  • Parametrical Method for Determining Optimal Ship Carrying Capacity and Performance of Handling Equipment
    • Jan Michalski
2016 Pełny tekst Polish Maritime Research

The paper presents a method of evaluating the optimal value of the cargo ships deadweight and the coupled optimal value of cargo handling capacity. The method may be useful at the stage of establishing the main owners requirements concerning the ship design parameters as well as for choosing a proper second hand ship for a given transportation task. The deadweight and the capacity are determined on the basis of a selected economic measure of the transport effectiveness of ship – the Required Freight Rate. The mathematical model of the problem is of a deterministic character and the simplifying assumptions are justified for ships operating in the liner trade. The assumptions are so selected that solution of the problem is obtained in analytical closed form. The presented method can be useful for application in the preliminary ship design or in the simulation of pre-investment transportation task studies.

Badanie DMT wykorzystano do wyznaczenia parametrów wytrzymałościowych podłoża (kąta tarcia wewnętrznego warstwy górnej i wytrzymałości na ścinanie bez odpływu podłoża słabonośnego) oraz do wyznaczenia modułu odkształcenia gruntu MDMT. Wyznaczono wartości charakterystyczne poszczególnych parametrów na podstawie wyników z pięciu badań dylatometrycznych na poletku doświadczalnym. Przeanalizowano różne metody oszacowania wartości charakterystycznej parametrów geotechnicznych.

  • Participatory Budgeting in Poland – Missing Link in Urban Regeneration Process
    • Dorota Dominika Kamrowska-Załuska
    2016 Pełny tekst Procedia Engineering

In last thirty years Poland has gone a long way toward democracy and decentralization. Role of public participation in planning is increasing rapidly and recently many new instruments of empowering the community is being introduced, participatory budgeting is one of the most important. On the other hand, urban regeneration is one of the most important challenges of polish cities are facing. Technical and transport infrastructure investments are, in most cases, financed by public sphere. We can also observe increasing role of NGO’s in neighbourhood regeneration process but their scope of actions is mostly limited to soft projects. The paper tries to answer the question whether participatory budget can fill this gap and be a source of financing local community needs. This paper shows the creation and evolution of participatory budgets in Poland as well as the process of their implementation including examples of projects financed from participatory budget in Polish cities. It consists of analyses of participatory budgets’ expenditures structure and influence of the projects on the neighbourhood and the city. It also assesses long term influence and identify barriers, challenges and opportunities of using this instrument in urban regeneration process.

    2016

A numerical study concerning multi-objective optimization of antenna structures using sequential domain patching (SDP) technique has been presented. We investigate the effect of various setups of the patch size on the operation of the SDP algorithm and possible trade-offs concerning the quality of the Pareto set found by SDP and the computational cost of the optimization process. Our considerations are illustrated using a UWB monopole antenna.

Objectives The identification of species in the Arthroderma otae complex is essential to determine the origin of infection and to eliminate the risk of transmission. Microsporum canis is a zoophilic species, whereas Microsporum audouinii and Microsporum ferrugineum are anthropophilic species. In this paper, we propose alternative methods that permit species-specific identification of both anthropophilic and zoophilic members of the A. otae complex Methods Two PCR assays were designed based on differences in the DNA fragment encoding b-tubulin and were applied in both traditional and real-time PCR using DNA isolated by rapid method from culture. Result The two assays presented in this study enable the identification of M. canis and M. audouinii/M. ferrugineum with 100% sensitivity and specificity by both traditional and real-time PCR. Conclusion We developed a new diagnostic assay using specific primers and both traditional and real-time PCR reactions that can be applied in routine laboratory prax

  • Pedestrian protection, speed enforcement and road network structure the key action for implementing Poland's Vision Zero
    • Kazimierz Jamroz
    • Wojciech Kustra
    • Marcin Budzyński

    2016 Transportation Research Procedia

Since 1991 Poland's road safety has been systematically improving with a 60% reduction in road deaths. Despite the progress Poland continues to be one of the European Union' worst performing countries. The country's main road safety problems remain unchanged: dangerous behaviour of road users, underdeveloped system of road safety management and low quality of road infrastructure. This is why subsequent road safety programmes (implemented over the 20 years) were designed to improve pedestrian safety, reduce speeding and treat sources of roadside hazards. The article gives a short diagnosis of Poland's road safety, evaluates its subsequent road safety programmes called GAMBIT 1996, GAMBIT 2000 and GAMBIT 2005 with its far-reaching Vision Zero just as in a number of countries. The main road safety problems that Poland must solve are identified. A risk-based road safety management method is outlined. An overview is given of a method for estimating fatalities in Poland as a road safety management tool. At its strategic level, the fatality estimation method uses models built on an analysis of 60 countries worldwide and calibrates them to Polish conditions. It puts special emphasis on pedestrian safety, speed management and the design and construction of safety road infrastructure. Finally, selected examples are presented to show the effectiveness of the measures and recommended actions to reduce Poland's road deaths. (C) 2016 Published by Elsevier B.V.

