  • Evaluation of Professional Demands and Financial Reward Through the Perception of Police Managers
    • Beata Basińska
    • Izabela Wiciak
    2013 Internal Security

The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between job demands and salary in the subjective perception of mid-level police managers. An occupational stress model in which effort spent on job demands are not balanced by the received reward, was adopted. The study comprised 51 police officers (4 women). The partial least squares method was used for the analysis, and the SmartPLS 2.0 program was applied. The income and salary received were appropriate in the relation to operational demands. In contrast, organizational demands were not balanced by appropriate income and salary for one-third of the mid-level police managers. Testing the theoretical model revealed that organizational demands significantly explained 14% of the variance in received salary . Improving the efficiency of management and work organization can lead to an increased sense of adequacy of the financial rewards among police mid-level managers.

2013 Pełny tekst TransNav - The International Journal on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation

The paper focuses on a comparison of different positioning methods provided by free and open source software (FOSS) package called RTKLIB. The RTKLIB supports real‐time and post‐processed positioning. The most important modes of operation tested by the authors are Kinematic, Static, Fixed and Precise Point Positioning (PPP). The data for evaluation were obtained from low‐cost Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver. The tested receiver was based on the u‐bloxʹs LEA‐6T GNSS module. This receiver provides different types of information including raw carrier phase measurements. It gives the possibility for centimeter‐level precision of positioning. As the supporting source of data ASG‐EUPOS system was used. ASG‐EUPOS is a Polish network of GNSS reference stations providing the real‐time corrections and post processing services for the entire territory of Poland.

    2013

An experiment conducted to validate possibility of use virtual bass synthesis (VBS) algorithm in a portable computer is presented. The subjective listening tests based on the procedure of pairwise comparison between VBS, based on the so-called missing fundamental phenomenon, and standard bass boost technique are employed. The evaluation was carried out in two types of conditions: in a professional listening room and employing an ultrabook to play back the sounds. As it is indicated by the results, the proposed technique proved the possibility of rendering bass-related components in audio signals in a better way than the standard bass boost technique.

    • Andrzej Szuwarzyński
2013 Pełny tekst Metody Ilościowe w Badaniach Ekonomicznych

Flexicurity is a policy of flexible and secure labour market. It has been the subject of many analyses, however, a coherent evaluation methodology is difficult to specify. The purpose of this paper is to propose a Data Envelopment Analysis based model for the evaluation of the efficiency of flexicurity implementation in OECD countries. The results will be used to create the ranking of countries, to determine changes in time, and to identify the reasons for inefficiency. On top of that, it will be possible to formulate recommendations for decision makers.

  • Evaluation of the usefulness and optimization of the separation conditions in Empty Column Gas Chromatography (EC-GC)
    • Grzegorz Boczkaj
    • Marian Antoni Kamiński
    2013 Camera Separatoria

  • Evolution of artificial single-cell organisms foraging for resources in a 3-dimensional environment

    2013

Foraging for resources is a simple cognitive task that even one-celled biological organisms can ac- complish. We present an Artificial Life system in which artificial unicellular organisms (animats) forage for food in a 3-dimensional simulated liquid environment. The movement of animats is controlled by evolving artificial gene regulatory networks encoded in linear genomes. When an animat consumes enough food, it produces offspring with a genome into which mutations are introduced. We show that in such a system – in which reproduction with mutation is coupled with competition for limited re- sources – efficient foraging (chemotaxis) evolves. We hope that our system (once the environmental conditions are made more complex) will allow for the evolution of more complex cognitive abilities, and controllers with possible applications in swarm robotics and underwater robotics.

  • Evolution of End-User Participation in IT Projects.
    • Marcin Sikorski
    2013

This chapter is aimed at presenting a review of evolutionary design paradigms which determine the end-user’s role in IT (Information Technology) projects across recent decades. This review covers different perspectives starting from technology-oriented sequential software development lifecycles, through user-centred approaches, ending finally in contemporary service design approaches supported by e-business and social media. Finally, the chapter discusses the need for “soft skills” required from the designers who wish to apply the service-relevant perspective to their IT projects. Conclusions cover novelty aspects of the designer-user interaction in service-relevant design paradigms and the impact of new design paradigms on human creativity and innovation.

  • Evolutionary Ship Track Planning within Traffic Separation Schemes – Evaluation of Individuals
    • Rafał Szłapczyński
2013 Pełny tekst TransNav - The International Journal on Marine Navigation and Safety of Sea Transportation

The paper presents an extended version of the author’s Evolutionary Sets of Safe Ship Trajectories method. The method plans safe tracks of all ships involved in an encounter including speed reduction manoeuvres, if necessary, and taking into account Rule 10 of COLREGS, which specifies ships’ behaviour within Traffic Separation Schemes governed by IMO. The paper focuses on the evaluation phase of the evolutionary process and shows how fitness function is designed to compare various possible tracks as well as to assess the quality of a final solution. The impact of the fitness function on the method’s results is illustrated by examples.

