  • The possible unreliability of self-efficacy beliefs and perceived control - when nascent entrepreneurs may be overconfident
    • Paweł Ziemiański
    2012

  • The Potential of Greed for Independence
    • Piotr Borowiecki
    • Frank Goering
    • Jochen Harant
    • Dieter Rautenbach
    2012 JOURNAL OF GRAPH THEORY

The well-known lower bound on the independence number of a graph due to Caro and Wei can be established as a performance guarantee of two natural and simple greedy algorithms or of a simple randomized algorithm. We study possible generalizations and improvements of these approaches using vertex weights and discuss conditions on so-called potential functions p(G) : V(G) -> N_0 defined on the vertex set of a graph G for which suitably modified versions of the greedy algorithms applied to G yield independent sets I with |I|>=Sum_{uinV(G)} 1/(p(G)+1). We provide examples of such potentials, which lead to bounds improving the bound due to Caro and Wei. Furthermore, suitably adapting the randomized algorithm we give a short proof of Thiele's lower bound on the independence number of a hypergraph.

    • Piotr Konieczka
    • Jacek Namieśnik
2012 JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND HEALTH PART C-ENVIRONMENTAL CARCINOGENESIS & ECOTOXICOLOGY REVIEWS

Selenium occurs in the environment in inorganic and organic compounds. For many years it was regarded as a toxic element, causing numerous illnesses and diseases. But research in the last 50 years has revealed a "bright side" to this element, especially as a component of selenoproteins, selenium makes a significant contribution to the health of humans and animals. The selenium content in an organism depends on its concentration and bioavailability in the soil, and the differences between its deficiency, appropriate intake and excess are very slight. This paper gathers information from the literature on:• the consequences of a deficiency and an excess of selenium in the body, as well as the health-promoting mechanisms of selenium, including the functions of selenoproteins. • the uptake and transformation of selenium compounds by plants, because of the fact, that selenium is better assimilated from plant food, and also the classification of plants with respect to their ability to take up selenium from the soil and to accumulate it.

  • The Role of Greenery and Traffic Calming Measures in Planning of Road Infrastracture
    • Joanna Żukowska
2012 Full text Annals of Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW Horticulture and Landscape Architecture

The role of greenery and traffi c calming measures in road infrastructure planning. The “life” of a town is connected with its infrastructure. So it is that, apart from serving their principal function, motorways, roads, airports and other facilities which make transport possible largely determine contemporary urban design. To achieve balanced forms of urban infrastructure that ensure comfort, safety and spatial order, it is necessary when designing new solutions to adopt a multifaceted approach that combines everything local residents need and maintains harmony with the existing cultural landscape. Development of this kind should be guaranteed by the town’s authorities and infrastructure administrators. It is therefore necessary to coordinate a number of complex undertakings when planning and developing urban space. The coherent and comprehensive implementation of planned road safety improvements should not only reduce the number and seriousness of accidents but should also lead to an improved quality of urban life and living conditions, more effi cient division of urban space, better traffi c fl ow for pedestrians and cyclists, changes in the behaviour of all road users, changes in the structure of the cargoes transported and greater use of safer means of transport. This paper deals with a concept for planning transport infrastructure based on the principle of establishing zones and shared spaces and presents examples of how roads and their environs can be planned in a town.

  • The role of slowly biodegradable organic compounds in a full-scale biological nutrient removal activated sludge systems
    • Jakub Drewnowski
    • Jacek Mąkinia
    2012

The aim of this study was to determine the immediate effects of slowly biodegradable substrates on the denitrification capability and phosphate release/uptake interactions for a full-scale biomass process from two large wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) located in the cities of Gdansk and Gdynia (northern Poland). Since it is hard to distinguish the slowly biodegradable substrate in a direct way, a novel procedure based on batch experiments was developed and implemented. The laboratory experiments were carried out in two parallel, fully automatic batch reactors with the settled wastewater without pretreatment and after coagulation-flocculation with zinc sulfate. The observed specific process rates were comparable at both studied plants and the removal of colloidal and particulate fractions resulted in the reduced rates of denitrification (up to 90%), phosphate release (up to 10%) and phosphate uptake under anoxic and aerobic conditions (over 300%).

This paper introduces an abstract model for tools used in the software engineering process. The main goal of the research is to develop a universal model which allows a description of tools used in the process. The model supports a decision making process and gives an option to choose the best tooling for the situation. The model considers many factors including, but not exclusive to, the company structure, project environment and characteristics, available features. This kind of decision is a long term with a fundamental meaning to the project success and costs and that makes the model especially important. The model is supposed to be a support for decision-makers responsible for selecting adequate solution for software engineering projects. Therefore, it is planned to build knowledge-base system which could store in a formal way whole knowledge regarding this problem area and also would help in its acquisition and processing. The authors described first steps in their research – analysis of the domain from the perspective of knowledge possible to acquire and main problems that can be identified at this early stage.

The aim of this study was to estimate the structure of new polyurethanes with the potential to be used in medicine. Atactic poly[(R,S)-3-hydroxybutyrate], obtained via a ring-opening polymerization, and polycaprolactonediol or polyoxytetramethylenediol were used to built the soft segments. 4,4'-methylene dicyclohexyl diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol were the components to form hard segments. Polyurethanes with low-molecular weight were obtained. The observation of FTIR and 1H-NMR spectra suggested that NH groups form two types of hydrogen bonds: with C[DOUBLE BOND]O urethane (possibly with ester group) and ether groups. An addition of poly[(R,S)-3-hydroxybutyrate] caused the slight increase in number of urethane-urethane hydrogen bonds. For some of polyurethanes (based on polyoxytetramethylenediol) the allophanate structures were present.
