  • Integrated Sectors - Diversified Earnings: The (Missing) Impact of Offshoring on Wages and Wage Convergence in the EU27
    • Aleksandra Parteka
    • Joanna Wolszczak-Derlacz
    2013 Pełny tekst

This paper assesses the impact of international outsourcing/offshoring practices on the process of wage equalization across manufacturing sectors in a sample of EU27 economies (1995-2009). We discriminate between heterogeneous wage effects on different skill categories of workers (low, medium and high skill). The main focus is on the labour market outcomes of vertical integration, so we augment a model of conditional wage convergence through the inclusion of sector-specific broad and narrow outsourcing/offshoring indices based on input-output data (World Input Output Database, April 2012 release). Two-way relations between trade and wages are addressed through the use of a gravity-based sector-level instrument. We find no evidence supporting unconditional skill-specific wage convergence in EU sectors. In a conditional setting, (slow) wage convergence takes place, but international outsourcing plays no role in wage equalization. Even though regression results indicate that offshoring reduces the wage growth of domestic medium- and low-skilled workers, we show that this negative effect is economically insignificant.

  • Integration of inertial sensors and GPS system data for the personal navigation in urban area
    • Krzysztof Bikonis
    • Jerzy Demkowicz
    2013

GPS and Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) have complementary properties and they are therefore well suited for integration. The integrated solution offers better long-term accuracy than a stand-alone INS and better integrity, availability and continuity or a stand-alone GPS receiver, making it suitable for demanding applications. The complementary features of INS and GPS are the main reasons why integrated GPS/INS systems are becoming increasingly popular. GPS/INS systems offer position, velocity, acceleration, attitude and angular velocity measurements with high accuracy, output rate and reliability in one package. In the paper integration algorithm of inertial sensors (accelerometers and gyroscopes) and GPS system data for the urban area personal navigation is presented. For data integration algorithm Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is proposed.

2013 Pełny tekst Elektronika Ir Elektrotechnika

Intensification of natural thermal convection near electric devices is possible by application of additional elements as screens creating convection canals close to the device. In the earlier authors paper the results of the analysis of thermal convection with the use of only one additional screen close to the electric device were presented. This paper presents computer modelling of thermal convection when two screens near the electric device are implemented. One of the screen is a wall close to the electric device

  • Interaction of Acoustic and Thermal Modes in the Vibrationally Relaxing Gases. Acoustic Cooling
    • Anna Perelomova
2013 Pełny tekst ACTA PHYSICA POLONICA A

The dynamic equation which governs an excess temperature associated with the thermal mode in vibrationally relaxing gas is derived. The nonlinear transfer of acoustic energy to the energy of the thermal mode in a relaxing gas causes slow variation of temperature with time. The nal dynamic equation is instantaneous. All types of sound, including aperiodic, may be considered as an acoustic source of corresponding heating or cooling. The study considers sound with frequencies much larger than the inverse time of the thermodynamic relaxation. In the nonequilibrium regime, if standard attenuation is neglected, gas temperature decreases with time. Examples concern heating and cooling caused by periodic in time sound and an impulse. The inuence of standard viscosity, thermal conductivity, and heat withdrawal is briey discussed.

2013 Pełny tekst WATER AIR AND SOIL POLLUTION

With the constant development of new ionic liquids, the understanding of the chemical fate of these compounds also needs to be updated. To this effect, in this contribution, the interaction of a number of novel ionic liquids with soils was determined. Therefore, three novel headgroups (ammonium, phosphonium or pyrrolidinium) with single or quaternary substitution were tested on a variety of soils with high to low organic matter content, and high to low cation exchange capacity, thereby trying to capture the full range of possible soil interactions. It was found that the ionic liquids with single butyl alkyl chains interacted more strongly with the soils (especially with a higher CEC), at lower concentrations, than the quad substituted ionic liquids. However, the quad substituted ionic liquids interacted stronger at higher concentrations, due to the double layer formation, and the stronger induced dipole interaction with previously sorbed molecules.

Composites consisting of SrTiO3-based perovskite and either yttria-stabilized zirconia or ceria were investigated. The mechanical compatibility and possible inter-diffusion between phases were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. A gradual disappearance of Ce-containing phases with an increase in the temperature of reduction in hydrogen was noticed. Moreover, a diffusion of Sr, Ti, and Ce was observed between the composites and the yttria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte support in the conditions of high temperature (1300–1400 8C) reduction in H2.

  • INTER-LAYER SHARING OF BACKUP PATH CAPACITIES PROVIDING FAST SERVICE RECOVERY IN IP-MPLS/WDM NETWORKS
    • Wojciech Molisz
    • Jacek Rak
    2013

In this paper, we investigate the issue of providing the transmission continuity in IP-MPLS/WDM networks in the presence of failures of nodes/links. Special focus is put on assuring fast restoration of flows affected after a failure in a scenario assuming sharing the backup path capacities in order to decrease the overall bandwidth consumption. In particular, we propose a new approach to inter-layer sharing of link capacity reserved for backup paths that does not increase the length of backup paths. It is thus able to provide the smallest possible values of service recovery time. Proposed solution is dedicated to the case of multiple classes of service suitable for differentiated requirements of end-users. We showed in extensive simulations that our approach leads to significant savings in service restoration time (up to 33% smaller values compared to the common approach to inter-layer backup capacity sharing) and backup paths capacity required to provide the survivable routing (up to 54%). To the best of authors’ knowledge, the proposed method to inter-layer sharing of link capacity is the first one that does not increase the length of backup paths.

