-IR, EPR spectroscopy, MS and elemental analysis. In all four compounds, the chromone derivatives were found to act as monodentate O- or N-ligands. The structural characteristics of 1a and 2a complexes were elucidated from EPR measurements. where their g-tensor components were compared to those observed for 1b and 2b, the structures of which were determined by X-ray diffraction method. DFT calculations were performed to estimate the most favored mode of coordination, whereas comparative Hirshfeld surface studies were used to characterize intermolecular interactions in the studied complexes. Magnetic interactions of 1a and 2a were also analyzed.

    2018

Purpose: The view on CSR concept is constantly broadening and still the new perspective is needed. New challenges are imposed by social, environmental and economic changes. A stakeholder approach defining organizations’ responsibility is no more valid. There is a need to redefine CSR concept and its role in sustainable development. Higher education and its role in shaping future attitudes towards corporate social responsibility and sustainable development emerge here. A short Literature overview of development and changes of CSR concept involving higher education institutions’ attitude is presented as well as the results of exploratory analysis based on the research done among students of engineering studies. The aim of this study was determination of the level of awareness and understanding on the subject of CSR of Polish students of technical university. The role of technical university in Poland in shaping future CSR attitudes in the opinion of present students was also determined. The main trends in students’ attitude towards the CSR issues were identified. The expected future trends of development and CSR implementation were indicated. Methodology: The paper is based on survey among 214 students of first and second degree of both full-time and part-time studies of the Faculty of Management and Economics of Gdansk University of Technology, Poland in the period of March – June 2018. A verified in the preliminary examination questionnaire consisting of eighteen questions was addressed the subject of study. It involved nine questions regarding students awareness and the way they perceive the concept of CSR at their university and nine questions about future meaning and importance of CSR in the opinion of students. Most of the questions were closed and two of them were multiple-choice questions. In all questions regarding the opinion of the respondents on the given topic the five-point Likert scale was used.

2018 Full text PHYSICAL REVIEW B

We report a study on the evolution of a charge density wave and antiferromagnetism in the series of the polycrystalline solid solution Nd1−xGdxNiC2 (0 _ x _ 1) by means of magnetic and transport properties measurements. The experimental results reveal the violation of the de Gennes law and a strong correlation between the Peierls, Néel, and Curie-Weiss temperatures, which strongly suggests a cooperative interaction between the charge density wave state and antiferromagnetism due to Fermi surface nesting enhancement of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction. We also find that the obtained results for the Nd1−xGdxNiC2 (0 _ x _ 1) series overlap with the TCDW trend line in the phase diagram for RNiC2 family.

  • Correlation between chemical composition and the presence of selected groups of bacteria in freshwater samples collected from Isfjorden and Billefjorde

    2018

The average concentrations of pollutants in the arctic water, snow and the atmosphere are much lower than those observed in the temperate climate. Specific conditions occurring in the polar regions have apotential to accumulate the pollutants transported from other parts of the world. In this study, attempts were made to find a correlation between selected chemical components and the bacterial population. The analysis involved 11 samples of water collected from rivers and streams flowing into Isfjorden and Billefjorde in summer 2017 (Spitsbergen, Svalbard). Water samples were analysed in order to determine the concentration of various substances such as PAHs, metals, main cations, and anions. Additionally, parameters such as pH, SEC, TOC, number, average size and biomass of bacterioplankton were also measured. On the basis of the obtained results, it was impossible to determine the relationship between the measured substances and the bacterial community.

2018 CRITICAL REVIEWS IN FOOD SCIENCE AND NUTRITION

During the last decade, there has been a growing interest in understanding food's digestive fate in order to strengthen the possible effects of food on human health. Ideally, food digestion should be studied in vivo on humans but this is not always ethically and financially possible. Therefore, simple in vitro digestion models mimicking the gastrointestinal tract have been proposed as alternatives to in vivo experiments. Thus, it is no surprise that these models are increasingly used by the scientific community, although their various limitations to fully mirror the complexity of the digestive tract. Therefore, the objective of this article was to call upon the collective experiences of scientists involved in Infogest (an international network on food digestion) to review and reflect on the applications of in vitro digestion models, the parameters assessed in such studies and the physiological relevance of the data generated when compared to in vivo data. The authors provide a comprehensive review in vitro and in vivo digestion studies investigating the digestion of macronutrients (i.e., proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates) as well as studies of the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of micronutrients and phytochemicals. The main conclusion is that evidences show that despite the simplicity of in vitro models they are often very useful in predicting outcomes of the digestion in vivo. However, this has relies on the complexity of in vitro models and their tuning toward answering specific questions related to human digestion physiology, which leaves a vast room for future studies and improvements.

  • Correlation between natural frequencies and buckling load in a stiffened shell
    • Łukasz Żmuda-Trzebiatowski
    • Piotr Iwicki
    2018

The paper deals with correlation between natural frequencies and buckling load of a stiffened shell composed of corrugated sheets and vertical stiffeners (columns). The simplified shell segment represents the buckling behaviour of a whole silo with sparsely distributed columns. The paper covers variants of linear buckling anal-yses, dynamic eigenvalue analyses and geometrically non-linear analyses of a segment modelled with shell el-ements. Compressive stresses resulting from the applied loads made the natural frequencies vary, tending to zero while axial forces reach the buckling loads. The relationship between squares of natural frequencies and buckling loads is linear at small load magnitudes, non-linear for higher load magnitudes. The Vibration Corre-lation Technique (VCT) can be used in the case of existing structures in order to determine buckling load or the degree of bearing capacity of the structure.

