  • Attributes of Entrepreneurial Teams as Elements of a Mental Model
    • Beata Krawczyk-Bryłka
2016 Pełny tekst Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

An entrepreneurial team can be defined as a small group of individuals holding ownership or control positions who create or develop an entrepreneurial venture and have shared commitments towards each other. Entrepreneurial teams start numerous new ventures or affect the performance of firms due to their social capital based on some characteristic attributes. The mental models of teams refer to internal, organised representation of team tasks, relations, skills and environment. A mental model of a team is dynamic and if it is shared by team members at the beginning of the team’s lifecycle, it is crucial for the team members’ cooperation and influences the team’s performance, satisfaction and viability. The vision of the entrepreneurial team’s characteristics is an important element of its members’ mental model they start their cooperation with. The aim of this article is to define the initial mental model of an entrepreneurial team and diagnose the young Poles’ image of entrepreneurial teams that can be a trigger or a barrier in developing collaborative entrepreneurship. The method used was based on a survey with open-ended questions conducted among 120 students. The presented results allow to propose the initial mental model for cooperation in entrepreneurial teams and creating a recommendation for preparing students to have a more open attitude towards team-based innovative enterprises.

2016 Pełny tekst Autobusy. Technika, Eksploatacja, Systemy Transportowe

  • Automatic Detection of Nerves in Confocal Corneal Images with Orientation-Based Edge Merging
    • Adam Brzeski
2016 Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing

The paper presents an algorithm for improving results of automatic nerve detections in confocal microscopy images of human corneal. The method is designed as a postprocessing step of regular detection. After the nerves are initially detected, the algorithms attempts to improve the results by filling unde-sired gaps between single nerves detections in order to correctly mark the entire nerve instead of only parts of it. This approach enables for reliable detection of long nerves, which can be used for more accurate elimination of short detec-tions and therefore eliminating noise. The method evaluates candidate gaps by analysing the orientation of segments to be merged in the area near the gap. Segments with sufficiently high orientation compliance are merged to form a single nerve detection. Despite using only a simple technique for initial detec-tion of nerves, the method enabled achieving a fairly low ratio of wrong nerve detections with a balanced level of overall accuracy.

    2016 Transportation Research Procedia

While there are many examples of Intelligent Transport System deployments in Poland, more attention should be paid to traffic incident management and detection on dual-carriageways and urban street networks. One of the aims of CIVITAS DYN@MO, a European Union funded project, is to use TRISTAR (an Urban Transport Management System) detection modules to detect incidents at junctions equipped with traffic signals. First part of paper provides an overview of urban incident detection methods and algorithms. Second part of paper describes how the TRISTAR system infrastructure and software are currently used for detecting incidents on urban artery sections (with higher speed limit). Because the need to detect incidents on other arteries was identified, research were undertaken that will lead to the development of algorithms for the detection of incidents on the streets equipped with traffic signals. The initial results of simulation studies (using VISSIM software) are presented in the third part of the paper. Their objective was to initially select parameters for detecting incidents at junctions equipped with traffic signals. Further research will look at a fusion of variables and possible other variables that may develop the algorithms. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to answer the question whether it is possible to recognise the gender of a web browser user on the basis of keystroke dynamics and mouse movements. Design/methodology/approach An experiment was organised in order to track mouse and keyboard usage using a special web browser plug-in. After collecting the data, a number of parameters describing the users’ keystrokes, mouse movements and clicks were calculated for each data sample. Then several machine learning methods were used to verify the stated research question. Findings The experiment showed that it is possible to recognise males and females on the basis of behavioural characteristics with an accuracy exceeding 70 per cent. The best results were obtained while using Bayesian networks. Research limitations/implications The first limitation of the study was the restricted contextual information, i.e. neither the type of web page browsed nor the user activity was taken into account. Another is the narrow scope of the respondent group. Future work should focus on gathering data from more users covering a wider age range and should consider the context. Practical implications Automatic gender recognition could be used in profiling a user to create personalised websites or as an additional feature in automatic identification for security reasons. It might be also considered as a confirmation of declared gender in web-based surveys. Social implications As not all users perceive personalised ads and websites as beneficial, this application requires the analysis of a user perspective to provide value to the consumer without privacy violation. Originality/value Behavioural characteristics, such as mouse movements and keystroke dynamics, have already been used for user authentication and emotion recognition, but applying these data to gender recognition is an original idea.

