The surface condition of an implant has a significant impact on response occurring at the implant-biosystem border. The knowledge of physical-chemical and biological processes allows for targeted modification of biomaterials to induce a specified response of a tissue. The present research was aimed at development of technology composing of obtaining the nanotube oxide layers on a porous titanium alloy Ti13Nb13Zr, followed by the deposition of phosphate coating. The porous substrate (porosity about 50%) was prepared by a selective laser melting of the Ti13Nb13Zr powder with the SLM Realizer 100 equipment. The nanotubular oxide layers were fabricated by electrochemical oxidation in H3PO4 + 0.3% HF mixture for 30 min. at a constant voltage of 20V. The calcium phosphate coatings were formed by the electrochemically assisted deposition (ECAD). The presence of nanotubular oxide layers with their internal diameters ranging from 30 to 100 nm was observed by SEM (JEOL JSM-7600F). The nanotubes have dimensions that facilitated the deposition of hydroxyapatite

  • Natural convection in symmetrically heated vertical channels
    • Witold Lewandowski
    • Michał Ryms
    • Hubert Denda
2018 Full text INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF THERMAL SCIENCES

The study describes natural convection through a vertical channel, open on four sides and bound by two isothermal walls. Both balancing and infrared experimental investigations were performed in air (Pr = 0.71) to estimate the impact of channel width s and wall-to-ambient temperature difference (tw - t∞) on natural convective heat transfer, the formation of air flow patterns and the rate of flow pattern formation. The study was conducted on two parallel vertical plates of height H = 0.5 m and width B = 0.25 m, with the heated surfaces facing each other, thus creating peripherally open channels of different widths s = 0.045, 0.08, 0.180 and ∞ m. The surface temperature tw, identical for both heating plates, was changed every 10 K and set at tw = 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 °C, while the ambient temperature was maintained within the 18–25 °C range. In the balance method, heat fluxes were determined based on measurements of voltage and electric current supplying the heaters placed inside the walls. In the gradient method, the heat fluxes were calculated from the temperature distribution in air, within a plane perpendicular to the heating plate surfaces. Temperature fields were visualized using a plastic detecting mesh and a thermal imaging camera. The distribution of temperature tx,y, and its gradient at the walls dt/dx|x=0,y were obtained at different heights y along the channels. The gradient values obtained and the results, presented as dependencies of the Nusselt number on the Rayleigh number, indicate that the channel width has a significant impact on heat transfer. Compared to the vertical plate s = ∞, the following levels of convective heat transfer enhancement were observed: 29.5% (s = 0.045 m), 38.8% (s = 0.085 m) and 61.6% (s = 0.180 m).

  • Natural ventilation performance of family building in cold climate during windless time
    • Romana Antczak-Jarząbska
    • Maciej Niedostatkiewicz
    2018 Full text Diagnostyka

In this paper, the field measurements results are presented on the stack ventilation effect. The paper presents the results of performance (air change rate ACH) natural ventilation for building with inlet gap measured for the transitional season (between heating and summer season). The measurements were performed during a windless time. The house was located in northern Poland, in a cold climate region. The measurement system measured local climate conditions, indoor climate conditions and air velocities in vent inlet and outlet. In this paper, the discharge coefficient was checked. The discharge coefficient of 0.83 was higher than the discharge coefficient of 0.6 which was usually assumed for small rectangular openings during the natural ventilation. In a wind absence when the stack effect acted only, the air change rate (ACH) slightly exceeded the standard minimum value

    2018 Full text Diagnostyka

Adequately designed natural ventilation is the cheapest and easiest way to effectively remove indoor pollutants and keep the fresh air inside a building. A prediction of performance and effectiveness of ventilation in order to determine the design of a ventilation system can provide real and long term cost savings. The paper presents results of performance (air change rate ACH) and effectiveness (CO2 concentration in the breathing zone and temperature distribution ) of natural ventilation for a building with inlet gap measured for the transitional season (between the heating and the summer season). The measurements were performed during a windy period. The test apartment was located in cold climate. The measurement system measured local climate conditions, indoor climate conditions and air velocities in both vent inlet and outlet.

In case of maritime communications, we observe a growing interest in deployment of multitask satellite-based solutions and development of new maritime-specific systems intended for improvements in safety of e-navigation. Analysis of different types of currently used maritime communication systems leads, however, to a conclusion that neither global and still very expensive satellite systems nor cheaper, but short-ranged transmission technologies can, on their own, fully meet the today's expectations and quality requirements formulated for broadband maritime systems. This lack of reliable solutions, offering high throughput and ubiquitous availability of coverage to a wide audience at a relatively low price is one of the main barriers in a widespread implementation of e-navigation initiatives. This issue is addressed in the netBaltic project with the objective to design, deploy and validate in a real maritime environment a non-satellite wireless communication system enabling ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore information exchange via a multi-hop network composed of onshore base stations, maritime vessels and other transit elements such as buoys. In the paper, the idea of a heterogeneous wireless maritime system is presented. Details of the proposed netBaltic node architecture are described highlighting the solutions introduced in the project as a response to specific maritime communication requirements. Numerical results of communication area coverage are presented for four different scenarios utilizing different wireless transmission technologies. In particular, they indicate that when using appropriate wireless communication solutions, the number of vessels being able to connect to Internet is significantly increased as compared to traditional wireless systems (capable of one-hop communication) from 14% for short-range transmission technologies up to as high as 127% in case when relatively long-range transmission technologies are employed within the system.

