  • A method for preliminary estimation of the length of midship body block to be inserted during ship’s conversion
    • Jan Michalski
2017 Pełny tekst Polish Maritime Research

The paper presents a method for preliminary estimation of the length of the midship body block, which inserted in the original hull, increases the deadweight of the ship in line with a required quantity. The method may be useful for establishing the scope of conversion to better adjust the ship for transportation tasks. The problem is formulated by using a mathematical model so selected that its solution, under set of assumptions, is obtained in a closed analytical form. The presented method can be useful for application to pre-investment analysis of the ship conversion costs and functional profits

  • A method of determining and visualizing safe motion parameters of a ship navigating in restricted waters
    • Rafał Szłapczyński
    • Joanna Szłapczyńska
    2017 OCEAN ENGINEERING

The paper presents a method of displaying ship collision avoidance information which is based on an unconventional Collision Threat Parameters Area (CTPA) technique. The solution presented here extends CTPA's functionality from past works by supporting navigation in restricted waters and handling ship domains analytically instead of numerically. It visualizes potential navigational threats as well as possible collision avoidance manoeuvres. The proposed method provides three types of information: targets' motion parameters (typical for target tracking), combinations of own course and speed which collide with those targets (typical for CTPA displays) and combinations of own course and speed which collide with stationary obstacles (new elements). Optionally it is also possible to display only manoeuvres compliant with International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) for the present visibility conditions. A superposition of all these types of data enables a navigator to quickly choose an efficient collision avoidance manoeuvre. The paper includes a description of the proposed visualization technique as well as examples of visualised data for encounter situations, which demonstrate the proposed method's usefulness.

  • A method of measuring RLC components for microcontroller systems
    • Zbigniew Czaja
    2017 Pełny tekst Przegląd Elektrotechniczny

A new method of measuring RLC components for microcontroller systems dedicated to compact smart impedance sensors based on a direct sensor-microcontroller interface is presented. In the method this direct interface composed of a reference resistor connected in series with the tested sensor impedance is stimulated by a square wave generated by the microcontroller, and then its voltage response is sampled by an internal ADC of the microcontroller. The obtained set of voltage samples is used to determine values of the sensor model impedance components.

  • A Method of Object Re-identiciation Applicable to Multicamera Surveillance Systems
    • Karol Lisowski
    • Andrzej Czyżewski
    2017

The paper addresses some challenges pertaining to the methods for tracking of objects in multi-camera systems. The tracking methods related to a single Field of Vision (FOV) are quite different from inter-camera tracking, especially in case of non-overlapping FOVs. In this case, the processing is directed to determine the probability of a particular object’s identity seen in a pair of cameras in the presence of places non-observed by any camera, thus an object can disappear in one observed region and then re-appear in another one. A methodology for evaluation of the introduced re-identification method is presented in the paper. Problems related to the preparation of the ground-truth database and to the impact of a single-camera tracking on the efficiency of the re-identification algorithm are discussed.

  • A method to assess transverse vibration energy of ship propeller shaft for diagnostic purposes
    • Zbigniew Korczewski
2017 Pełny tekst Polish Maritime Research

The article discusses a key problem of ship propulsion system vibration diagnostics, which concerns assessing this part of mechanical energy transmitted from the main engine to the ship propeller which is dissipated due to propeller shaft vibration. A simplified calculation model is proposed which allows the total energy of the generated torsional vibration to be assessed from the shaft deflection amplitude measured at the mind-span point between the supports. To verify the developed model, pilot tests were performed on the laboratory rotational mechanical system test rig. In those tests, cyclic bending moment was applied to a unified (cylindrical) material sample, which modelled, at an appropriate scale, structural and functional properties of a real propeller shaft.

    2017 Analytical Methods

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of artistic paints produced in the 19th century by a French art materials supplier Richard Ain`es. Improved mild extraction with hydrofluoric acid enabled the observation of intact organic dyes. Reversed-phase liquid chromatography with diode-array and mass spectrometry detection was utilised for the identification of 35 dyes present in yellow and red paint samples, and in selected plant extracts. The developed analytical method allowed more efficient separation of several isomeric flavonoid and anthraquinone dye components of the paint samples. Persian berries and weld were identified as the dye sources in the yellow paint samples. The red oil paint had been coloured with the madder lake-type plant. Studies of dye extracts of the historical samples show the presence of uncommon dye components (quercetin-O-rhamnoside-glucuronide and rhamnasin-O-rhamnosideglucoside) that could enhance this identification. The paint samples were additionally analyzed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). Aluminum, Sn, Zn, Ca, Cu, S, Si, and K were detected confirming the presence of aluminium hydrate and tin salts as carriers, as well as chalk, and other components used during the production of these paints. The SEM with the BSE detector images revealed the homogenous texture of finely ground lake pigments

One-pot synthesis of optically active 1,4-disubstituted-3-carbamoyl-azetidinones from 5-[(N-arylamino)- (hydroxyl)methylene]-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxa-4,6-diones and chiral aldimines is achieved via thermal generation of carbamoyl ketenes and subsequent [2+2] cycloaddition. Three possible chiral induction approaches were tested and (R)-(+)-1-phenylethylamine was confirmed as the best chiral auxiliary. Among the four possible diastereoisomers, only two with significant excess of one were formed

  • A new assay based on terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism of homocitrate synthase gene fragments for Candida species identification

2017 Pełny tekst JOURNAL OF APPLIED GENETICS

Candida sp. have been responsible for an increasing number of infections, especially in patients with immunodeficiency. Species specific differentiation of the Candida sp. is difficult in routine diagnosis. This identification can have a highly significant association in therapy and prophylaxis. This work has shown a new application of terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (t-RFLP) method in molecular identification of six species of Candida, which are the most common cause of fungal infections. Specific for fungi homocitrate synthase gene was chosen as a molecular target for amplification. The use of three restriction enzymes DraI, RsaI and BglII for amplicons digestions can generate species specific fluorescence labeled DNA fragments profiles, which were used to determine the diagnostic algorithm. Designed method can be a cost-efficient high-throughput molecular fingerprinting technique for identification of six clinically important Candida species.

