  • Instantaneous Heating and Cooling Caused by Periodic or Aperiodic Sound of Any Characteristic Duration in a Gas with Vibrational Relaxation
    • Anna Perelomova
2017 Pełny tekst ACTA ACUSTICA UNITED WITH ACUSTICA

Thermodynamic relaxation of internal degrees of a molecule's freedom in a gas occurs with some characteristic time. This makes wave processes in a gas behave differently depending on the ratio of characteristic duration of perturbations and the relaxation time. In particular, generation of the secondary non-wave modes by intense sound in a nonlinear flow dependens on frequency. These kinds of interaction are considered in this study. The exact links between perturbations inside every type of a fluid's motion (modes) and resulting weakly nonlinear equations for interacting modes are derived. These equations are instantaneous and hence are valid for pulsed excitation. Some kind of energy inflow makes a gas with excited degrees of oscillatory molecule's freedom acoustically active. That leads to anomalous acoustic cooling of a gas. The impact of standard viscosity, thermal conductivity, and dependence of the power of energy inflow on temperature is briefly discussed.

The paper concerns the problem of evaluation of stationarity of carbon steel corrosion in 1M HCl. Comparison of corrosion rate with addition of corrosion inhibitor to the reference measurement is the most often used way of evaluating inhibitor efficiency. Such an approach is valid only if corrosion rate is a stationary process. Two complementary techniques were used simultaneously: volumetric analysis of evolved hydrogen and instantaneous impedance spectroscopy monitoring. Changes of the electrode surface area and chemical composition have a major impact on the dynamics of both cathodic and anodic processes. On the base obtained results, authors claim that the stationarity of the process determined most often on the base of corrosion potential is ineffective and insufficient.

    2017 Pełny tekst HYDROACOUSTICS

The knowledge of the location, shape and other characteristics of spatial objects in the coastal areas has a significant impact on the functioning of ports, shipyards, and other waterinfrastructure facilities, both offshore and inland. Therefore, measurements of the underwater part of the waterside zone are taken, which means the bottom of the water and other underwater objects (e.g. breakwaters, docks, etc.), and objects above the water, such as the above-water part of the waterside, breakwaters, hydraulic constructions, and other objects of the waterside infrastructure. In this paper, project results of an integrated acoustical-optical system for inventory of hydrotechnical objects are presented. The aim of the project was to elaborate a mobile underwater scanning system which could be applied in various works that require precise, detailed and coherent, underwater and above-water measurement, especially in areas associated with surveying, inspection and monitoring of objects in coastal areas.

2017 Pełny tekst PRACE NAUKOWE UNIWERSYTETU EKONOMICZNEGO WE WROCŁAWIU

The European Commission put a growing emphasis on the territorial and integrated app roach to policy support addressed in the frame of regional policy. In a special way this process refers to cities along with their functional environment. In Poland the National Spatial Development Concept 2030 has introduced the concept of functional areas, among others – Functional Urban Areas (FUAs). There is also a new tool – Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI) – for FUAs in the EU programming perspective of 2014-2020. The scope of the article includes FUAs of regional and sub-regional centers in Pomeranian Voivodeship. The objectives of this paper are: to identify the diversity of projects planned for FUAs; to identify factors that integrate the projects mentioned above. The following main methods have been applied: analysis of documents; typology of projects proposed for implementation concerning their subject and integrating factors. Territorial agreements basing on regional operational program were a formula of development planning in the researched FUAs, more liberal than the formula of ITI. In 95% projects integrating factors can be identified (as hypothesis) and classified. The projects relate to many fields, the most to energy efficiency, health and transport.

  • Integrated dewatering and stabilization system as an environmentally friendly technology in sewage sludge management in Poland

    2017 ECOLOGICAL ENGINEERING

Sludge treatment reed beds (STRBs) are an environmentally friendly technology which provides integrated dewatering and stabilization of sewage sludge. STRBs do not require the use of chemicals to improve the dewatering process. STRB is both, a low-emission and a low-energy-consuming method. After the stabilization process, sludge is characterized by the chemical composition similar to that of humus. The aim of the paper is to present the comprehensive data from Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Gniewino (Poland) where the sewage sludge is dewatered and stabilized in a STRB. Research and literature reports indicate that sewage sludge treated in STRB is dewatered, which results in an increase in the dry matter (dm) (from 1.1% to 15.5%) and stabilization due to the decrease in the content of the organic matter (from 71.2% of the dm to 52.4% of the dm). Likewise, thanks to the high concentration of nutrients (TKN concentration − 3.64% of the dm and P concentration − 3.54% of the dm) and the low concentration of heavy metals (below permissible values for the agricultural use) after the time of stabilization, safe and valuable product can be recycled to the environment. Reject water (RW) generated during this process has relatively stable and much better properties in comparison to these which are generated in high technologies for sludge treatment. Thus, recycling the RW from the slugde dewatering in STRB represents a very low internal pollution and should not alert the treatment proceses of wastewater.