The paper presents the results of a study of parameters used for determining the amount of organic pollutants in wastewater flowing into a collective wastewater treatment plant with a population equivalent of about 120 000 PE. The plant constituted part of a sewage system. Assays were performed for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (CODCr), permanganete index (CODMn) and total organic carbon (TOC). In addition, the pH of wastewater and its alkalinity were determined. Sampling of incoming wastewater and measurement of physicochemical parameters were performed once a week, in the spring. A total of 44 samples of wastewater were collected. The correlations between the individual parameters and the correlations between the ratios of these parameters were determined. It was found that it was possible to estimate, with suffi cient accuracy, the values of selected parameters for determining the concentrations of organic compounds in municipal wastewater, knowing the values of other parameters in this group. Moreover, it was shown that, knowing the relationship between the analyzed parameters, one can find multiple regression equations for a given type of wastewater, which allow one to calculate the remaining relationships with a good fit, i.e. a determination factor R2greater than 0.6

  • Counting and tracking vehicles using acoustic vector sensors
    • Józef Kotus
    • Andrzej Czyżewski
2018 Journal of the Acoustical Society of America

A method is presented for counting vehicles and for determining their movement direction by means of acoustic vector sensor application. The assumptions of the method employing spatial distribution of sound intensity determined with the help of an integrated 3D intensity probe are discussed. The intensity probe developed by the authors was used for the experiments. The mode of operation of the algorithm is presented in conjunction with noise characteristics produced by moving vehicles. The optimization of the algorithm is based on measurements of intensity of sound emitted by the vehicle under controlled conditions. A test setup was built for this purpose with the use of measuring devices installed along a road with varying traffic flow. Reference data on the number of vehicles and traffic directions were prepared employing a recorded video and a reference traffic analyzer operating in lidar technology. It is shown that the developed acoustic method may contribute to an increase of effectiveness of commonly used vehicle counting systems employing inductive loops or Doppler radars.

  • Creating Hotel Services from a Perspective of Extraordinary Customer Experience
    • Edyta Gołąb-Andrzejak
    • Marcin Gębarowski
    2018 Full text Handel Wewnętrzny

This conceptual article aims to explore the process of providing hotel services in the context of requirements arising from the experience economy. Both the concept of experience marketing and the concept of customer experience management provided a theoretical framework for the discussion. Based on a review of literature and conclusions derived from hotel managers’ experiences, a research model is proposed, which may be of some importance for researchers, as it may serve as a basis for future studies relating to hotel services. On the other hand, as far as practitioners are concerned, this model may be a starting point for developing a range of hotel services that stand out in the market and fully meet the expectation of contemporary customers, who are orientated towards extraordinary experience. The developed model demonstrates that hotel services consist of many so-called touch points where experiences should be examined, and each of these moments of contact with the brand should be incorporated into an integrated process of hotel guest experience management.

  • CREATIVE PLACEMAKING IN POLAND. CAN ART BECOME AN EFFECTIVE TOOL OF URBAN REGENERATION?!
    • Magdalena Rembeza
    2018

The main aim of the paper is to examine the role of creative placemaking in shaping the urban environment in Polish cities. It also focuses on challenges and obstacles that creative placemaking projects encounter in Polish realities. Creative placemaking is a “micro-development” strategy (Johnson 2009) that focuses on cultural participation, com¬munity engagement and highlights the social role of arts and culture. Artistic interventions provide new perspectives that are not only aesthetic, but also connected with stimulating community involvement and influencing the vitality of space. These processes are also associated with revitalization through creative initiatives that animate places and spark economic development. In Poland, where creative placemaking initiative is a relatively young process, it is important to investigate the basis on which it should be implemented. Methods used in the research are based on multidisciplinary literature studies and analysis of the three case studies of Łodz, Warszawa and Katowice. The main goal of the research is to discuss problems regarding creative placemaking that occur in cities during a transformation phase. The findings of the research show that creative placemaking in Poland can strengthen community identity and the sense of place, as well as help revitalize local economies. Although it is now too soon to measure the long-term impact of creative placemaking in Polish cities, some first outcomes can be observed. In the case studies presented, art has notably become a tool of urban regeneration. Initially treated as an initiator of change – art has now become a main „actor” in the process of change. In this way art has transformed its role from passive to active

In 2015 a connection between the Polish and Lithuanian power systems become fully operational. The connection consists of a 400 kV double circuit transmission line and a back-to-back HVDC substation located on the Lithuanian side. A magnetic couplings between the circuits of the transmission line cause that during power transmission a different values of active power losses are observed in both circuits. This situation may cause a financial settlement problems for transmitted energy between the operators of the connected systems.

