Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and 2-amino-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol (TRIS) were investigated by electron impact ionization and low energy electron attachment. Both compounds are components of biological buffers and often are used as DNA stabilizers in irradiation studies. hus it is of a great importance to understand their potential interactions with radiation. Our results revealed that at least one of them, EDTA, may influence the experimental outcomes by O− and OH− production upon electron attachment.

The topography, microstructure and electrical properties of strontium-borate glass and SBO glass containing bismuth and vanadium oxides, were studied. The structure was measured using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDS) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM) methods. The A.C. complex conductivity was investigated as a function of temperature and frequency. The influence of the quantity of bismuth and vanadium oxides present, on glasses microstructure and electrical properties, was discussed. In order to obtain glass-ceramics, the glasses were subjected to crystallization at temperatures close to the exothermic processes indicated by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. X- ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were carried out to determine the presence of bismuth vanadate (Bi2VO5.5) crystalline phase in heat-treated samples. After heat-treatment, there were still some traces of the glassy phase within the samples. The effect of the crystallization process on the microstructure, topography and dielectric behavior of the material was analyzed. The A.C. dielectric permittivity, conductivity and impedance were discussed at specific temperature and frequency region, in addition conduction mechanisms were proposed.

    2015 SYNTHETIC METALS

We report on the analysis of an electrostatic interface recombination in a system consisting of disordered organic materials. This process is a consequence of the polarization effect which takes place at the interface of two phases characterized by different permittivities. In this paper, the impact of tail and deep localized states on the recombination order is demonstrated. We also discuss the influence of temperature on this process.

W ramach stu-dium opracowano model symulacyjny w oprogramowaniu Matlab/Simulink i przeprowadzono w nim przejazd teo-retyczny. Na podstawie wyników bilansu energetycznego dobrano zasobnik umożliwiający zasilenie pojazdu na wybranym odcinku PKM.

  • Emergent Versus Deliberate Knowledge Management Strategy: Literature Review and Case Study Analysis

    • E. Scarso

    2015

This paper discusses emergent and deliberate knowledge management (KM) strategies on the basis of literature review and case study analysis. It grounds on the results of a comprehensive analysis of the literature on KM strategies and approaches adopted by companies of various sizes. Although KM strategies have been abundantly examined by scholars, not many studies compare deliberate and emergent approaches. By examining the case of two companies that adopted the two opposite approaches, the paper contributes to a better understanding of their character. The two KM approaches are illustrated with regard to aspects such as: origin, restraints, promoters, scope, universality, and adaptability. In addition, although it is not possible to generalize, and such an assignment cannot be taken as a golden rule, the paper advocates that emergent KM strategies might better fit the characteristics of small firms, while deliberate KM strategies might be more appropriate in the case of larger companies. Furthermore, the analysis seems to indicate that emergent KM approach is more in line with a KM personalisation strategy. At the same time both the approaches can equally support the different KM processes. The study suggests that companies should be aware of the strengths and the weaknesses of the two approaches, in order to choose the one that is more suitable to their organisational settings and operational circumstances. A limitation of the study is that the empirical results are restricted to two companies only (one in Italy and one in Poland).

  • Emotion Recognition Using Physiological Signals
    • Wioleta Szwoch
    2015

In this paper the problem of emotion recognition using physiological signals is presented. Firstly the problems with acquisition of physiological signals related to specific human emotions are described. It is not a trivial problem to elicit real emotions and to choose stimuli that always, and for all people, elicit the same emotion. Also different kinds of physiological signals for emotion recognition are considered. A set of the most helpful biosignals is chosen. An experiment is described that was performed in order to verify the possibility of eliciting real emotions using specially prepared multimedia presentations, as well as finding physiological signals that are most correlated with human emotions. The experiment was useful for detecting and identifying many problems and helping to find their solutions. The results of this research can be used for creation of affect-aware applications, for instance video games, that will be able to react to user’s emotions.

