  • Identification of continuous systems - Practical issues of insensitivity to perturbations

    In this paper the issue of continuous systems estimation, insensitive to certain perturbations, is discussed. Such an approach has rational advantages, especially when robust schemes are used to assist a target system responsible for industrial diagnostics. This requires that estimated model parameters are generated on-line, and their values are reliable and to a great extent accurate. Practical hints are suggested to challenge the consistency problem of estimates. In particular, the technique of instrumental variables can improve the asymptotic behavior of estimators. With a weighting mechanism, in turn, tracking the time-varying parameters of non-stationary processes is realistic. Yet, evident insensitivity to destructive outliers in the measurement data follows from the implemented estimation routine in the sense of the least sum of absolute errors. Finally, premises for a proper selection of excitation signals, as well as the directions of further research summarize the paper.

    This paper describes cases of poisoning caused by new psychoactive substances such as: 25BNBOMe (2-(4-bromo-2,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-N-[(2-methoxyphenyl)methyl]ethanamine) and 4-CMC (1-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(methylamino)-1-propanone). The analytical procedure includes rapid and selective method for the extraction and determination of 4-CMC and 25B-NBOMe in blood samples using UPLC–MS/MS technique. To the best of our knowledge,this is thefirst report,thatinvolves a fully validated method for quantification of new-designer drug – 4-CMC in postmortem blood samples. The biological material was also analyzed with the use of routine analytical methods: immunochemical techniques, gas chromatography with flame ionization detection and gas chromatography with electron impact mass spectrometry. The results of real samples analyses correspond to possible toxicological effects: death resulting from 25B-NBOMe - mediated hallucinations (661 ng/mL of 25B-NBOMe and 0.887 ng/mL of 4- CMC), fatal overdose of 25B-NBOMe and 4-CMC (66.5 ng/mL of 25B-NBOMe and 2.14 ng/mL of 4-CMC) and non-fatal intoxication of these drugs (38.4 ng/mL of 25B NBOMe and 0.181 ng/mL of 4-CMC). Additionally, O-demethylathed O, O-bis-demethylathed and glucuronidated metabolites of 25B-NBOMe in biological specimens were detected.


  • Identification of Risk Factors for Collisions Involving Cyclists Based on Gdansk Example

    The role of pedestrian and bicycle traffic in Poland has growing trend. The comprehensive traffic study, conducted in Gdansk in 2016, has confirmed the increase in the number of cyclists and their share in the modal split. Therefore, it is particularly important to ensure the safety of this group of unprotected road users. Only in 2015 on the roads of Gdansk occurred 93 accidents (excluding collisions) involving cyclists. As a result, 101 people were injured, including nine seriously and 3 people killed. The study aim was to identify risk factors for collisions involving cyclists based on data of accidents reported to the police. The following factors were analysed: the conditions for the drivers on the road (speed limits of, surface conditions), conditions for cyclists (cycling infrastructure, traffic management), external conditions (time of the year, time of the day, weather conditions), conditions organizational (type of intersection, traffic light) as well as the social aspects – the behaviour of all users.

    The paper presents selected issues on the European UPGRID grant implemented by a consortium of companies from seven European states, including from Poland, on the monitoring and control of low voltage grid using measurement pre-registered data by smart AMI meters. The paper focuses on the issue of lack of information on the assignment of communal meters to individual phases.

    W pracy zidentyfikowano 20 nowych rejonów zmiennych w genomach gronkowca złocistego przydatnych do badań epidemiologicznych metodą PCR. Teoretyczna analiza 35 genomów metodą PCR z udziałem 20 nowych regionów zmiennych pozwoliła na uzyskanie większej liczby genotypów w porównaniu do dwóch metod referencyjnych: REA-PFGE z udziałem endonukleazy SmaI oraz metody MLVA z udziałem 16 rejonów zmiennych.

Dostępne standardowe metody laboratoryjne zazwyczaj wymagają pobrania z konstrukcji próbek materiału do badań, co nie zawsze jest możliwe. W artykule zaprezentowano alternatywne metody oceny wymienionych cech materiałowych z zastosowaniem badań nieniszczących możliwych do wykonania bez pośrednio na obiekcie

  • If Gravity is Geometry, is Dark Energy just Arithmetic?

    Arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), as well as the calculus they imply, are non-unique. The examples of four-dimensional spaces, R^4 and (−L/2,L/2)^4, are considered where different types of arithmetic and calculus coexist simultaneously. In all the examples there exists a non-Diophantine arithmetic that makes the space globally Minkowskian, and thus the laws of physics are formulated in terms of the corresponding calculus. However, when one switches to the ‘natural’ Diophantine arithmetic and calculus, the Minkowskian character of the space is lost and what one effectively obtains is a Lorentzian manifold. I discuss in more detail the problem of electromagnetic fields produced by a pointlike charge. The solution has the standard form when expressed in terms of the non-Diophantine formalism. When the ‘natural’ formalsm is used, the same solution looks as if the fields were created by a charge located in an expanding universe, with nontrivially accelerating expansion. The effect is clearly visible also in solutions of the Friedman equation with vanishing cosmological constant. All of this suggests that phenomena attributed to dark energy may be a manifestation of a miss-match between the arithmetic employed in mathematical modeling, and the one occurring at the level of natural laws. Arithmetic is as physical as geometry.

    Przedstawiono propozycje oceny technologiczności konstrukcji uchwytów obróbkowych specjalnych. Przyjęto ilościowe kryteria oceny cech użytkowych i technologicznych, głównie w aspekcie montażu oprzyrządowania. Podano przykład oceny w przypadku uchwytów wiertarskich. Zaproponowana metoda może być szczególnie przydatna podczas projektowania obiektów technicznych przez mniej doświadczonych konstruktorów lub w procesie kształcenia inżynierskiego mechaników technologów.

    Приезды граждан Республики Беларусь в Польшу стали возможными благодаря подписанию соответствующих международных договоров, а также билатеральных соглашений, заключенных между Польшей и Беларусью. Белорусские иммигранты были одной из наиболее многочисленных групп граждан из стран бывшего СССР в Польше после украинцев. Согласно данным Главного статистического управления, можно выделить следующие группы иммигрантов, временно находящихся в Польше: 1) имеющие вид на жительство и проживание на определенный срок; 2) имеющие разрешение на работу; 3) студенты; 4) беженцы. Самыми многочисленными группами были лица, которые получили согласие на временное проживание и разрешение на работу. После ратификации Польшей Женевской конвенции от 1951 г. и Нью-Йоркского протокола от 1967 г., касающихся статуса беженцев, количество беларусов, старающихся принять такой статус, незначительно увеличилось, но только немногие из них были охвачены программой поддержки или получили согласие на допустимое проживание. Иммигранты из Беларуси, проживающие в Польше, для поляков не обременительны, редко входят в конфликт с действующим законодательством, а их пребывание а Польше не является проблемой для польских граждан.


  • Immunogenic and protective activity of recombinant chimeric Toxoplasma gondii proteins

    Toxoplasmosis, one of the most common parasitic invasions worldwide, may pose a great threat for individuals with weakened immune system. The parasite also causes considerable economic losses due to infection of livestock. To date there is no efficient immunoprophylaxis for humans and animals, which would provide long-lasting protection against T. gondii invasion. Chimeric proteins, containing several selected fragments of parasite antigens important in the host cell invasion, offer a new approach to anti-Toxoplasma vaccine development. The aim of the study was to evaluate the immunogenic and protective activity of Toxoplasma gondii fusion proteins as potential immunoprophylactic tools.


  • Impact damage in SiO2 nanoparticle enhanced epoxy – Carbon fibre composites

    Low velocity impact behaviour of nano-SiO2 enhanced carbon fibre/epoxy composites for naval applications is reported. Epoxy resin matrix was enhanced by 1- 8 wt% SiO2 nanoparticles, based on industrial surface-modified nanosilica. Impact parameters: force, deformation, energy, damage size were recorded. The most pronounced effect was damage size decrease; e.g. ∼28% recorded by infrared thermography and X-ray computed radiography for 8% nano-SiO2 content. Crack branching and crack deflection, due to the nanoparticles, were observed. Decreases in permanent deformation, by ∼15%, and absorbed energy, by ∼8%, were observed, as well as improved fibre/matrix interfacial strength. Flexural strength peaked at 2–5% at ∼640 MPa and then decreased, probably due to nanoparticle agglomerations. There was very little effect of small nanoparticle contents on impact force, deformation and energy, with only a 6% increase of the peak impact force for 8% nano-SiO2 content.