  • Networkig activities of general judiciary - from theory to practice

    2018 Full text e-mentor

Over the last three decades, networks - as a field of research - have acquired a significant place among management sciences. Unfortunately, in the judiciary they have become a subject of more careful analyses only recently, which resulted in a large discrepancy of knowledge - both in theory and in its practical adaptation for the needs of the courts. In order to fill this cognitive gap, an attempt was made to identify levels of organizational maturity of common courts in applying a network form of coordination to auxiliary activity. The basis material for the research was provided in 72 interviews with presidents and court heads, and observations of a non-standardized process of information exchange and knowledge sharing within the voluntary court network established during the implementation of the project hosted by the National School of Judiciary and Prosecutor's Office (Krajowa Szkoła Sądownictwa i Prokuratury) "Education in time management and court proceedings costs - case management" ("Edukacja w dziedzinie zarządzania czasem i kosztami postępowań sądowych - case management"). 60 regional, district and appeal courts from different appeals cooperated horizontally within the scope of this network. During the project, organizational and management solutions were implemented, such as: improvement of case flow management and efficiency of proceedings, development of effective information policy of courts and management of internal and external communication. As part of the exchange of information and knowledge sharing, the courts used the network form of coordination. The procedure proposed in this article designates five levels of organizational maturity of courts in the implementation of the network form of coordination. The developed procedure can be used to track the progress in the common courts' networking and to inspire the courts to use this form of coordination in practice.

Currently, there is lack of standardized conditions for the collection and analysis of e-cigarette (EC) aerosol. Considering the urgent need for the development of these guidelines, a procedure for EC aerosol analysis was developed. A novel automatic e-cigarette aerosol generator was designed. For the first time, melt-blown non-woven fabric was applied for the effective uptake of compounds released from vaporized e-liquid. The extraction procedure was optimized in terms of type of extraction solvent, amount of sorbent and solvent volume. For optimization, a model e-liquid containing flavour additives belonging to various chemicals group with various chemical properties was investigated. The aerosol trapping efficiency was satisfactory and was equal to 92 ± 7%. Final determination was performed by GC-MS/MS. Quantitation was based on the mass change tracking approach (MCT), which assumes the monitoring of e-liquid mass changes before and after vaping. The combination of non-woven fabric and sampling approach (MCT) was proven to be effective in acquisition of reliable data. Thus, the concentrations in aerosol and emission factors were calculated for aerosols collected during the vaping of both model e-liquids and real samples. Validation was performed by evaluating key analytical parameters, such as linearity, accuracy, precision, limit of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ). For all investigated compounds, recoveries from 70% to 118% together with precision and reproducibility below 12% were achieved. The applicability of the described approach was examined by analysing EC refill solutions commercially available on the Polish market.

  • New concept and analysis of the multicell piezoelectric motor
    • Roland Ryndzionek
    2018

This work presents the design, modeling and tests of the prototype multicell piezoelectric motor (MPM). A new concept of the electromechanical structure of the considered prototype is based on three rotating-mode actuators. The electromechanical structure of each actuator has been considered as an independent one - referred to as a ”single cell” (single actuator). Combined three resonant actuators generate three traveling waves which as a result improve the stability and performance of the MPM. The results of research carried out using analytical, simulation and experimental methods cover the torque vs. speed characteristics of the prototype MPM.

Luminescence enhanced by new structure of plasmonic platform with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) buffer layer deposited on gold nanostructures is investigated. Regularly distributed gold nanostructures of average dimension of 50 nm formed the active part of plasmonic platforms. They were manufactured on Corning 1737 glass substrate by melting of gold thin film. The nanostructures were coated by dielectric Al2O3 thin film with thickness of 6 nm deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. Thin film of Valrubicin as a luminescence material was deposited on prepared substrates by spin-coating technique. Luminescence spectra show that designed plasmonic platform with Al2O3 thin film between gold nanostructures and Valrubicin enhanced fluorescence intensity by about 4.5 times.

  • New results on estimation bandwidth adaptation
    • Maciej Niedźwiecki
    • Marcin Ciołek
    2018 Full text IFAC-PapersOnLine

The problem of identification of a nonstationary autoregressive signal using non-causal estimation schemes is considered. Noncausal estimators can be used in applications that are not time-critical, i.e., do not require real-time processing. A new adaptive estimation bandwidth selection rule based on evaluation of pseudoprediction errors is proposed, allowing one to adjust tracking characteristics of noncausal estimators to unknown and/or time-varying degree of signal nonstationary. The new rule is compared with the previously proposed one, based on the generalized Akaike’s final prediction error criterion.
