    2015 LWT-FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Bioactive compounds (polyphenols and ascorbic acid) and dietary fibers, and related antioxidant activities of commonly consumed apples, bananas, peaches, pears, blond and red grapefruits, pomelos, oranges, lemons, red plums, white grapes, mango, persimmon and strawberries grown in the same geographical and climatic conditions were compared with standard kiwi fruit. The presence of polyphenols was studied by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The contribution of dietary fibers to antioxidant activity of the fruits was minimal (R2 from 0.3078 to 0.3626), of the ascorbic acid – moderate (R2 from 0.6402 to 0.6734) and of total polyphenols - decisive (R2 from 0.9792 to 0.9827). It was found that strawberries and kiwi fruits have the highest phenolic contents and their antioxidant activities following by red plum > mango > white grapes ≥ persimmon > apples > pears ≥ red grapefruit > lemons = oranges = blond grapefruits ≥ pomelos > bananas > peaches (P < 0.05). FTIR spectroscopy and radical scavenging assays are suitable for bioactivity determination of these fruits. In order to receive best results for human consumption, a combination of these fruits has to be included in the everyday diet. The methods used are applicable for bioactivity determination in food analysis in general.

  • Quantitative risk assessment of new ship designs in damage conditions
    • Mirosław Gerigk
    2015

The paper is devoted to safety of ships in damage conditions. The novel contribution of the paper is connected with a new Multi-Task ship (MT-ship) design at the preliminary stage of design. There are a few problems at the preliminary stage that should be considered. One problem is connected with if the quantitative risk-based method is a reliable and formal method for safety assessment of such the new design (MT-ship) in damage conditions. The current method of safety assessment of commercial ships in damage conditions is based on the requirements included in the SOLAS 2009 regulations. The methods of safety assessment of navy ships in damage conditions belong to the different classification societies and navies. Further development of the SSADC method is connected with its application for safety assessment of a few novel designs.

Quantum entanglement may provide a huge boost in the precision of parameter estimation. However, quantum metrology seems to be extremely sensitive to noise in the probe state. There is an important still open question: What type of entanglement is useful as a resource in quantum metrology? Here we raise this question in relation to entanglement distillation. We provide a counterintuitive example of a family of bound entangled states which can be used in quantum enhanced metrology with the precision advantage approaching the Heisenberg limit. This shows that so-called distillability is not necessary for quantum advantage inmetrology. Surprisingly, entanglement of the applied states is very weak, which is reflected by the lack of the so-called unlockability property. Moreover we find instances where quantum Fisher information reports the presence of entanglement where a well-known class of nonlinear entanglement witnesses (stronger than multisetting correlation Bell inequalities) does not. We have thus provided strong evidence that quantum metrology can be treated as additional operational face of multipartite entanglement, independent of two other basic operational features used in quantum information theory: nonlocality and distillability.

2015 Pełny tekst PHYSICAL REVIEW A

In spite of all of its successes, quantum mechanics leaves us with a central problem: How does nature create a bridge from fragile quanta to the objective world of everyday experience? Here we find that a basic structure within quantum mechanics that leads to the perceived objectivity is a so-called spectrum broadcast structure. We uncover this based on minimal assumptions, without referring to any dynamical details or a concrete model. More specifically, working formally within the decoherence theory setting with multiple environments (called quantum Darwinism), we show how a crucial for quantum mechanics notion of nondisturbance due to Bohr [N. Bohr, Phys. Rev. 48, 696 (1935)] and a natural definition of objectivity lead to a canonical structure of a quantum

. Irradiations of plasmid DNA by both X-rays and UV light in the presence and absence of compounds containing platinum and bromine atoms were performed in order to asses the sensitization potential of these compounds. Plasmid DNA pBR322 was incubated with platinum (II) bromide, hydrogen hexabromoplatinate (IV), hydrogen hexahydroxyplatinate (IV) and sodium hexahydroxyplatinate (IV). Incubation was followed by X-ray or UV irradiations. It was found that amongst the sensitizers tested, during irradiations carried out in the presence of platinum (II) bromide, the highest levels of double strand breaks formation upon X-ray treatment were recorded. In contrast much less damage was induced by UV light. Data presented here suggests that this compound may be a promising radiosensitizer for cancer treatment.

Fractionated drilling wastes originating from shale gas exploration in the Baltic Basin in Pomerania were subjected to the measurements of mean activity concentrations of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs).To better understand rock structure and texture, the X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) observation were used. To compare activity concentration of radionuclides in bulk wastes and fractionated samples (the latter were obtained through a sieve analysis), they were analyzed by gamma-ray spectrometer, both before and after the Dean-Stark extraction. After fractionation, three different size ranges were distinguished. Radiological indices were estimated by comparison with the levels recommended by International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) and the equivalent absorbed dose was determined with respect to appropriated disposal of cuttings. The results show that the drilling cuttings from the Ordovician period have a natural radioactivity level comparable to other rocks with the same lithology (potassium K-40 800-992 Bq/kg and thorium Th-232 23.3-30.8 Bq/kg) and they do not exceed acceptable levels of total absorbed dose rate. The average global value is 55 nGy/h and the average absorbed dose rate in outdoor air 1 m above the drilling cuttings was 54.1nGy/h. The relation between particle size and natural radioactivity indicates that concentration of radionuclides increases as the fractions size decreases.

