    2018 JOURNAL OF NATURAL PRODUCTS

Illumination of the aromatic heptaene macrolide antifungal antibiotic candicicin D with UV light results in an isomerization of the molecule. The product formed after irradiation of the candicidin complex with UV light (λ=365nm), namely, iso-candicidin D, was isolated and subjected to 2D NMR studies, consisting of DQF-COSY, ROESY, TOCSY, HSQC, and HMBC experiments. The obtained spectral data unambiguously evidenced that iso-candicidin D was the alltrans isomer of the native antibiotic, and straightening of the heptaenic chromophore was the only light-induced structural change that occurred. Hence, iso-candicidin D was proclaimed to be a prototype of a novel class of polyene macrolide antifungal antibiotics: the all-trans aromatic heptaenes, containing a macrolide ring similar to that of amphotericin B.

Lignin-based carbon fibers (LCFs) from the renewable resource softwood kraft lignin were synthesized via oxidative thermostabilization of pure melt-spun lignin and carbonization at different temperatures from 1000°C to 1700°C. The resulting LCFs were characterized by tensile testing, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and confocal Raman spectroscopy. The microstructure is mainly amorphous carbon with some nanocrystalline domains. The strength and stiffness are inversely proportional to the carbonization temperature, while the LCFs carbonized at 1000°C exhibit a strength of 628 MPa and a stiffness of 37 GPa. Furthermore, the application potential of LCFs was evaluated as negative electrodes in a lithium-ion battery (LIB) by electrochemical cycling at different current rates in a half-cell setup. The capacity drops with the carbonization temperature and the LCFs carbonized at 1000°C have a capacity of 335 mAh g−1. All LCFs showed good cycling stability. Because of the mechanical integrity and conductivity of the LCFs, there is no need to apply current collectors, conductive additives or binders. The advantage is an increased gravimetric energy density compared to graphite, which is the most common negative electrode material. LCFs show a promising multifunctional behavior, including good mechanical integrity, conductivity and an ability to intercalate lithium for LIBs.

we address the well-posedness of the planar linearized equilibrium problem for homogenized pantographic lattices. To do so: (i) we introduce a class of subsets of anisotropic Sobolev’s space as the most suitable energy space E relative to assigned boundary conditions; (ii) we prove that the considered strain energy density is coercive and positive definite in E ; (iii) we prove that the set of placements for which the strain energy is vanishing (the so-called floppy modes) must strictly include rigid motions; (iv) we determine the restrictions on displacement boundary conditions which assure existence and uniqueness of linear static problems. The presented results represent one of the first mechanical applications of the concept of Anisotropic Sobolev space, initially introduced only on the basis of purely abstract mathematical considerations.

  • Linkages between services and manufacturing as a new channel for GVC growth: evidence from CEE countries
    • Aleksandra Kordalska
    • Magdalena Olczyk
    2018

The aim of this paper is to use a panel Granger causality test to verify the hypothesis of the existence of a causal relationship between forward linkages from domestic services to manufacturing and a country’s participation and position in GVCs in selected central and eastern European economies – the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia – for the period 2000-2014. Our results show that the Baltic countries (Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia) along with the Czech Republic strengthen their positions and participation in GVCs by having a strong relationship between the financial sector and manufacturing. Poland, Hungary and Slovakia reinforce their positions and participation in GVCs by means of strong linkages between transport services and manufacturing. We also find an importance of the reverse relationship, i.e. participation in GVCs by CEE economies and the positions they occupy influence the linkages between services and manufacturing, mainly in the transport sector and in professional, scientific and technical activities. The strength of the relationship is sensitive to the linkage measure used.

Biogenic amines (BAs) have been reported in a variety of foods, such as fish, meat, cheese, and wines. The formation of BAs in food by the microbial decarboxylation of amino acids can result in human allergic reactions, characterized by difficulty in breathing, rash, vomiting, and hypertension. Control measures to prevent biogenic amine formation in foods and/or reduce their levels should be considered. Therefore, monitoring of BAs in food samples with the application of analytical techniques is of high importance. This review is based on literature data from 2010 until today and refers to food samples and alcoholic beverages. The rationale of this study is to provide data for the occurrence of BAs in food and beverages samples and a comparison of the analytical techniques and challenges in liquid and solid matrices. Importantly, BAs can be used as future markers for quality and freshness of the food products and alcoholic beverages.

The footbridge in Radom is a suspended bridge of an interesting architectural form. The structure was de-signed for 4 kN/m2 of crowd loading. Dynamic calculations were not included in the design. The structure’s acceptance tests took place on the 14th of October 2016. The behaviour of the footbridge in static testing met the expectations. Unfortunately, as a result of dynamic tests, dangerous behaviour of the footbridge was revealed. A rhythmic jump test induced deck vibrations with an acceleration of 4.51 m/s2. For this reason, a newly built object has not been approved for use and the structure requires installation of additional damping devices. The article presents analyses of the load test design stage, describing performed tests and their re-sults, showing the comparison of theoretical and measured parameters and further indicating the improper dynamic behaviour which prevented the structure usage until the repair.