  • A newly-developed model for predicting cutting power during wood sawing with circular saw blades
    • Kazimierz Orłowski
    • Tomasz Ochrymiuk
    2017 Pełny tekst Maderas-Ciencia y Tecnologia

In the classical approach, cutting forces and cutting power in sawing processes of orthotropic materials such as wood are generally calculated on the basis of the specific cutting resistance kc (cutting force per unit area of cut). For every type of sawing kinematics (frame saws, band saws and circular sawing machines) different empirical values of specific cutting resistance kc have to be applied. It should be emphasised that sources in the scientific literature and handbooks do not provide any information about wood provenance, nor about cutting conditions in which cutting resistance had been determined. In analyses of sawing processes in which the offcut is formed by shear, Atkins’s ideas that all cutting forms a branch of elastoplastic fracture mechanics can be applied. Thanks to this modern approach it was possible to reveal, using experimental results data of fracture toughness and shear yield stresses of Polish pine (Pinus sylvestris), the significant effect of the raw material provenance (source of wood) on cutting power. In the common model for circular sawing machine kinematics, which is similar to metal milling, the sum of all uncut chip thicknesses of the all the teeth simultaneously engaged represented the mean uncut chip thickness. In this work predictions of the newly-developed model for the circular sawing machine are presented. In the model, beside uncut chip thicknesses changes, appropriate changes in shear yield stress and toughness with tooth/grain orientation have been taken into account. The conducted analyses have demonstrated that values of RMS of cutting power obtained with the new developed model are slightly larger than experimental values. On the other hand computed values of cutting power with the use of the mean uncut chip thicknesses in the model are a bit lower from the empirical one.

2017 Pełny tekst JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS AND APPLICATIONS

We prove that a stochastic (Markov) operator S acting on a Schatten class C_1 satisfies the Noether condition S'(A) = A and S'(A^2) = A^2, where A is a Hermitian bounded linear operator on a complex Hilbert space H, if and only if, S(E(G)XE(G)) = E(G)S(X)E(G) holds true for every Borel subset G of the real line R, where E(G) denotes the orthogonal projection coming from the spectral resolution of A. Similar results are obtained for stochastic one-parameter contiuous semigroups.

2017 Pełny tekst Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences-Technical Sciences

The paper deals with numerical simulations of wave propagation in reinforced concrete for damage detection purposes. A novel formulation of a 3D spectral element was proposed. The reinforcement modelled as the truss spectral element was embedded in the 3D solid spectral finite element. Numerical simulations have been conducted on cuboid concrete specimens reinforced with two steel bars. Different degradation models were considered to study the real behaviour of bended beams.

    2017 SENSORS AND ACTUATORS B-CHEMICAL

Silica xerogel surface grafted with aminopropyl (PrNH2) groups was additionally treated by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant and ascorbic acid (asc) in alkaline solution. This material symbolized as SiO2-PrNH2-CTAB/asc, proved to be a stable luminescent material, exhibited an emission band peaked at 393 nm under excitation wavelength 335 nm. Time evolution of the band intensity suggests changes of defect concentration on the silica surface owing to modification reaction with alkaline mixture of CTAB and asc. After this treatment the material could serve as a luminescence recognition element revealing selectively Cu²⁺ cations in presence of other metal ions in solutions. On the other hand, emission spectra excited by wavelength 236 nm confirmed selectively presence of Pb²⁺ and simultaneously Cu²⁺ cations in aqueous solutions. In this way the luminescent material could play the role of INHIBIT and YES logic gates for both the mentioned cations. A novel luminescent chemical sensor for the determination of Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ ions.

    2017 COMPOSITES PART B-ENGINEERING

A novel sandwich composite footbridge is presented in the paper, as an example of practical application of laminated composites in civil engineering. The in situ static load tests of the footbridge before its acceptation for exploitation are shown and discussed. The results are compared with the corresponding ones from a numerical equivalent single layer model of the sandwich structure created within the framework of finite element method. The numerical solutions, are slightly higher than the measured in situ ones. Hence, it is concluded that the chosen method of structural analysis is efficient enough to recreate static behavior of the bridge and thus it is accepted for application in civil engineering.

  • A novel sensor for measuring temperature profile during the thermoablation
    • Adam Bujnowski
    • Jerzy Wtorek
    2017 Pełny tekst

Abstract — A novel approach for monitoring a temperature distribution inside a tissue during thermoablation is presented in the paper. A thermal profile is measured using a set of serially connected thermistors each bypassed by a capacitor. This technique allows a two-wire and simultaneous multi- point measurements using a multi-frequency measurement of electrical impedance. It is shown that application signals of appropriately selected frequency allows simultaneous measure- ment of temperature at five distinct points. This technique can be utilized in the assisting of a thermoablation process, and in other applications based on resistive or capacitive sensors.