  • Perfectly Wetting Mixtures of Surfactants from Renewable Resources: The Interaction and Synergistic Effects on Adsorption and Micellization
    • Patrycja Szumała
    • Alicja Mówińska
2016 JOURNAL OF SURFACTANTS AND DETERGENTS

This paper presents a study of the surface properties of mixtures of surfactants originating from renewable sources, i.e., alkylpolyglucoside (APG), ethoxylated fatty alcohol (AE), and sodium soap (Na soap). The main objective was to optimize the surfactant ratio which produces the highest wetting properties during the analysis of the solution of the individual surfactants, twoand three-component mixtures, and at different pH values. The results showed the existence of a synergistic effect in lowering the interfacial tension, critical micelle concentration and the formation of mixed micelles in selected solutions. We found that best wetting properties were measured for the binary AE:APG mixtures. It has been demonstrated that slightly lower contact angles values were observed on Teflon and glass surfaces for the AE:APG:-soap mixtures but the results were obtained for higher concentration of the components. In addition, all studied solutions have very good surface properties in acidic, basic and neural media. However, the AE:soap (molar ratio of 1:2), AE:APG (2:1) and AE:APG:soap (1:1:1) compositions improved their wetting power at pH 7 on the aluminium and glass surfaces, as compared to solutions at other pH values tested (selected H values close to zero— perfectly wetting liquids). All described effects detected would allow less surfactant to be used to achieve the maximum capacity of washing, wetting or solubilizing while minimizing costs and demonstrating environmental care.

  • Performance analyses of helical coil heat exchangers. The effect of external coil surface modification on heat exchanger effectiveness

2016 Pełny tekst Archives of Thermodynamics

The shell and coil heat exchangers are commonly used in heating, ventilation, nuclear industry, process plant, heat recovery and air conditioning systems. This type of recuperators benefits from simple construction, the low value of pressure drops and high heat transfer. In helical coil, centrifugal force is acting on the moving fluid due to the curvature of thetube results in the development. It has been long recognized that the heattransfer in the helical tube is much better than in the straight ones because of the occurrence of secondary flow in planes normal to the main flow inside the helical structure. Helical tubes show good performance in heattransfer enhancement, while the uniform curvature of spiral structure is inconvenient in pipe installation in heat exchangers. Authors have presentedtheir own construction of shell and tube heat exchanger with intensified heat transfer. The purpose of this article is to assess the influence of the surface modification over the performance coefficient and effectiveness. The experiments have been performed for the steady-state heat transfer. Experimental data points were gathered for both laminar and turbulent flow, both for co current- and countercurrent flow arrangement. To find optimal heat transfer intensification on the shell-side authors applied the number of transfer units analysis.

We propose the use of smart glasses to collaborate with smart objects in the Internet of Things environment. Particularly we are focusing on new interaction methods and the analysis of acceptable reaction times in the process of object recognition using smart glasses. We evaluated the proposed method using user studies and experiments with three different smart glasses: Google Glass, Epson Moverio, and the developed eGlasses platform. We conclude that using the proposed method it is possible to recognize objects and process information allowing object detection below the average acceptance response times specified by almost all participants in the user study. Additionally, we showed that eye-tracking can be used for simple interaction between a user and a graphical user interface presented in the near-to-eye display.

  • Performance and Power-Aware Modeling of MPI Applications for Cluster Computing
    • Jerzy Proficz
    • Paweł Czarnul
    2016 Pełny tekst

The paper presents modeling of performance and power consumption when running parallel applications on modern cluster-based systems. The model includes basic so-called blocks representing either computations or communication. The latter includes both point-to-point and collective communication. Real measurements were performed using MPI applications and routines run on three different clusters with both Infiniband and Gigabit Ethernet interconnects. Regression allowed to obtain specific coefficients for particular systems, all modeled with the same formulas. The model has been incorporated into the MERPSYS environment for modeling parallel applications and simulation of execution on large-scale cluster and volunteer based systems. Using specific application and system models, MERPSYS allows to predict application execution time, reliability and power consumption of resources used during computations. Consequently, the proposed models for computational and communication blocks are of utmost importance for the environment.

    2016

The new technology of wide band gap semiconductors is said to outperform up-to-date silicon devices. High voltage Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistors, now emerging in the market, have even three times shorter switching times and even four times smaller energy losses compared to the best in-class Si devices. In this paper the performance of a 650 V GaN SSFET is evaluated and compared with the newest silicon family of CoolMOS™ technology. Switching times of transistors are measured in a double-pulse test. Moreover, a prototype buck converter is built with two kinds of transistors. In this setup efficiencies are experimentally measured and compared. It is proved that application with SSFETs allows ease of operation and reduced power losses. Finally, the benefits of achieving high switching frequency (500 kHz) when it comes to a reduction of an inductor in an output filter are described.

  • Performance evaluation of the parallel object tracking algorithm employing the particle filter
    • Grzegorz Szwoch
    2016

An algorithm based on particle filters is employed to track moving objects in video streams from fixed and non-fixed cameras. Particle weighting is based on color histograms computed in the iHLS color space. Particle computations are parallelized with CUDA framework. The algorithm was tested on various GPU devices: a desktop GPU card, a mobile chipset and two embedded GPU platforms. The processing speed depending on the number of particles and the size of a tracked object was measured. The aim of experiments was to assess the performance of the parallel algorithm and to test whether the currently available GPU devices are capable of real-time tracking of large moving objects in video streams from surveillance cameras.

    2016 Applied Mechanics and Materials

This study is focused on experimental investigation of a selected type of brazed plate heat exchanger (PHEx). The main aim of the paper was to experimentally check the ability of nanofluids to enhance the performance of PHEx. A typical water-Al2O3 nanofluid was tested and compared to that of the base fluid, i.e. water. Nanoparticles were tested at the concentration of 0.1% and 1% by weight. Impact of the 1 day and 3 days break of operation of the tested PHEx on its performance was of particular interest. Pressure drop in all runs was measured as well. The Wilson approach was applied in order to estimate average heat transfer coefficients for the PHEx passages. It was observed, that addition of nanoparticles resulted in deterioration of an overall heat transfer coefficient for the selected PHEx and tested conditions, i.e. temperature range and Reynolds number. Moreover, substantial increase of pressure drop was recorded after each break of operation of the tested PHEx.