  • Integrating Art into Places in Transition - Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston as a Case Study
    • Magdalena Rembeza
2017 Pełny tekst IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering

Among the many projects realized in public spaces, some are truly unique – and these are the ones that build the identity of a place. The aim of this paper is to examine how integrating art and cultural strategies into public space can enhance and reinforce the sense of a place. Particular attention is devoted to urban spaces that we call “places in transition”, where public art improves the city’s imaginative capacity, enlivens neighbourhoods, and sparks civic exchange. Research methods include multidisciplinary literature studies and a detailed case study of the Rose Kennedy Greenway (RKG) – a contemporary urban park in Boston, USA, intended to stitch together the various neighbourhoods surrounding downtown. The Greenway is also a place in transition, to which the Conservancy introduces innovative and contemporary art through temporary exhibitions, engaging people in experiences, interactions and dialogue with art. The five-year Public Art Strategy was supported by Fund for the Arts, a public art program of the New England Foundation for the Arts. The main vision of the project is to amplify the Greenway’s unique characteristic through art that is connective, innovative, and celebratory. There are the two main types of projects within the Public Art Strategy for the RKG: short-term projects called “Platforms” and long-term projects called “Magnets”. The particular conceptual framework is being developed to guide proposals: connection, interactivity, civic dialogue, ecology, and the environment. The article examines the case and analyses the important issues related to implementing art into a public space such as reimagining places, short-term and long-term artistic interventions, arts and cultural programming.

  • Interaction Between Storm Water Conduit And Surface Flow For Urban Flood Inundation Modelling
    • Jakub Hakiel
    • Michał Szydłowski
2017 Pełny tekst International Journal of Sustainable Development and Planning

Rapid development of urban areas always comes with great side effects. One of them is the occurrence of urban floods. Growth of impervious surfaces in cities leads to increasing run-off values. This together with difficulties connected with sewage modernization in cities marks urban inundations as being one of the most important issues concerning urban water. Accurate prediction of a phenomenon is difficult as it is highly dependent on local conditions and the quality of available data about them. A most recent approach to modelling urban flooding involves a detailed description of the interaction between storm water sewage flow modelling and surface flow modelling. In this paper we will describe a numerical model of urban inundation that is being used to analyse the phenomenon, which consists of 1D storm water flow model (explicit McCormack scheme) and 1D surface flow model (diffusive wave). But before that laboratory tests describing the interaction between used models will be introduced. We will try to evaluate how different surface flow conditions affect interaction and find out if there is an easy way to implement it in coupled numerical modelling of large-scale urban areas inundations. Because tests are still being conducted and further investigation of phenomenon is being done, the conclusions are only preliminary and should be treated as a guideline for future work.

Headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC GCeTOFMS) identified 19 and quantified 6 monoterpenes in gooseberries, blueberries and cranberries. As a protein model human serum albumin (HSA) was used in interaction with terpenes. Specific binding of terpenes to HSA under the physiological conditions was a result of the formation of a complex. In order to determine the synergism of polyphenols and volatiles in some berries binding properties with HSA were evaluated by 3D-fluorometry and molecular docking. Extracts of polyphenols and monoterpenes, using various ethanol mixtures with water, and their antioxidant properties were determined by two radical scavenging assays (ABTS and CUPRAC). The studied extracts interacted with HSA with different binding affinities which were directly related to their antioxidant properties. The highest binding abilities were in blueberries and g-terpinene. Among the six terpenes, the highest scoring compound was identified as g-terpinene. This study provides useful information for the future designing of health food on the basic of polyphenols and volatile substances.

Purpose - Our aim is to show how individuals perceive the quality of intercultural interactions at work in multinational subsidiaries, and to address the question of what actually prevails in their accounts, i.e. ‘the dark side’ or ‘the bright side’. Design/methodology/approach - We report the findings from five subsidiaries located in Poland and interviews with 68 employees of these companies. Findings - The ‘bright side’ dominated the interviewees’ accounts. The phenomenon of high social identity complexity or common ingroup identity can help explain the findings. The results also shed some new light on the associations between the context of subsidiaries and the perception of the quality of intercultural interactions.Originality/value – The accounts of intercultural interactions are analyzed to illuminate some significant foundations of how individuals perceive such interactions. The study provides a qualitative lens and highlights the positive approach to intercultural interactions. It may redress the imbalance in prior research and satisfy the need for positive cross-cultural scholarship.

    2017

Power network resilience is increasingly dependent on communication networks. Besides traditional generation, power networks need to accommodate increasingly high penetration levels of dispersed micro generation, mostly based on renewable sources, and increasing and challenging demand, such as electric vehicles. At the same time the deployment of enabling technologies throughout the power grid makes available new demand resources and storage capacity. These resources have to be jointly managed for efficient and resilient operation. Therefore a resilient communication network is mandatory for the smart control of these different resources. Communication networks in turn also rely on the power networks in spite of some power backup that they may have. This interdependence is especially critical in bad weather conditions where both networks can be severely affected, even more when they strongly depend on each other. This work describes ongoing research related with the interdependence between both networks regarding resilience, cascading failure effects, applicable models and simulation techniques.

  • Internacjonalizacja szkolnictwa wyższego a kwestia jakości kształcenia i obsługi studentów - przykład Politechniki Gdańskiej
    • Magdalena Popowska
    2017
