  • On trees with double domination number equal to 2-domination number plus one
    • Marcin Krzywkowski
    2013 HOUSTON JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICS

A vertex of a graph is said to dominate itself and all of its neighbors. A subset D subseteq V(G) is a 2-dominating set of G if every vertex of V(G)D is dominated by at least two vertices of D, while it is a double dominating set of G if every vertex of G is dominated by at least two vertices of D. The 2-domination (double domination, respectively) number of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a 2-dominating (double dominating, respectively) set of G. We characterize all trees with the double domination number equal to the 2-domination number plus one.

A possible [2+2] or [4+2] cycloaddition product of ketene to imines was not observed.

  • One-Step Synthesis of W/O and O/W Emulsifiers in the Presence of Surface Active Agents
    • Elwira Sadecka
    • Halina Szeląg
2013 JOURNAL OF SURFACTANTS AND DETERGENTS

The main goal of this study was to describe the method of the synthesis of the dodecyl-, tetradecyl-, hexadecyl- and octadecyl-propylene glycol emulsifiers in the presence of selected anionic and nonionic surfactants. Acyl propylene glycol emulsifiers were produced by esterification of propane-1,2-diol (propylene glycol, PG) with C12:0-C18:0 fatty acids in the presence of anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonionic-poly(ethylene glycol) monolaurate (PEGML). The presence of SDS and PEGML in the reaction system caused microemulsion formation. Depending on the structure and amount of the surfactant in the system reactions proceeded at different rates and with different efficiency levels. The esterification of propylene glycol carried out under applied conditions causes products with the desired contents of propylene glycol monoesters (MAPG) to be obtained in a one-step reaction. Knowledge of the reaction kinetics creates the possibility to program the composition and properties of the synthesized emulsifiers. The interaction of nonionic, lipophilic MAPG with anionic, hydrophilic SDS or nonionic, hydrophilic PEGML influences the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) values of the products which may be used to stabilize water-in-oil (W/O) and oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. Use of the synthesized compounds allows stable emulsions to be prepared which include the following vegetable fats in the oil phase: mango oil, palm oil, shorea butter and hydrogenated soybean oil.

  • On-line ranking of split graphs
    • Piotr Borowiecki
    • Dariusz Dereniowski
2013 Pełny tekst DISCRETE MATHEMATICS AND THEORETICAL COMPUTER SCIENCE

A vertex ranking of a graph G is an assignment of positive integers (colors) to the vertices of G such that each path connecting two vertices of the same color contains a vertex of a higher color. Our main goal is to find a vertex ranking using as few colors as possible. Considering on-line algorithms for vertex ranking of split graphs, we prove that the worst case ratio of the number of colors used by any on-line ranking algorithm and the number of colors used in an optimal off-line solution may be arbitrarily large. This negative result motivates us to investigate semi on-line algorithms, where a split graph is presented on-line but its clique number is given in advance. We prove that there does not exist a (2-ɛ)-competitive semi on-line algorithm of this type. Finally, a 2-competitive semi on-line algorithm is given.

  • Online sound restoration system for digital library applications
    • Andrzej Czyżewski
    • Andrzej Ciarkowski
    • Bożena Kostek
    • Janusz Cichowski
    2013

Audio signal processing algorithms were introduced to the new online non-commercial service for audio restoration intended to enhance the content of digitized audio repositories. Missing or distorted audio samples are predicted using neural networks and a specific implementation of the Jannsen interpolation method based on the autoregressive model (AR) combined with the iterative restoring of missing signal samples. Since the distortion prediction and compensations algorithms are computationally complex, an implementation which uses parallel computing has been proposed. Many archival recordings are at the same time clipped and affected by wideband noise. To restore those recordings, the algorithm based on the concatenation of signal clipping reduction and spectral expansion was proposed. The clipping reduction algorithm uses an intelligent interpolation to replace distorted samples with the predicted ones based on learning algorithms. Next, spectral expansion is performed in order to reduce the overall level of noise. The online service has been extended with some copyright protection mechanisms. Immunity of watermarks to the sound restoration is discussed with regards to low-level music feature vectors embedded as watermarks. Then, algorithmic issues pertaining watermarking techniques are briefly recalled. The architecture of the designed system is presented.