In this chapter, information about some of the estrogenic compounds and their environmental fate and biological influence can be found. Special attention is paid to the review of the analytical approaches used at the stages of detection and determination of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) in the environmental samples. Also, a brief characterization of both cellular and non-cellular bioassays is presented. The discovery of micropollutants occurring in the environment resulted in new methodologies being put into the analytical practice. These methodologies are developed in two different directions. The first is based on methodological solutions designed to detect, identify, and determine xenobiotics that occur in various environmental samples. For this purpose, instrumental methods such as gas and liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry detection are usually used. The second approach is to put into the analytical practice the new bioanalytical methodologies. These methodologies allow the estimation of the sample endocrine potential, but they do not provide the information about which of the sample ingredient is responsible for causing the toxic effect. These results can be the basis for estimating the endocrine potential of the environment exhibited by certain species. Moreover, bioanalytical techniques may be supplementary to the techniques of quantitative and qualitative determination of EDCs.

We present transition metal-embedded (T@Gan) endohedral Ga clusters as a favorable structural motif for superconductivity and develop empirical, molecule-based, electron counting rules that govern the hierarchical architectures that the clusters assume in binary phases. Among the binary T@Gan endohedral cluster systems, Mo8Ga41, Mo6Ga31, Rh2Ga9, and Ir2 Ga9 are all previously known superconductors. The well-known exotic superconductor PuCoGa5 and related phases are also members of this endohedral gallide cluster family. We show that electron-deficient compounds like Mo8Ga41 prefer architectures with vertex-sharing gallium clusters, whereas electron-rich compounds, like PdGa5, prefer edge-sharing cluster architectures. The superconducting transition temperatures are highest for the electron-poor, corner-sharing architectures. Based on this analysis, the previously unknown endohedral cluster compound ReGa5 is postulated to exist at an intermediate electron count and a mix of corner sharing and edge sharing cluster architectures. The empirical prediction is shown to be correct and leads to the discovery of superconductivity in ReGa5. The Fermi levels for endohedral gallide cluster compounds are located in deep pseudogaps in the electronic densities of states, an important factor in determining their chemical stability, while at the same time limiting their superconducting transition temperatures.

    2015

Abstract. One of the most important disadvantage of resistive gas sensors is their limited gas selectivity. Therefore, various methods modulating their physical properties are used to improve gas detection. These methods are usually limited to temperature modulation or UV light irradiation for the layers exhibiting photocatalytic effect. These methods cause increased energy consumption. In our study we consider how much energy has to be supplied to utiliz such methods and what kind of additional information can be gathered. We present experimental results of selected resistive gas sensors, including commercial and prototype constructions, and practical solutions of modulating their physical properties

    2015 NANOSCALE

We report on the novel composite nanostructures based on boron-doped diamond thin film grown on top of TiO2 nanotubes. The nanostructures made of BDD-modified titania nanotubes showed an increase in activity and performance when used as electrodes in electrochemical environments. The BDD thin films (~200-500 nm) were deposited using microwave plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (MW PA CVD) onto anodically fabricated TiO2 nanotube arrays. The influence of boron-doping level, methane admixture and growth time on the performance of Ti/TiO2/BDD electrode was studied in detail. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to investigate the surface morphology and grain size distribution. Moreover, the chemical composition of TiO2/BDD electrodes was investigated by means of micro-Raman Spectroscopy. The composite electrodes TiO2/BDD are characterized by the significantly higher capacitive current comparing to BDD film deposited directly onto Ti substrate. The novel composite electrode of TiO2 nanotube array overgrown by boron-doped diamond (BDD) immersed in 0.1 M NaNO3 can deliver specific capacitance of 2.10, 4.79, 7.46 mF cm-2 at a scan rate of 10 mV/s for [B]/[C] ratio 2k, 5k and 10k, respectively. The substantial improvement of electrochemical performance and excellent rate capability could be attributed to synergistic effect of TiO2 treatment in CH4:H2 plasma and high electrical conductivity of BDD layer. Analysis of electrochemical impedance spectra according to electric equivalent circuit allows to determine surface area on the basis of value of constant phase element.