  • IMPACT OF CAUSTICS ON ACOUSTICS OF WHISPERING GROTTOES IN THE OLIWA PARK IN GDAŃSK

    In the paper, caustics are discussed as ordered forms of focus broadening occurring in concave mirrors. An example of caustics created by the reflection of the light from the concave mirror is shown. Against this background, the possibility to observe caustics in rooms is pointed out. Special emphasis is put on large rooms of historic character, as such interiors frequently include acoustic mirrors in the form of arched vaults and concave walls. As a case study, the eighteenth-century Whispering Grottoes representing one of attractions of the Oliwa Park in Gdańsk was selected, where the phenomenon of forming a caustic was used intentionally to obtain the desired acoustic effect.

    The effects of population decline and their influence onto the national economy need to be analyzed with reference to modern demographic trends regarding society ageing process. The problem of demographic changes does not only concern the birth rate, life span and migration, but it also refers to economic phenomena and thus, the economic and demographic trend interrelation becomes quite obvious. Macroeconomic approach defines the relationship between the demographic and social and economic development of the country. This research gives a broad overview of the influence of the demographic changes onto the national economy. The purpose of the following paper is to present the impact of demographic changes onto Polish economy. The research period covers the years 2004-2015. The scope of the study includes the subject literature overview together with the collection of source materials presented in the empirial part of the study.


  • Impact of Galileo Observations on the Position and Ambiguities Estimation of GNSS Reference Stations

    Development of Galileo navigation system has caused that it is increasingly used in various areas. One of the most important of them is precise positioning of the reference networks. In this paper we present the impact of Galileo observations on the differential precise positioning as well as ambiguities resolution of selected GNSS stations. We tested five different solutions: GPS-only, Galileo-only, GPS/Galileo, GPS/GLONASS and GPS/GLONASS/Galileo. Calculations were performed using Bernese 5.2 software. Results indicate that the best positioning results are possible when the GPS and Galileo observations are used together, excluding GLONASS. We obtained standard deviation below 2 mm for North and East coordinates and below 6 mm in Up direction. Moreover, when GPS/Galileo observation were performed, we reached wide-lane and narrow-lane mean ambiguities resolution more than 90 % and 85 % for Galileo and 80 % and 75 % for GPS. Furthermore, we discussed impact of the IGS14 antenna calibrations on Galileo positioning results.

    The positive effects of the services of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) on the level of transport systems operation was confirmed by long-term studies conducted, inter alia, in the USA, Japan and Europe. Benefits resulting from the application of ITS services can be presented through performance indicators. The indicators represent in a numerical or qualitative manner to what extent ITS services can contribute to improving the safety of travellers and the quality of travel, upgrading the efficiency and reliability of the transport system, the efficiency of transport services providers, energy saving and environmental protection. The paper presents the impact of selected ITS services on the safety and efficiency of traffic, as well as indicators describing that impact. ITS services were specified according to the standard classification of services, prepared within the framework of the RID 4D research project “The impact of the use of Intelligent Transport Systems services on the road safety level,” funded by the National Centre for Research and Development and the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).

    This paper describes the project entitled: “Impact of the use of Intelligent Transport Systems on the level of road safety” (agreement no. DZP/RID-I-41/7/NCBR/2016), implemented as part of the Road Innovations Development (RID) programme, funded by the National Centre for Research and Development and the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA). The project is run by a consortium comprising the Motor Transport Institute, University of Gdańsk, Warsaw University of Technology, Military University of Technology and Research Institute of Roads and Bridges. The impact of ITS services and accompanying modules on road safety may be considered in functional, logical or physical terms. The aim of the project is to understand how ITS services change road safety.