    2015

This paper reports preliminary studies on use of Raman spectroscopy for investigation of blood. High quality blood spectra were recorded in-vitro with excitation wavelengths of 830 nm. Because of complex composition of the blood as well as by light attenuation and scattering in the tissues, spectra set up from wide, low-intensive Raman bands and intensive optical background. To get information about origin of bands in Raman spectra it is necessary to create phantom, which would show influence of this parameter and can be used to calibrate the Raman measurement system. Spectra of phantoms of selected blood components were acquired and discussed.

    2015 NUTRITION RESEARCH

In the recent years, the consumption of seafood has increased. There are no results on the studies of Rapana venosa (Rv) as a supplementation to the diets. We hypothesized that Rv would increase antioxidant capacity and reduce blood lipids, based on the composition of bioactive compounds and fatty acids. Therefore, the aim of this investigation was to evaluate in vitro and in vivo actions of Rv from contaminated (C) and non-C (NC) regions of collection on lipid profiles, antioxidant capacity, and enzyme activities in serum of rats fed an atherogenic diet. Twenty-four male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups of 6 each and named control, cholesterol (Chol), Chol/RvC and Chol/RvNC. Rats of all 4 groups were fed the basal diet, which included wheat starch, casein, soybean oil, cellulose, vitamin (American Institute of Nutrition for laboratory animals vitamin mixtures), and mineral mixtures (American Institute of Nutrition for laboratory animals mineral mixtures). During 28 days of the experiment, the rats of the control group received the basal diet only, and the diets of the other 3 groups were supplemented with 1% of Chol, 1% of Chol, and 5% of Rv dry matter from C and NC areas. Dry matter from C and NC areas supplemented diets slightly hindered the rise in serum lipids vs Chol group: total Chol, 13.18% and 11.63% and low-density lipoprotein Chol, 13.57% and 15.08%, respectively. Cholesterol significantly decreased the value of total antioxidant capacity. The supplementation of Rv to the Chol diet significantly affected the increase of antioxidant capacity in serum of rats, expressed by the 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) method. The water extracts of Rv exhibited high binding properties with bovine serum albumin in comparison with quercetin. In conclusion, atherogenic diets supplemented with Rv from C and NC areas hindered both the rise in serum lipids levels and the decrease in the antioxidant capacity. Based on fluorescence and electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry profiles and in vivo studies, changes in the intensity of the found peaks were estimated in the serum samples after supplemented diets. These findings indicate that the supplementation of Rv to the atherogenic diets improve the lipid profiles and the antioxidant status in serum of rats.

  • Rapid design of miniaturised branch-line couplers through concurrent cell optimisation and surrogate-assisted fine-tuning
    • Sławomir Kozieł
    • Piotr Kurgan
2015 Pełny tekst IET Microwaves Antennas & Propagation

In this study, the authors introduce a methodology for low-cost simulation-driven design optimisation of highly miniaturised branch-line couplers (BLCs). The first stage of their design approach exploits fast concurrent optimisation of geometrically dependent, but electromagnetically isolated cells that constitute a BLC. The cross-coupling effects between the cells are taken into account in the second stage, where a surrogate-assisted fine-tuning procedure is executed. The tuning process is based on space-mapping-enhanced low-fidelity model of the entire BLC. The latter is constructed by cascading local response surface approximations (RSAs) of the BLC building blocks. The efficiency of their technique is demonstrated through the design of two compact BLCs. A considerable scale of miniaturisation has been achieved in both cases (83.7 and 87.4%, respectively), at the computational cost corresponding to a few EM simulations of the respective BLC. Comparison of numerical results with several surrogate-based design approaches as well as an experimental verification of the final designs are also provided.

2015 IEEE MICROWAVE AND WIRELESS COMPONENTS LETTERS

A methodology for rapid multi-objective design of compact microwave circuits is proposed. Our approach exploits point-by-point Pareto set identification using surrogate-based optimization techniques, auxiliary equivalent circuit models, and space mapping as the major model correction method. The proposed technique is illustrated and validated through the design of a compact rat-race coupler. A set of ten designs being trade-offs between electrical performance of the structure and its size (layout area) is obtained at the cost corresponding to less than thirty high-fidelity EM simulations of the circuit. Experimental verification of three selected designs is provided.

2015 Pełny tekst IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MICROWAVE THEORY AND TECHNIQUES

In this paper, we propose a simple, yet reliable methodology to expediteyield estimation and optimization of microwave structures. In our approach, the analysis of the entire response of the structure at hand (e.g., $S$-parameters asa function of frequency) is replaced by response surface modeling of suitablyselected feature points. On the one hand, this is sufficient to determinewhether a design satisfies given performance specifications. On the other,by exploiting the almost linear dependence of the feature points on the designableparameters of the structure, reliable yield estimates can be realized at lowcomputational cost. Our methodology is verified using two examples of waveguidefilters and one microstrip hairpin filter and compared with conventional MonteCarlo analysis based on repetitive electromagnetic simulations, as well aswith statistical analysis exploiting linear response expansions around thenominal design. Finally, we perform yield-driven design optimizations on thesefilters.

  • Razem czy osobno - zespoły a działania przedsiębiorcze
    • Katarzyna Stankiewicz
    2015