  • Load-carrying capacity of axially loaded concrete-filled steel tubular columns made of thin tubes
    • Marcin Abramski
2018 Pełny tekst Archives of Civil and Mechanical Engineering

An experimental investigation was conducted on 30 CFST columns. An influence of the following factors on load-carrying capacity of the investigated columns was analyzed: the column slenderness (l1 = 42, l2 = 27 and l3 = 15), the tube thickness (the reinforcement ratio was equal to 4% or 6%), the way of applying the load to CFST columns (through the concrete core or through the entire cross-section), the bond strength between a steel tube and a concrete core. The results of the experimental investigation let the author derive a practical method of determining load-bearing capacity of CFST columns. The Eurocode 4 provisions regulating composite steel and concrete structures design impose the minimum share of a steel tube in the cross-sectional area of a CFST column. This minimum share is the prerequisite for the Eurocode 4 to be applicable. It ranges from 0.5% to 6%. As the experimental research presented in the paper indicate, the CFST columns of such low reinforcement ratios can be also effective in carrying loads. The proposed method is a second order analysis based on stiffness, similarly as the calculation procedure for the ordinary reinforced concrete columns which is used in Eurocode 2. The experimental results prove the author's suggestion to be correct.

  • Local buckling of compressed flange of cold-formed channel members made of aluminum alloy
    • Marcin Kujawa
    • Czesław Szymczak
    2018

The paper deals with local buckling of a compressed single flange of thin-walled channel cold- formed columns and beams made of aluminum alloy. Material is described by means of the Ramberg-Osgood constitutive equation. Axial compression of the columns and beams undergoing bending is taken into consid- eration. A simple model of the member flange in the form a long beam elastically connected to the web is used to find the critical buckling stress. The governing differential equation is derived with the aid of the sta- tionary total potential energy principle. The tangent modulus theory is applied to find the critical buckling stress and buckling modes. Analytical formulas of the critical stress and buckling mode are positively verified by the FEM and FSM analysis of numerical examples.

  • Local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in dynamic mode of galvanic coupling
    • Łukasz Burczyk
    • Kazimierz Darowicki
    2018 ELECTROCHIMICA ACTA

A novel method that combines local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and mapping in dynamicmode is proposed. Method was validated over two galvanic couplings, namely zinc/copper and cad-mium/copper. Impedance spectrum response for all measuring points was obtained by means ofsimultaneous implementation of selected range of frequencies. Proposed method allows the measure-ment in a more time-efficient manner, at the same time providing extensive impedance characteristic. Moreover, the aspect of probe-to-sample distance was introduced. Furthermore, the inversion of theprobe-to-sample distance experiment direction allows for determination of approaching procedure forlocal impedance measurements (with support of theoretical calculations). Proposed method wascompared with standard LEIS measurement on system which undergoes rapid changes, giving resultsthat were not obtainable with standard method. This indicates that by applying dynamic measurements,it is possible to introduce additional variable into the investigated system, what should contribute tobroader application of local impedance measurements.

Jet impingement still is one of demanding cases regarding computational fluid dynamics, due to its highly turbulent behaviour, with occurrence of turbulent-laminar transition. Even recently developed methods exhibit some drawbacks – RANS based simulations lack accuracy, LES and DNS based ones require too much computational time. Hybrid methods also exist, but their development and validation is in progress. Nevertheless, CFD application can play major role in the investigation of jet impingement phenomena. While the flat surface impingement is widely discussed in the literature, there is lack of data regarding non-flat surfaces – the ones that might exist for example in the heat exchangers. In the following paper, the numerical simulation of both flat and non-flat surfaces single jet impingement is presented, with the aim of precise description of the turbulence models impact on the thermal and hydrodynamic results. Choice of turbulence model is crucial for sufficient calculation outcome. Only the complex analyses, shown in the article, including the turbulence and momentum budgets comparison between particular models, can reveal significant and meaningful differences.

Abstract— Imaging photoplethysmography has already been proved to be successful in short distance (below 1m). However, most of the real-life use cases of measuring vital signs require the system to work at longer distances, to be both more reliable and convenient for the user. The possible scenarios that system designers must have in mind include monitoring of the vital signs of residents in nursing homes, disabled people, who can’t move, constant support for people regardless of the performed activity (e.g. during sleeping), infants, etc. In this work we verified the possibility of remote pulse estimation at a distance above 5m. Additionally, we integrated the deep learning algorithm for person tracking and identification, even when facial features are not visible. In this way, we enabled the collection of user specific measurements to create personalized vital signs patterns and we provided the support for monitoring of multiple people using one video stream. The preliminary results showed that it is possible to accurately (RMSE < 2.8 beats per minute) extract pulse from visible light sequences acquired with a webcam at a distance of 6m after applying a proper image pre-processing algorithm.