In this paper, a tuning method of a resonant circuit suited for wireless powering of miniature endoscopic capsules is presented and discussed. The method allows for an automatic tuning of the resonant frequency and matching impedance of a full wave rectifier loading the resonant circuit. Thereby, the receiver tunes so as to obtain the highest power efficiency under given conditions of transmission. A prototype receiver for wireless power reception, fabricated in in AMS CMOS 0.35 um technology, was used to verify correct operation of the proposed tuning. The prototype system produces a stable supply voltage, adjustable in the range of 1.2‒1.8 V at a maximum output current of 100‒67 mA, which is sufficient to power a typical endoscopic capsule.

  • Average Size of a Suffix Tree for Markov Sources

    2016

We study a suffix tree built from a sequence generated by a Markovian source. Such sources are more realistic probabilistic models for text generation, data compression, molecular applications, and so forth. We prove that the average size of such a suffix tree is asymptotically equivalent to the average size of a trie built over n independentsequences from the same Markovian source. This equivalenceis only known for memoryless sources. We then derive a formula for the size of a trie under Markovian model to complete the analysis for suffix trees. We accomplish our goal by applying some novel techniques of analytic combinatorics on words also known as analytic pattern matching

    2016 MICROBES AND ENVIRONMENTS

Two thirds of Svalbard archipelago islands in the High Arctic are permanently covered with glacial ice and snow. Polar bacterial communities in the southern part of Svalbard were characterized using an amplicon sequencing approach. A total of 52,928 pyrosequencing reads were analyzed in order to reveal bacterial community structures in stream and lake surface water samples from the Fuglebekken and Revvatnet basins of southern Svalbard. Depending on the samples examined, bacterial communities at a higher taxonomic level mainly consisted either of Bacteroidetes , Betaproteobacteria , and Microgenomates (OP11) or Planctomycetes , Betaproteobacteria , and Bacteroidetes members, whereas a population of Microgenomates was prominent in 2 samples. At the lower taxonomic level, bacterial communities mostly comprised Microgenomates , Comamonadaceae , Flavobacteriaceae , Legionellales , SM2F11, Parcubacteria (OD1), and TM7 members at different proportions in each sample. The abundance of OTUs shared in common among samples was greater than 70%, with the exception of samples in which the proliferation of Planctomycetaceae , Phycisphaeraceae , and Candidatus Methylacidiphilum spp. lowered their relative abundance. A multi-variable analysis indicated that As, Pb, and Sb were the main environmental factors influencing bacterial profiles. We concluded that the bacterial communities in the polar aquatic ecosystems examined mainly consisted of freshwater and marine microorganisms involved in detritus mineralization, with a high proportion of zooplankton-associated taxa also being identified.

The factors affecting prokaryotic and virus structure dynamics and bacterial commu-nity composition (BCC) in aquatic habitats along a ca. 1500 m of the Brattegg Valley lake–stream system (SW Spitsbergen) composed of three postglacial lakes created by Brattegg Glacier meltwater were examined. A high number of small-volume prokaryotic cells were found in the recently-formed, deep, upper, subglacial lake. Bacterial taxonomic diversity assessed by PCR-DGGE indicated that the lakes’ BCC differed; with its rich-ness decreasing down the system. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) revealed a BCC increase; mainly in α-Proteobacteria, Cytophaga/Flavobacterium and Actinobacteria. We found increasing β-ProteobacteriaandActinobacterianumbersand a decrease in α-Proteobacteriadownthe system. Our results indicate that glacial meltwater sustains an active bacterial community which is then stimulated or partly eliminated by the proglacial lakes’ higher temperature and nutrient input. We conclude that the prokaryotic succession along this lake–stream system occurs through changes in the structure of dominant bacte-rial communities, their replacement and elimination.