  • Interplay of hydrogen bonding and aryl-perfluoroaryl interactions in construction of supramolecular aggregates
    • Katarzyna Eichstaedt
    2013

The stacking between aryl and perfluoroaryl units is an important class of the aromatic – aromatic interactions that has attracted rapidly growing interest in recent years. Continuing interest of our group in this subject it had been prepared three new complexes of pentafluorobenzoic acid with benzyl alcohol, 4-methylbenzyl alcohol and 4-tert-butylbenzyl alcohol and in the next step investigated their self-assembly modes by crystallographic analysis. The synthesis of the complexes required diffraction quality crystals which were obtained by a slow evaporation from suitable solvents. The results may allow to have a better understanding of molecular self-assembly mechanisms by cooperation of hydrogen bonding and aryl-perfluoroaryl interactions and facilitate a manipulation of the supramolecular architectures in the solid state.

We report the fabrication of graphene oxide (GO) based polyurethane (PU) nanocomposites by a simple method of mixing and their shape memory properties at different temperatures. Both the polymer and the filler were synthesized in the laboratory by simple and easy methods – PU by pre-polymer method and GO by improved graphene oxide synthesis method. High molecular level dispersion of GO platelets within the PU matrix and thus good mechanical properties were maintained by the improved PU/GO interfacial interaction. The structure of the polymer composites was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies revealed a highly dispersed morphology of graphene oxide sheets in PU.

  • Interspecies distances between propionic acid degraders and methanogens in syntrophic consortia for optimal hydrogen transfer

    2013 Environmental Biotechnology

A mixed culture from an anaerobic biowaste digester was enriched on propionate and used to investigate interspecies hydrogen transfer in dependence of spatial distances between propionate degraders and methanogens. From 20.3 mM propionate, 20.8 mM acetate and 15.5 mM methane were formed. Maximum specific propionate oxidation and methane formation rates were 49 and 23 mmol mg−1day−1, respectively. Propionate oxidation was inhibited by only 20 mM acetate by about 50 %. Intermediate formate formation during inhibited methanogensis was observed. The spatial distribution and the biovolume fraction of propionate degraders and of methanogens in relation to the total population during aggregate formation were determined. Measurements of interbacterial distances were conducted with fluorescence in situ hybridization by application of group-specific 16S rRNA-targeted probes and 3D image analyses. With increasing incubation time, floc formation and growth up to 54 μm were observed. Propionate degraders and methanogens were distributed randomly in the flocs. The methanogenic biovolume fraction was high at the beginning and remained constant over 42 days, whereas the fraction of propionate degraders increased with time during propionate feeding. Interbacterial distances between propionate degraders and methanogens decreased with time from 5.30 to 0.29 μm, causing an increase of the maximum possible hydrogen flux from 1.1 to 10.3 nmolml−1min−1. The maximum possible hydrogen flux was always higher than the hydrogen formation and consumption rate, indicating that reducing the interspecies distance by aggregation is advantageous in complex ecosystems.

  • Interworking and Cross-layer Service Discovery Extensions for IEEEE802.11s Wireless Mesh Standard
    • Krzysztof Gierłowski
2013 Pełny tekst Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology

With the rapid popularization of mobile end-user electronic devices wireless network technologies begin to play a crucial role as networks access technologies. While classic point-to-multipoint wireless access systems, based on fixed infrastructure of base stations providing access to clients, remain the main most popular solution, an increasing attention is devoted to wireless mesh systems, where each connecting client can extend overall resources of the network by becoming a network node capable of forwarding transit traffic. This ability results in severe reduction of the necessary network infrastructure, provides through coverage (thereby offering significant step towards ubiquity of network access) and offers massive redundancy. One of the most promising wireless mesh solutions currently being developed is an IEEE 802.11s standard, based on popular WiFi technology (IEEE 802.11 standards family). It combines low deployment costs with comprehensive suite of mechanisms able to operate a self-forming, autoconfigurable, dynamically extending, and secure mesh solution. However, despite its advantages, the standard lacks sufficient support for a number of functionalities, which can lead to significant inefficiency and degradation of service quality in real-world IEEE 802.11s network deployments. In the paper we propose a number of extensions of IEEE 802.11s mechanisms, designed to provide better service quality in case of real-world deployment scenarios, especially in case of large systems. Both propositions introduce modifications to mesh path discovery and interworking procedures, while retaining compatibility with standard solution. Their basic functionality and efficiency have been verified by means of simulation model in large-scale, self-organizing mesh structure. Subsequently they have been implemented and tested in real-world, access network testbed deployment. The results clearly indicate their utility, particularly in case of larger deployments of this network system type.