  • Online stores' credibility: the moderating role of customers' gender and self-efficacy
    • Igor Garnik
    • Beata Basińska
    2013

The evaluation of online stores’ credibility by customers in regard of gender and self-efficacy is presented. Two groups of attributes, usability and informational content, were characteristics of credibility. The survey involved students as representatives of the largest group of the Internet users. As shown by the results obtained, the informational content of online stores (such as recommendations) and its professionalism was valued higher by women than by men. The evaluation of credibility attributes was not affected by customers’ self-efficacy. The moderating role of gender and self-efficacy was revealed in the evaluation of unprofessionalism. These results may be applied for designing the informational content of online stores.

  • Ontologie vs. reguły — porównanie metod reprezentacji wiedzy na przykładzie dziedziny zarządzania usługami informatycznymi
    • Adam Czarnecki
    • Tomasz Sitek

  • Ontologies vs. Rules — Comparison of Methods of Knowledge Representation Based on the Example of IT Services Management
    • Adam Czarnecki
    • Tomasz Sitek
    2013

This text provides a brief overview of selected structures aimed at knowledge representation in the form of ontologies based on description logic and aims at comparing them with their counterparts based on the rule-based approach. Due to the limitations on the length of the article, only elements associated with the representation of concepts could be shown, without including roles. The formalisms of the OWL language were used to record ontologies, while the rules were expressed in Prolog. To better illustrate these two ways of knowledge representation, examples of best practices from the field of IT services management were used, which are contained in a set of publications known as the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL). The purpose of the comparison is to examine the possibility of using an ontological approach in situations where the use of rule-based solutions is problematic.

  • Ontology Oriented Approach to Service Selection and Invocation in Complex Context Analysis
    • Sławomir Nasiadka
    2013

Context-aware applications running in the intelligent space are taken into account and their execution in the service oriented environment is considered. It has been presented where and how SOA services can be utilized during their execution: to analyze current context of the application and to support execution of strictly determined actions suitable for that context. The proposed mechanism of context-aware service selection and invocation is based on two items: ontology description of the context and a model of available services. It is shown that proposed solution is less efficient but more flexible than direct context analysis.

  • Ontology-Driven Rule-Based Model for an Extension of Information Technology Infrastructure Library Processes
    • Jarosław Pastuszak
    • Adam Czarnecki
    • Cezary Orłowski
    2013 CYBERNETICS AND SYSTEMS

The aim of this study is to present the stages for building a development model to create information technology (IT) systems for IT service providers. In order to ensure the consistency of the model, a novel solution is proposed where the stages of the model's construction are controlled using ontologies dedicated to the ITIL standard. In this article, a description of models used to assess the provider organization, with particular focus on the ITIL model, is presented first. Then, the design stages of a custom graph and rule-based model of development are introduced. Next, the role of ontologies in the assessment of the consistency of ITIL processes is explored. Further, the resulting development model in its general and detailed versions is verified by means of its implementation.

  • OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS OF CONSTRUCTED WETLAND FOR LANDFILL LEACHATE TREATMENT: CASE STUDY
    • Hanna Obarska-Pempkowiak
    • Magdalena Gajewska
    • Ewa Wojciechowska
2013 Pełny tekst Journal of Ecological Engineering

The present paper discusses the quality fluctuations of leachate from municipal landfill in Gdansk (Poland) over the last 5 years and the evaluation of a wetland system designed for treatment of the leachate. The research has been conducted during a 5-year period. The constructed wetland for leachate treatment was built in 2001; it consists of 2 horizontal subsurface flow reed beds, working in parallel. In the period 2005–2006 it underwent modernization due to unsatisfactory treatment results caused by bed clogging. After the modernization the treatment effectiveness is satisfactory. The effluent from bed I met Polish outflow standards, while in the effluent from bed II COD, total N and TSS exceeded the required concentrations. In spite of this, pre-treatment of leachate (iron removal) should be quickly introduced to protect the system against the reoccurrence of clogging problems.