  • Cross-layer integration of network mechanisms for increasing efficiency of multimedia session support in IEEE 802.11s environment
    • Krzysztof Gierłowski
    2018 Full text

With an IEEE 802.11 wireless networks operating in Point-to-Multipoint mode being the most popular WLAN access technology employed today, it can be expected that a Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) based on the technology can provide significant advantages for such network systems. The IEEE 802.11s standard amendment provides the comprehensive set of mechanisms required to implement and deploy a WMN utilizing this widely popular technology. With a clear priority being assigned to compatibility with both higher layer protocols and external ISO-OSI layer 2 network systems, it seems that such solution should be an easy to deploy and a robust one. However, due to some design decisions aiming to provide such a compatibility level and to keep the new mechanisms easy to implement, the resulting WMN specification exhibits severe limitation to is robustness and efficiency. The dissertation provides an analysis of these limitations and proposes a numer of cross-layer integration mechanisms intended to remove tchem, making the WMN system a resilient and efficient network access technology, surpassing in its robustness classic IEEE 802.11 Point-to-Multipoint access systems.

tCross-sections for electron collisions with the 2-methyl-1-buten-3-yne [H2C C(CH3)C CH] moleculewere measured and calculated. Absolute grand-total electron-scattering cross-section (TCS) was takenat impact energies from 0.6 to 300 eV in the linear electron-transmission experiment. The TCS energydependence for the electron–C5H6collision has two prominent enhancements separated with a deepminimum located near 1.8 eV. In addition, in the low-energy TCS function two noteworthy features occur:(i) near 1 eV, a change in a slope on rapidly declining side of the TCS curve; (ii) between 2 and 5 eV, adistinct hump superimposed on the opposite, rising part of the curve. To search for the origin of thesefeatures in the TCS curve for C5H6, the comparison was made with results of the electron-scatteringstudies for selected hydrocarbon molecules. These features were attributed to the formation of short-living negative ions (resonant states). Elastic (ECS) and ionization (ICS) cross-sections for C5H6and C4H2(1,3-butadiyne) were computed up to 3 keV by means of the additivity rule (AR) approximation and thebinary-encounter-Bethe (BEB) approach, respectively. For the C5H6molecule, the sum ECS + ICS is in goodagreement with the experimental TCS for energies above about 40 eV.

Two new crystal structures of eight- and ten-membered cyclic bisanisylphosphonothioyl disulfanes, namely 2,5-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,6,3,4,25,55- dioxadithiadiphosphocane-2,5-dithione, C16H18O4P2S4, and 2,5-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,6,3,4,25,55-dioxadithiadiphosphecane-2,5-dithione, C18H22O4P2S4, have been determined and compared to structures of the ferrocenyl analogues. The eight-membered rings have similar conformations (TBC) but the tenmembered macrocycles are differently puckered. Structural parameters of the relevant SPSSPS motif have been analysed and are discussed in detail. Compound 1 was refined as an inversion twin and 2 was refined as a two component rotational twin.

Investigation of crystallization behavior and kinetics of thermoplastic elastomer nanocomposites was the subject of limited works because of complexities associated with semiexperimental modeling of such phenomenon in a system containing components having completely different behavior in the molten state. Nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of dynamically vulcanized PA6/NBR/HNTs thermoplastic elastomer nanocomposites was mathematically modeled applying well‐known Avrami, Ozawa, and Mo theoretical models to the differential scanning calorimetry data gathered at various cooling rates. It was found that HNTs contribute as nucleating agents to the crystallization kinetics and cause acceleration of crystallization. Activation energy of the crystallization was calculated by correlating the crystallization peak temperature with the cooling rate using Kissinger model. It was found that Mo equation could properly describe nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of the PA6/NBR/HNTs thermoplastic elastomer nanocomposites. This was recognized from the obtained parameters of Mo equation in terms of HNTs loading level, which suggested a higher rate for dynamic crystallization.

    2018 PROGRESS IN ORGANIC COATINGS

In this study, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized (B-MNP) and then modified with SiO2 to form Fe3O4/SiO2 core/shell MNPs. The Fe3O4/SiO2 MNPs were chemically functionalized with chitosan so as to gain Fe3O4/SiO2/Chitosan (CH-MNP). The CH-MNP was functionalized with a macromolecule containing imide and phenylalanine precursors to gain Fe3O4/SiO2/Chitosan/imide/phenylalanine based MNPs (CH-IM-MNP). The differences in chemical structures of the synthesized MNPs were quantified by FTIR and TGA analyses, where grafting ratios of ca. 6 and 28% were calculated for CH-MNP and CH-IM-MNP nanoparticles, respectively. Nanocomposites were prepared by addition of very low (0.1 wt.% nanoparticle based on 100 parts by weight of epoxy) to epoxy/amine systems. Curing behavior of the blank and MNPs-incorporated nanocomposites were studied by nonisothermal DSC analyses varying heating rate, which allowed for giving useful insights into the effect of chemical surface functionalization of MNPs on the curing potential/behavior of epoxy/amine systems. Analysis of fracture surface of the blank and MNPs-incorporated systems using SEM micrographs revealed a very high potential of cure when CH-IM-MNP added to epoxy/amine formulation.