  • Evolving gene regulatory networks controlling foraging strategies of prey and predators in an artificial ecosystem
    • Joachim Erdei
    • Michał Joachimczak
    • Borys Wróbel
    2013

Co-evolution of predators and prey is an example of an evolutionary arms race, leading in nature to selective pressures in positive feedback. We introduce here an artificial life ecosystem in which such positive feedback can emerge. This ecosystem consists of a 2-dimensional liquid environment and animats controlled by evolving artificial gene regulatory networks encoded in linear genomes. The genes in the genome encode chemical products which regulate other genes, sense the environment (the scent of food, prey and predators), control the animat’s movement, and its foraging strategy. The animats can switch multiple times in their life between two foraging strategies (with different metabolic costs): the predators can derive food from the prey, the prey just from food that diffuses in the environment. When an animat consumes enough food (or prey), it produces an offspring with a mutated genome. Mutations introduce variation into the population, and this diversity together with selective pressures leads to the evolution of control for diverse foraging strategies in an ecosystem that can support hundreds of individuals.

    • Bożena Kostek
    • Andrzej Czyżewski
2013 Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing

The main objective of the chapter is to present the methodology and results of examining various classifiers (Nearest Neighbor-like algorithm with non-nested generalization (NNge), Naive Bayes, C4.5 (J48), Random Tree, Random Forests, Artificial Neural Networks (Multilayer Perceptron), Support Vector Machine (SVM) used for static gesture recognition. A problem of effective gesture recognition is outlined in the context of the system based on a camera and a multimedia projector enabling a user to process sound in audio mixing domain by hand gestures. The image processing method and hand shape parameterization method are described in relation to the specificity of the input and data classifiers. The SVM classifier is considered the optimum choice for the engineered gesture-based sound mixing system.

  • EXPERIENCE-ORIENTED SMART EMBEDDED SYSTEM
    • Edward Szczerbicki
    • Cesar Sanin
    2013

The Experience-Oriented Smart Embedded System (EOSES) is proposed as a new technological platform providing a common knowledge management approach that allows mass embedded systems for experiential knowledge capturing, storage, involving, and sharing. Knowledge in the EOSES is represented as SOEKS, and organized as Decisional DNA. The platform is mainly based on conceptual principles from Embedded Systems and Knowledge Management. The objective behind this research is to offer large-scale support for intelligent, autonomous, and coordinated KM on various embedded systems. Several conceptual elements of this research have been implemented in testing prototypes, and the experimental results that were obtained show that the EOSES platform can provide active knowledge management to different embedded systems, and it can also enable various systems to learn from their daily operations in many different fields to gather valuable knowledge, assist decision making, reduce human workers’ workload, and improve the system itself. As a result, the EOSES has great potential for meeting today’s demands for embedded systems, and providing a universe knowledge management platform for mass autonomous mechanisms.

    2013

Observation of the underwater area is the element of general trend which primary purpose is to protect and enhance the safety of the selected region. The aim of the paper is to present the acoustic characteristics of typical objects floating on the surface or under the water, which constitute some knowledge on how to detect these objects. Create a catalog of acoustic signatures and acoustic images of objects mostly floating under water can be an important contribution to the efforts to increase the safety of water areas and located in the vicinity of the nearby public objects. This is part of the overall security policy with respect primarily to the type of terrorist threats and sabotage but not only. During research passive detection acoustic methods (linear hydrophone array) and active like side scan sonar where use with an emphasis on pontoon with engine and diver with air cylinders tried to pass through the protected area. Results of detection will be presented and discussed.

  • EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF CONNECTION BETWEEN OBJECT-ORIENTED METRICS AND SOFTWARE CHANGEABILITY
    • Tomasz Sanner
    • Andrzej Czyżewski
    2013

For the purpose of video surveillance software quality assessment in this work the ISO/IEC-9126 norm was used with a particular focus on maintainability of the software system. The paper presents a study on the connection between software metrics derived from the static analysis of the source code and changeability of the video surveillance software system. It is shown that meeting requirements of software quality metrics may result in reducing the time needed to introduce changes to the software demanded because of some changes in environmental requirements and specifications.

This study investigates the contact temperatures caused by frictional heating of sliding parallel pairs. In this case the materials studied are a PTFE composite in contact with a high carbon steel plate. These materials are commonly used for industrial applications, in particular as the main contacting components within a scroll expander system. The expected contact temperature values are important to be quantified in order to predict failure mechanisms associated with excessive thermal effects caused by sliding friction. A rational and coherent interpretation of the thermal effects on the actual tribological contact is presented. Contact temperatures are monitored continuously using a high-precision infrared thermal imaging technique with a systematic variation in surface roughness of the high carbon steel material. These surface temperatures are investigated as a function of the friction coefficient, the sliding velocity and the applied load while the most influential parameter for the temperature rise is determined. Analytical results using conventional mathematical methodology are also produced. The analytical and experimental findings are then compared indicating interesting correlations within the macro-and micro-surface temperature regimes and the experimental conditions. Microscopic observations show that thermal effects can seriously affect fibres durability while transfer films formed across the steel counterpart can be beneficial for the operation of scroll systems under specific roughness and test conditions.

We present an experimental scheme based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion to produce multiple-photon pairs in maximally entangled polarization states using an arrangement of two type-I nonlinear crystals. By introducing correlated polarization noise in the paths of the generated photons we prepare mixed-entangled states whose properties illustrate fundamental results obtained recently in quantum information theory, in particular those concerning bound entanglement and privacy.
